At one time the Buddha was staying near CampÄ on the banks of the GaggarÄ Lotus Pond. Ekaį¹ samayaį¹ bhagavÄ campÄyaį¹ viharati gaggarÄya pokkharaį¹iyÄ tÄ«re.
Then the householder VajjiyamÄhita left SÄvatthÄ« in the middle of the day to see the Buddha. Atha kho vajjiyamÄhito gahapati divÄ divassa campÄya nikkhami bhagavantaį¹ dassanÄya. Then it occurred to him, Atha kho vajjiyamÄhitassa gahapatissa etadahosi: āItās the wrong time to see the Buddha, āakÄlo kho tÄva bhagavantaį¹ dassanÄya. as heās in retreat. Paį¹isallÄ«no bhagavÄ. And itās the wrong time to see the esteemed mendicants, ManobhÄvanÄ«yÄnampi bhikkhÅ«naį¹ akÄlo dassanÄya. as theyāre in retreat. Paį¹isallÄ«nÄ manobhÄvanÄ«yÄpi bhikkhÅ«. Why donāt I visit the monastery of the wanderers of other religions?ā YannÅ«nÄhaį¹ yena aƱƱatitthiyÄnaį¹ paribbÄjakÄnaį¹ ÄrÄmo tenupasaį¹ kameyyanāti.
Then he went to the monastery of the wanderers of other religions. Atha kho vajjiyamÄhito gahapati yena aƱƱatitthiyÄnaį¹ paribbÄjakÄnaį¹ ÄrÄmo tenupasaį¹ kami. Now at that time, the wanderers of other religions had come together, making an uproar, a colossal racket as they sat and talked about all kinds of low topics. They saw VajjiyamÄhita coming off in the distance, and stopped each other, saying, Addasaį¹su kho te aƱƱatitthiyÄ paribbÄjakÄ vajjiyamÄhitaį¹ gahapatiį¹ dÅ«ratova Ägacchantaį¹. DisvÄna aƱƱamaƱƱaį¹ saį¹į¹hÄpesuį¹: āBe quiet, good fellows, donāt make a sound. āappasaddÄ bhonto hontu. MÄ bhonto saddamakattha. The householder VajjiyamÄhita, a disciple of the ascetic Gotama, is coming into our monastery. Ayaį¹ vajjiyamÄhito gahapati Ägacchati samaį¹assa gotamassa sÄvako. He is included among the white-clothed lay disciples of the ascetic Gotama, who is residing near CampÄ. YÄvatÄ kho pana samaį¹assa gotamassa sÄvakÄ gihÄ« odÄtavasanÄ campÄyaį¹ paį¹ivasanti, ayaį¹ tesaį¹ aƱƱataro vajjiyamÄhito gahapati. Such venerables like the quiet, are educated to be quiet, and praise the quiet. AppasaddakÄmÄ kho pana te Äyasmanto appasaddavinÄ«tÄ appasaddassa vaį¹į¹avÄdino. Hopefully if he sees that our assembly is quiet heāll see fit to approach.ā Appeva nÄma appasaddaį¹ parisaį¹ viditvÄ upasaį¹ kamitabbaį¹ maƱƱeyyÄāti.
Then those wanderers of other religions fell silent. Atha kho te aƱƱatitthiyÄ paribbÄjakÄ tuį¹hÄ« ahesuį¹. Then VajjiyamÄhita went up to them, and exchanged greetings with the wanderers there. Atha kho vajjiyamÄhito gahapati yena te aƱƱatitthiyÄ paribbÄjakÄ tenupasaį¹ kami; upasaį¹ kamitvÄ tehi aƱƱatitthiyehi paribbÄjakehi saddhiį¹ sammodi. When the greetings and polite conversation were over, he sat down to one side. The wanderers said to him: SammodanÄ«yaį¹ kathaį¹ sÄraį¹Ä«yaį¹ vÄ«tisÄretvÄ ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaį¹ nisinnaį¹ kho vajjiyamÄhitaį¹ gahapatiį¹ te aƱƱatitthiyÄ paribbÄjakÄ etadavocuį¹:
āIs it really true, householder? Does the ascetic Gotama criticize all forms of mortification? Does he categorically condemn and denounce those fervent mortifiers who live rough?ā āsaccaį¹ kira, gahapati, samaį¹o gotamo sabbaį¹ tapaį¹ garahati, sabbaį¹ tapassiį¹ lÅ«khÄjÄ«viį¹ ekaį¹sena upakkosati upavadatÄ«āti?
āNo, sirs, the Buddha does not criticize all forms of mortification. Nor does he categorically condemn and denounce those fervent mortifiers who live rough. āNa kho, bhante, bhagavÄ sabbaį¹ tapaį¹ garahati napi sabbaį¹ tapassiį¹ lÅ«khÄjÄ«viį¹ ekaį¹sena upakkosati upavadati. The Buddha criticizes where it is due, and praises where it is due. GÄrayhaį¹ kho, bhante, bhagavÄ garahati, pasaį¹sitabbaį¹ pasaį¹sati. In doing so he is one who speaks after analyzing the question, GÄrayhaį¹ kho pana, bhante, bhagavÄ garahanto pasaį¹sitabbaį¹ pasaį¹santo vibhajjavÄdo bhagavÄ. and is not one-sided on this point.ā Na so bhagavÄ ettha ekaį¹savÄdoāti.
When he said this, one of the wanderers said to him, Evaį¹ vutte, aƱƱataro paribbÄjako vajjiyamÄhitaį¹ gahapatiį¹ etadavoca: āHold on, householder! That ascetic Gotama who you praise is an exterminator who refrains from making statements.ā āÄgamehi tvaį¹, gahapati, yassa tvaį¹ samaį¹assa gotamassa vaį¹į¹aį¹ bhÄsati, samaį¹o gotamo venayiko appaƱƱattikoāti?
āOn this point, also, I reasonably respond to the venerables. āEtthapÄhaį¹, bhante, Äyasmante vakkhÄmi sahadhammena: The Buddha has stated āThis is skillfulā and āidaį¹ kusalanāti, bhante, bhagavatÄ paƱƱattaį¹; āThis is unskillfulā. āidaį¹ akusalanāti, bhante, bhagavatÄ paƱƱattaį¹. So when it comes to what is skillful and unskillful the Buddha makes a statement. Iti kusalÄkusalaį¹ bhagavÄ paƱƱÄpayamÄno sapaƱƱattiko bhagavÄ; He is not an exterminator who refrains from making statements.ā na so bhagavÄ venayiko appaƱƱattikoāti.
When this was said, those wanderers sat silent, dismayed, shoulders drooping, downcast, depressed, with nothing to say. Evaį¹ vutte te paribbÄjakÄ tuį¹hÄ«bhÅ«tÄ maį¹ kubhÅ«tÄ pattakkhandhÄ adhomukhÄ pajjhÄyantÄ appaį¹ibhÄnÄ nisÄ«diį¹su. Seeing this, VajjiyamÄhita rose from his seat. He went to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, Atha kho vajjiyamÄhito gahapati te paribbÄjake tuį¹hÄ«bhÅ«te maį¹ kubhÅ«te pattakkhandhe adhomukhe pajjhÄyante appaį¹ibhÄne viditvÄ uį¹į¹hÄyÄsanÄ yena bhagavÄ tenupasaį¹ kami; upasaį¹ kamitvÄ bhagavantaį¹ abhivÄdetvÄ ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. and informed the Buddha of all they had discussed. Ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho vajjiyamÄhito gahapati yÄvatako ahosi tehi aƱƱatitthiyehi paribbÄjakehi saddhiį¹ kathÄsallÄpo taį¹ sabbaį¹ bhagavato Ärocesi.
āGood, good, householder! āSÄdhu sÄdhu, gahapati. Thatās how you should legitimately and completely refute those futile men from time to time. Evaį¹ kho te, gahapati, moghapurisÄ kÄlena kÄlaį¹ sahadhammena suniggahitaį¹ niggahetabbÄ. Householder, I donāt say that all mortifications should be undergone. NÄhaį¹, gahapati, sabbaį¹ tapaį¹ tapitabbanti vadÄmi; But I donāt say that no mortifications should be undergone. na ca panÄhaį¹, gahapati, sabbaį¹ tapaį¹ na tapitabbanti vadÄmi; I donāt say that all observances should be undertaken. nÄhaį¹, gahapati, sabbaį¹ samÄdÄnaį¹ samÄditabbanti vadÄmi; But I donāt say that no observances should be undertaken. na panÄhaį¹, gahapati, sabbaį¹ samÄdÄnaį¹ na samÄditabbanti vadÄmi; I donāt say that all efforts should be tried. nÄhaį¹, gahapati, sabbaį¹ padhÄnaį¹ padahitabbanti vadÄmi; But I donāt say that no efforts should be tried. na panÄhaį¹, gahapati, sabbaį¹ padhÄnaį¹ na padahitabbanti vadÄmi; I donāt say that everything should be given up. nÄhaį¹, gahapati, sabbo paį¹inissaggo paį¹inissajjitabboti vadÄmi. But I donāt say that nothing should be given up. Na panÄhaį¹, gahapati, sabbo paį¹inissaggo na paį¹inissajjitabboti vadÄmi; I donāt say that you should be liberated with all kinds of freedom. nÄhaį¹, gahapati, sabbÄ vimutti vimuccitabbÄti vadÄmi; But I donāt say that you should not be liberated with any kind of freedom. na panÄhaį¹, gahapati, sabbÄ vimutti na vimuccitabbÄti vadÄmi.
When undergoing certain mortifications, unskillful qualities grow while skillful qualities decline. I say that you shouldnāt undergo those mortifications. YaƱhi, gahapati, tapaį¹ tapato akusalÄ dhammÄ abhivaįøįøhanti, kusalÄ dhammÄ parihÄyanti, evarÅ«paį¹ tapaį¹ na tapitabbanti vadÄmi. When undergoing certain mortifications, unskillful qualities decline while skillful qualities grow. I say that you should undergo those mortifications. YaƱca khvassa, gahapati, tapaį¹ tapato akusalÄ dhammÄ parihÄyanti, kusalÄ dhammÄ abhivaįøįøhanti, evarÅ«paį¹ tapaį¹ tapitabbanti vadÄmi.
When undertaking certain observances, unskillful qualities grow while skillful qualities decline. I say that you shouldnāt undertake those observances. YaƱhi, gahapati, samÄdÄnaį¹ samÄdiyato akusalÄ dhammÄ abhivaįøįøhanti, kusalÄ dhammÄ parihÄyanti, evarÅ«paį¹ samÄdÄnaį¹ na samÄditabbanti vadÄmi. When undertaking certain observances, unskillful qualities decline while skillful qualities grow. I say that you should undertake those observances. YaƱca khvassa, gahapati, samÄdÄnaį¹ samÄdiyato akusalÄ dhammÄ parihÄyanti, kusalÄ dhammÄ abhivaįøįøhanti, evarÅ«paį¹ samÄdÄnaį¹ samÄditabbanti vadÄmi.
When trying certain efforts, unskillful qualities grow while skillful qualities decline. I say that you shouldnāt try those efforts. YaƱhi, gahapati, padhÄnaį¹ padahato akusalÄ dhammÄ abhivaįøįøhanti, kusalÄ dhammÄ parihÄyanti, evarÅ«paį¹ padhÄnaį¹ na padahitabbanti vadÄmi. When trying certain efforts, unskillful qualities decline while skillful qualities grow. I say that you should try those efforts. YaƱca khvassa, gahapati, padhÄnaį¹ padahato akusalÄ dhammÄ parihÄyanti kusalÄ dhammÄ abhivaįøįøhanti, evarÅ«paį¹ padhÄnaį¹ padahitabbanti vadÄmi.
When giving up certain things, unskillful qualities grow while skillful qualities decline. I say that you shouldnāt give up those things. YaƱhi, gahapati, paį¹inissaggaį¹ paį¹inissajjato akusalÄ dhammÄ abhivaįøįøhanti, kusalÄ dhammÄ parihÄyanti, evarÅ«po paį¹inissaggo na paį¹inissajjitabboti vadÄmi. When giving up certain things, unskillful qualities decline while skillful qualities grow. I say that you should give up those things. YaƱca khvassa, gahapati, paį¹inissaggaį¹ paį¹inissajjato akusalÄ dhammÄ parihÄyanti, kusalÄ dhammÄ abhivaįøįøhanti, evarÅ«po paį¹inissaggo paį¹inissajjitabboti vadÄmi.
When being liberated with certain kinds of freedom, unskillful qualities grow while skillful qualities decline. I say that you shouldnāt be liberated with those kinds of freedom. YaƱhi, gahapati, vimuttiį¹ vimuccato akusalÄ dhammÄ abhivaįøįøhanti, kusalÄ dhammÄ parihÄyanti, evarÅ«pÄ vimutti na vimuccitabbÄti vadÄmi. When being liberated with certain kinds of freedom, unskillful qualities decline while skillful qualities grow. I say that you should be liberated with those kinds of freedom.ā YaƱca khvassa, gahapati, vimuttiį¹ vimuccato akusalÄ dhammÄ parihÄyanti, kusalÄ dhammÄ abhivaįøįøhanti, evarÅ«pÄ vimutti vimuccitabbÄti vadÄmÄ«āti.
After VajjiyamÄhita had been educated, encouraged, fired up, and inspired with a Dhamma talk by the Buddha, he rose from his seat, bowed, and respectfully circled the Buddha before leaving. Atha kho vajjiyamÄhito gahapati bhagavatÄ dhammiyÄ kathÄya sandassito samÄdapito samuttejito sampahaį¹sito uį¹į¹hÄyÄsanÄ bhagavantaį¹ abhivÄdetvÄ padakkhiį¹aį¹ katvÄ pakkÄmi.
Then, not long after VajjiyamÄhita had left, the Buddha addressed the mendicants: Atha kho bhagavÄ acirapakkante vajjiyamÄhite gahapatimhi bhikkhÅ« Ämantesi: āMendicants, even a mendicant who for a long time has had little dust in their eye in this teaching and training would legitimately and completely refute those wanderers of other religions just as the householder VajjiyamÄhita did.ā āyopi so, bhikkhave, bhikkhu dÄ«gharattaį¹ apparajakkho imasmiį¹ dhammavinaye, sopi evamevaį¹ aƱƱatitthiye paribbÄjake sahadhammena suniggahitaį¹ niggaį¹heyya yathÄ taį¹ vajjiyamÄhitena gahapatinÄ niggahitÄāti.
