Decline ParihÄnasutta
There SÄriputta addressed the mendicants: Tatra kho ÄyasmÄ sÄriputto bhikkhÅ« Ämantesi: āReverends, mendicants!ā āÄvuso bhikkhaveāti.
āReverend,ā they replied. āÄvusoāti kho te bhikkhÅ« Äyasmato sÄriputtassa paccassosuį¹. SÄriputta said this: ÄyasmÄ sÄriputto etadavoca:
āReverends, they speak of an individual liable to decline, āāParihÄnadhammo puggalo, parihÄnadhammo puggaloāti, Ävuso, vuccati. and one not liable to decline. āAparihÄnadhammo puggalo, aparihÄnadhammo puggaloāti, Ävuso, vuccati. But how did the Buddha define an individual liable to decline, and one not liable to decline?ā KittÄvatÄ nu kho, Ävuso, parihÄnadhammo puggalo vutto bhagavatÄ, kittÄvatÄ ca pana aparihÄnadhammo puggalo vutto bhagavatÄāti?
āReverend, we would travel a long way to learn the meaning of this statement in the presence of Venerable SÄriputta. āDÅ«ratopi kho mayaį¹, Ävuso, ÄgacchÄma Äyasmato sÄriputtassa santike etassa bhÄsitassa atthamaƱƱÄtuį¹. May Venerable SÄriputta himself please clarify the meaning of this. SÄdhu vatÄyasmantaį¹yeva sÄriputtaį¹ paį¹ibhÄtu etassa bhÄsitassa attho. The mendicants will listen and remember it.ā Äyasmato sÄriputtassa sutvÄ bhikkhÅ« dhÄressantÄ«āti.
āThen listen and apply your mind well, I will speak.ā āTenahÄvuso, suį¹Ätha, sÄdhukaį¹ manasi karotha, bhÄsissÄmÄ«āti.
āYes, reverend,ā they replied. āEvamÄvusoāti kho te bhikkhÅ« Äyasmato sÄriputtassa paccassosuį¹. SÄriputta said this: ÄyasmÄ sÄriputto etadavoca:
āHow did the Buddha define an individual liable to decline? āKittÄvatÄ nu kho, Ävuso, parihÄnadhammo puggalo vutto bhagavatÄ? Itās when a mendicant doesnāt get to hear a teaching they havenāt heard before. They forget those teachings they have heard. They donāt keep exercising the teachings with which they are already familiar. And they donāt come to understand what they havenāt understood before. IdhÄvuso, bhikkhu assutaƱceva dhammaį¹ na suį¹Äti, sutÄ cassa dhammÄ sammosaį¹ gacchanti, ye cassa dhammÄ pubbe cetaso asamphuį¹į¹hapubbÄ te cassa na samudÄcaranti, aviƱƱÄtaƱceva na vijÄnÄti. Thatās how the Buddha defined an individual liable to decline. EttÄvatÄ kho, Ävuso, parihÄnadhammo puggalo vutto bhagavatÄ.
And how did the Buddha define an individual not liable to decline? KittÄvatÄ ca panÄvuso, aparihÄnadhammo puggalo vutto bhagavatÄ? Itās when a mendicant gets to hear a teaching they havenāt heard before. They remember those teachings they have heard. They keep exercising the teachings with which they are already familiar. And they come to understand what they havenāt understood before. IdhÄvuso, bhikkhu assutaƱceva dhammaį¹ suį¹Äti, sutÄ cassa dhammÄ na sammosaį¹ gacchanti, ye cassa dhammÄ pubbe cetaso asamphuį¹į¹hapubbÄ te cassa samudÄcaranti, aviƱƱÄtaƱceva vijÄnÄti. Thatās how the Buddha defined an individual not liable to decline. EttÄvatÄ kho, Ävuso, aparihÄnadhammo puggalo vutto bhagavatÄ.
If a mendicant isnāt skilled in encompassing anotherās mind, then they should train themselves: āI will be skilled in encompassing my own mind.ā No ce, Ävuso, bhikkhu paracittapariyÄyakusalo hoti, atha āsacittapariyÄyakusalo bhavissÄmÄ«ātiāevaƱhi vo, Ävuso, sikkhitabbaį¹.
And how is a mendicant skilled in encompassing their own mind? KathaƱcÄvuso, bhikkhu sacittapariyÄyakusalo hoti? Suppose there was a woman or man who was young, youthful, and fond of adornments, and they check their own reflection in a clean bright mirror or a clear bowl of water. If they see any dirt or blemish there, theyād try to remove it. SeyyathÄpi, Ävuso, itthÄ« vÄ puriso vÄ daharo yuvÄ maį¹įøanakajÄtiko ÄdÄse vÄ parisuddhe pariyodÄte acche vÄ udapatte sakaį¹ mukhanimittaį¹ paccavekkhamÄno sace tattha passati rajaį¹ vÄ aį¹ gaį¹aį¹ vÄ, tasseva rajassa vÄ aį¹ gaį¹assa vÄ pahÄnÄya vÄyamati. But if they donāt see any dirt or blemish there, theyāre happy with that, as theyāve got all they wished for: No ce tattha passati rajaį¹ vÄ aį¹ gaį¹aį¹ vÄ, tenevattamano hoti paripuį¹į¹asaį¹ kappo: āHow fortunate that Iām clean!ā ālÄbhÄ vata me, parisuddhaį¹ vata meāti.
In the same way, checking is very helpful for a mendicantās skillful qualities. Evameva kho, Ävuso, bhikkhuno paccavekkhaį¹Ä bahukÄrÄ hoti kusalesu dhammesu: āIs contentment often found in me or not? Is kind-heartedness often found in me or not? Is freedom from dullness and drowsiness often found in me or not? Is calm often found in me or not? Is confidence often found in me or not? Is love often found in me or not? Is purity of mind often found in me or not? Is internal joy with the teaching found in me or not? Is internal serenity of heart found in me or not? Is the higher wisdom of discernment of principles found in me or not?ā āanabhijjhÄlu nu kho bahulaį¹ viharÄmi, saį¹vijjati nu kho me eso dhammo udÄhu no, abyÄpannacitto nu kho bahulaį¹ viharÄmi, saį¹vijjati nu kho me eso dhammo udÄhu no, vigatathinamiddho nu kho bahulaį¹ viharÄmi, saį¹vijjati nu kho me eso dhammo udÄhu no, anuddhato nu kho bahulaį¹ viharÄmi, saį¹vijjati nu kho me eso dhammo udÄhu no, tiį¹į¹avicikiccho nu kho bahulaį¹ viharÄmi, saį¹vijjati nu kho me eso dhammo udÄhu no, akkodhano nu kho bahulaį¹ viharÄmi, saį¹vijjati nu kho me eso dhammo udÄhu no, asaį¹ kiliį¹į¹hacitto nu kho bahulaį¹ viharÄmi, saį¹vijjati nu kho me eso dhammo udÄhu no, lÄbhÄ« nu khomhi ajjhattaį¹ dhammapÄmojjassa, saį¹vijjati nu kho me eso dhammo udÄhu no, lÄbhÄ« nu khomhi ajjhattaį¹ cetosamathassa, saį¹vijjati nu kho me eso dhammo udÄhu no, lÄbhÄ« nu khomhi adhipaƱƱÄdhammavipassanÄya, saį¹vijjati nu kho me eso dhammo udÄhu noāti.
Suppose a mendicant, while checking, doesnāt see any of these skillful qualities in themselves. In order to get them they should apply extraordinary enthusiasm, effort, zeal, vigor, perseverance, mindfulness, and situational awareness. Sace pana, Ävuso, bhikkhu paccavekkhamÄno sabbepime kusale dhamme attani na samanupassati, tenÄvuso, bhikkhunÄ sabbesaį¹yeva imesaį¹ kusalÄnaį¹ dhammÄnaį¹ paį¹ilÄbhÄya adhimatto chando ca vÄyÄmo ca ussÄho ca ussoįø·hÄ« ca appaį¹ivÄnÄ« ca sati ca sampajaƱƱaƱca karaį¹Ä«yaį¹. Suppose your clothes or head were on fire. In order to extinguish it, youād apply extraordinary enthusiasm, effort, zeal, vigor, perseverance, mindfulness, and situational awareness. SeyyathÄpi, Ävuso, Ädittacelo vÄ ÄdittasÄ«so vÄ. Tasseva celassa vÄ sÄ«sassa vÄ nibbÄpanÄya adhimattaį¹ chandaƱca vÄyÄmaƱca ussÄhaƱca ussoįø·hiƱca appaį¹ivÄniƱca satiƱca sampajaƱƱaƱca kareyya. In the same way, they should apply extraordinary enthusiasm to get those skillful qualities ⦠Evamevaį¹ kho, Ävuso, tena bhikkhunÄ sabbesaį¹yeva kusalÄnaį¹ dhammÄnaį¹ paį¹ilÄbhÄya adhimatto chando ca vÄyÄmo ca ussÄho ca ussoįø·hÄ« ca appaį¹ivÄnÄ« ca sati ca sampajaƱƱaƱca karaį¹Ä«yaį¹.
Suppose a mendicant, while checking, sees some of these skillful qualities in themselves, but doesnāt see others. Grounded on the skillful qualities they see, they should apply extraordinary enthusiasm, effort, zeal, vigor, perseverance, mindfulness, and situational awareness in order to get the skillful qualities they donāt see. But suppose a mendicant, while checking, sees all of these skillful qualities in themselves. Grounded on all these skillful qualities they should practice meditation further to end the defilements.ā Sace panÄvuso, bhikkhu paccavekkhamÄno sabbepime kusale dhamme attani samanupassati, tenÄvuso, bhikkhunÄ sabbesveva imesu kusalesu dhammesu patiį¹į¹hÄya uttari ÄsavÄnaį¹ khayÄya yogo karaį¹Ä«yoāti.
