Bad Principles (3rd) Tatiyaadhammasutta
āMendicants, you should know bad principles and good principles. āAdhammo ca, bhikkhave, veditabbo dhammo ca; And you should know bad results and good results. anattho ca veditabbo attho ca. Knowing these things, your practice should follow the good principles with good results.ā AdhammaƱca viditvÄ dhammaƱca, anatthaƱca viditvÄ atthaƱca yathÄ dhammo yathÄ attho tathÄ paį¹ipajjitabbanāti.
That is what the Buddha said. Idamavoca bhagavÄ. When he had spoken, the Holy One got up from his seat and entered his dwelling. Idaį¹ vatvÄna sugato uį¹į¹hÄyÄsanÄ vihÄraį¹ pÄvisi.
Soon after the Buddha left, those mendicants considered, Atha kho tesaį¹ bhikkhÅ«naį¹ acirapakkantassa bhagavato etadahosi: āThe Buddha gave this brief summary recital, then entered his dwelling without explaining the meaning in detail. āidaį¹ kho no, Ävuso, bhagavÄ saį¹ khittena uddesaį¹ uddisitvÄ vitthÄrena atthaį¹ avibhajitvÄ uį¹į¹hÄyÄsanÄ vihÄraį¹ paviį¹į¹ho: āadhammo ca, bhikkhave, veditabbo dhammo ca; anattho ca veditabbo attho ca. When the greetings and polite conversation were over, they sat down to one side. They told him what had happened, and said, SammodanÄ«yaį¹ kathaį¹ sÄraį¹Ä«yaį¹ vÄ«tisÄretvÄ ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«diį¹su. āReverends, suppose there was a person in need of heartwood. And while wandering in search of heartwood heād come across a large tree standing with heartwood. But heād pass over the roots and trunk, imagining that the heartwood should be sought in the branches and leaves. āSeyyathÄpi, Ävuso, puriso sÄratthiko sÄragavesÄ« sÄrapariyesanaį¹ caramÄno mahato rukkhassa tiį¹į¹hato sÄravato atikkammeva mÅ«laį¹ atikkamma khandhaį¹ sÄkhÄpalÄse sÄraį¹ pariyesitabbaį¹ maƱƱeyya; Such is the consequence for the venerables. Though you were face to face with the Buddha, you overlooked him, imagining that you should ask me about this matter. evaį¹sampadamidaį¹ ÄyasmantÄnaį¹ satthari sammukhÄ«bhÅ«te taį¹ bhagavantaį¹ atisitvÄ amhe etamatthaį¹ paį¹ipucchitabbaį¹ maƱƱatha. For he is the Buddha, the one who knows and sees. He is vision, he is knowledge, he is the manifestation of principle, he is the manifestation of divinity. āCertainly he is the Buddha, the one who knows and sees. He is vision, he is knowledge, he is the manifestation of principle, he is the manifestation of divinity. He is the teacher, the proclaimer, the elucidator of meaning, the bestower of freedom from death, the lord of truth, the Realized One. āAddhÄvuso Änanda, bhagavÄ jÄnaį¹ jÄnÄti passaį¹ passati cakkhubhÅ«to ƱÄį¹abhÅ«to dhammabhÅ«to brahmabhÅ«to vattÄ pavattÄ atthassa ninnetÄ amatassa dÄtÄ dhammassÄmÄ« tathÄgato. āYes, reverend,ā they replied. āEvamÄvusoāti kho te bhikkhÅ« Äyasmato Änandassa paccassosuį¹. Änanda said this: AthÄyasmÄ Änando etadavoca:

Wrong view is a bad principle. MicchÄdiį¹į¹hi, Ävuso, adhammo; Right view is a good principle. sammÄdiį¹į¹hi dhammo; And the many bad, unskillful qualities produced by wrong view are bad results. ye ca micchÄdiį¹į¹hipaccayÄ aneke pÄpakÄ akusalÄ dhammÄ sambhavanti, ayaį¹ anattho; And the many skillful qualities fully developed because of right view are good results. sammÄdiį¹į¹hipaccayÄ ca aneke kusalÄ dhammÄ bhÄvanÄpÄripÅ«riį¹ gacchanti, ayaį¹ attho.
Wrong thought is a bad principle. Then they said: āEvamÄvusoāti kho te bhikkhÅ« Äyasmato Änandassa bhÄsitaį¹ abhinanditvÄ anumoditvÄ uį¹į¹hÄyÄsanÄ yena bhagavÄ tenupasaį¹ kamiį¹su; upasaį¹ kamitvÄ bhagavantaį¹ abhivÄdetvÄ ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«diį¹su. āGood, good, mendicants! āSÄdhu sÄdhu, bhikkhave. Änanda is astute, Paį¹įøito, bhikkhave, Änando. he has great wisdom. MahÄpaƱƱo, bhikkhave, Änando. If you came to me and asked this question, I would answer it in exactly the same way as Änanda.
