A Boaster Katthīsutta
At one time Venerable MahÄcunda was staying in the land of the CetÄ«s at SahajÄti. Ekaį¹ samayaį¹ ÄyasmÄ mahÄcundo cetÄ«su viharati sahajÄtiyaį¹. There he addressed the mendicants: Tatra kho ÄyasmÄ mahÄcundo bhikkhÅ« Ämantesi: āReverends, mendicants!ā āÄvuso bhikkhaveāti.
āReverend,ā they replied. āÄvusoāti kho te bhikkhÅ« Äyasmato mahÄcundassa paccassosuį¹. Venerable MahÄcunda said this: ÄyasmÄ mahÄcundo etadavoca:
āTake a mendicant who boasts and brags about their achievements: āIdhÄvuso, bhikkhu katthÄ« hoti vikatthÄ« adhigamesu: āI enter and emerge from the first absorption, the second absorption, the third absorption, and the fourth absorption. And I enter and emerge from the dimensions of infinite space, infinite consciousness, nothingness, and neither perception nor non-perception. Theyāre pursued, pressed, and grilled by the Realized One, or by one of his disciples who has the absorptions, and is skilled in attainments, in the minds of others, and in encompassing anotherās mind. Tamenaį¹ tathÄgato vÄ tathÄgatasÄvako vÄ jhÄyÄ« samÄpattikusalo paracittakusalo paracittapariyÄyakusalo samanuyuƱjati samanuggÄhati samanubhÄsati. Grilled in this way they get stuck or lose their way. They fall to ruin and disaster. So tathÄgatena vÄ tathÄgatasÄvakena vÄ jhÄyinÄ samÄpattikusalena paracittakusalena paracittapariyÄyakusalena samanuyuƱjiyamÄno samanuggÄhiyamÄno samanubhÄsiyamÄno irÄ«į¹aį¹ Äpajjati vicinaį¹ Äpajjati anayaį¹ Äpajjati byasanaį¹ Äpajjati anayabyasanaį¹ Äpajjati.
The Realized One or one of his disciples encompasses their mind and investigates: Tamenaį¹ tathÄgato vÄ tathÄgatasÄvako vÄ jhÄyÄ« samÄpattikusalo paracittakusalo paracittapariyÄyakusalo evaį¹ cetasÄ ceto paricca manasi karoti: āWhy does this venerable boast and brag about their achievements, saying, ākiį¹ nu kho ayamÄyasmÄ katthÄ« hoti vikatthÄ« adhigamesuāāI enter and emerge from the first absorption ⦠ahaį¹ paį¹hamaį¹ jhÄnaį¹ samÄpajjÄmipi vuį¹į¹hahÄmipi ā¦pe⦠and the cessation of perception and feeling.āā ahaį¹ saƱƱÄvedayitanirodhaį¹ samÄpajjÄmipi vuį¹į¹hahÄmipÄ«āti.
They understand, Tamenaį¹ tathÄgato vÄ tathÄgatasÄvako vÄ jhÄyÄ« samÄpattikusalo paracittakusalo paracittapariyÄyakusalo evaį¹ cetasÄ ceto paricca pajÄnÄti: āFor a long time this venerableās deeds have been broken, tainted, spotty, and marred. Their deeds and behavior are inconsistent. āDÄ«gharattaį¹ kho ayamÄyasmÄ khaį¹įøakÄrÄ« chiddakÄrÄ« sabalakÄrÄ« kammÄsakÄrÄ« na santatakÄrÄ« na santatavutti sÄ«lesu. This venerable is unethical, DussÄ«lo kho ayamÄyasmÄ. and unethical conduct means decline in the teaching and training proclaimed by the Realized One. Dussilyaį¹ kho pana tathÄgatappavedite dhammavinaye parihÄnametaį¹.
This venerable is unfaithful, Assaddho kho pana ayamÄyasmÄ; and lack of faith means decline ⦠assaddhiyaį¹ kho pana tathÄgatappavedite dhammavinaye parihÄnametaį¹.
This venerable is unlearned and unpracticed, Appassuto kho pana ayamÄyasmÄ anÄcÄro; and lack of learning means decline ⦠appasaccaį¹ kho pana tathÄgatappavedite dhammavinaye parihÄnametaį¹.
This venerable is hard to admonish, Dubbaco kho pana ayamÄyasmÄ; and being hard to admonish means decline ⦠dovacassatÄ kho pana tathÄgatappavedite dhammavinaye parihÄnametaį¹.
This venerable has bad friends, PÄpamitto kho pana ayamÄyasmÄ; and bad friends mean decline ⦠pÄpamittatÄ kho pana tathÄgatappavedite dhammavinaye parihÄnametaį¹.
This venerable is lazy, KusÄ«to kho pana ayamÄyasmÄ; and laziness means decline ⦠kosajjaį¹ kho pana tathÄgatappavedite dhammavinaye parihÄnametaį¹.
This venerable is unmindful, Muį¹į¹hassati kho pana ayamÄyasmÄ; and unmindfulness means decline ⦠muį¹į¹hassaccaį¹ kho pana tathÄgatappavedite dhammavinaye parihÄnametaį¹.
This venerable is deceptive, Kuhako kho pana ayamÄyasmÄ; and deceitfulness means decline ⦠kohaƱƱaį¹ kho pana tathÄgatappavedite dhammavinaye parihÄnametaį¹.
This venerable is burdensome, Dubbharo kho pana ayamÄyasmÄ; and being burdensome means decline ⦠dubbharatÄ kho pana tathÄgatappavedite dhammavinaye parihÄnametaį¹.
This venerable is witless, DuppaƱƱo kho pana ayamÄyasmÄ; and lack of wisdom means decline in the teaching and training proclaimed by the Realized One.ā duppaƱƱatÄ kho pana tathÄgatappavedite dhammavinaye parihÄnametaį¹ā.
Suppose one friend was to say to another: SeyyathÄpi, Ävuso, sahÄyako sahÄyakaį¹ evaį¹ vadeyya: āMy dear, when you need money for some payment, just ask me and Iāll give it.ā āyadÄ te, samma, dhanena dhanakaraį¹Ä«yaį¹ assa, yÄceyyÄsi maį¹ dhanaį¹. DassÄmi te dhananāti. Then when some payment falls due, that friend says to their friend: āI need some money, my dear. Give me some.ā So kiƱcideva dhanakaraį¹Ä«ye samuppanne sahÄyako sahÄyakaį¹ evaį¹ vadeyya: āattho me, samma, dhanena. Dehi me dhananāti. Theyād say: So evaį¹ vadeyya: āWell then, my dear, dig here.ā So they dig there, but donāt find anything. ātena hi, samma, idha khanÄhÄ«āti. So tatra khananto nÄdhigaccheyya. Theyād say: So evaį¹ vadeyya: āYou lied to me, my dear, you spoke hollow words when you told me to dig here.ā āalikaį¹ maį¹, samma, avaca; tucchakaį¹ maį¹, samma, avacaāidha khanÄhÄ«āti. Theyād say: So evaį¹ vadeyya: āMy dear, I didnāt lie or speak hollow words. Well then, dig here.ā ānÄhaį¹ taį¹, samma, alikaį¹ avacaį¹, tucchakaį¹ avacaį¹. Tena hi, samma, idha khanÄhÄ«āti. So they dig there as well, but donāt find anything. So tatrapi khananto nÄdhigaccheyya. Theyād say: So evaį¹ vadeyya: āYou lied to me, my dear, you spoke hollow words when you said dig here.ā āalikaį¹ maį¹, samma, avaca, tucchakaį¹ maį¹, samma, avacaāidha khanÄhÄ«āti. Theyād say: So evaį¹ vadeyya: āMy dear, I didnāt lie or speak hollow words. Well then, dig here.ā ānÄhaį¹ taį¹, samma, alikaį¹ avacaį¹, tucchakaį¹ avacaį¹. Tena hi, samma, idha khanÄhÄ«āti. So they dig there as well, but donāt find anything. So tatrapi khananto nÄdhigaccheyya. Theyād say: So evaį¹ vadeyya: āYou lied to me, my dear, you spoke hollow words when you said dig here.ā āalikaį¹ maį¹, samma, avaca, tucchakaį¹ maį¹, samma, avacaāidha khanÄhÄ«āti. Theyād say: So evaį¹ vadeyya: āMy dear, I didnāt lie or speak hollow words. But I had gone mad, I was out of my mind.ā ānÄhaį¹ taį¹, samma, alikaį¹ avacaį¹, tucchakaį¹ avacaį¹. Api ca ahameva ummÄdaį¹ pÄpuį¹iį¹ cetaso vipariyÄyanāti.
In the same way, take a mendicant who boasts and brags about their achievements: Evamevaį¹ kho, Ävuso, bhikkhu katthÄ« hoti vikatthÄ« adhigamesu: āI enter and emerge from the first absorption ⦠and the cessation of perception and feeling.ā āahaį¹ paį¹hamaį¹ jhÄnaį¹ samÄpajjÄmipi vuį¹į¹hahÄmipi, ahaį¹ dutiyaį¹ jhÄnaį¹ samÄpajjÄmipi vuį¹į¹hahÄmipi, ahaį¹ tatiyaį¹ jhÄnaį¹ samÄpajjÄmipi vuį¹į¹hahÄmipi, ahaį¹ catutthaį¹ jhÄnaį¹ samÄpajjÄmipi vuį¹į¹hahÄmipi, ahaį¹ ÄkÄsÄnaƱcÄyatanaį¹ samÄpajjÄmipi vuį¹į¹hahÄmipi, ahaį¹ viƱƱÄį¹aƱcÄyatanaį¹ samÄpajjÄmipi vuį¹į¹hahÄmipi, ahaį¹ ÄkiƱcaƱƱÄyatanaį¹ samÄpajjÄmipi vuį¹į¹hahÄmipi, ahaį¹ nevasaƱƱÄnÄsaƱƱÄyatanaį¹ samÄpajjÄmipi vuį¹į¹hahÄmipi, ahaį¹ saƱƱÄvedayitanirodhaį¹ samÄpajjÄmipi vuį¹į¹hahÄmipÄ«āti.

deceptive ⦠Kuhako kho pana ayamÄyasmÄ; kohaƱƱaį¹ kho pana tathÄgatappavedite dhammavinaye parihÄnametaį¹.
burdensome ⦠Dubbharo kho pana ayamÄyasmÄ; dubbharatÄ kho pana tathÄgatappavedite dhammavinaye parihÄnametaį¹.
This venerable is witless, DuppaƱƱo kho pana ayamÄyasmÄ; and lack of wisdom means decline in the teaching and training proclaimed by the Realized One.ā duppaƱƱatÄ kho pana tathÄgatappavedite dhammavinaye parihÄnametaį¹ā.
It is quite impossible for a mendicant to achieve growth, improvement, or maturity in this teaching and training without giving up these ten qualities. So vatÄvuso, bhikkhu āime dasa dhamme appahÄya imasmiį¹ dhammavinaye vuddhiį¹ virūḷhiį¹ vepullaį¹ ÄpajjissatÄ«āti netaį¹ į¹hÄnaį¹ vijjati. It is quite possible for a mendicant to achieve growth, improvement, or maturity in this teaching and training after giving up these ten qualities.ā So vatÄvuso, bhikkhu āime dasa dhamme pahÄya imasmiį¹ dhammavinaye vuddhiį¹ virūḷhiį¹ vepullaį¹ ÄpajjissatÄ«āti į¹hÄnametaį¹ vijjatÄ«āti.
