With Nandiya Nandiyasutta
At one time the Buddha was staying in the land of the Sakyans, near Kapilavatthu in the Banyan Tree Monastery. Ekaį¹ samayaį¹ bhagavÄ sakkesu viharati kapilavatthusmiį¹ nigrodhÄrÄme.
Now at that time the Buddha wanted to commence the rains residence at SÄvatthÄ«. Tena kho pana samayena bhagavÄ sÄvatthiyaį¹ vassÄvÄsaį¹ upagantukÄmo hoti.
Nandiya the Sakyan heard about this, Assosi kho nandiyo sakko: ābhagavÄ kira sÄvatthiyaį¹ vassÄvÄsaį¹ upagantukÄmoāti. and thought, Atha kho nandiyassa sakkassa etadahosi: āWhy donāt I also commence the rains residence at SÄvatthÄ«. āyannÅ«nÄhampi sÄvatthiyaį¹ vassÄvÄsaį¹ upagaccheyyaį¹. There I can focus on my work and from time to time get to see the Buddha.ā Tattha kammantaƱceva adhiį¹į¹hahissÄmi, bhagavantaƱca lacchÄmi kÄlena kÄlaį¹ dassanÄyÄāti.
So the Buddha commenced the rains residence in SÄvatthÄ«, Atha kho bhagavÄ sÄvatthiyaį¹ vassÄvÄsaį¹ upagacchi. and so did Nandiya. Nandiyopi kho sakko sÄvatthiyaį¹ vassÄvÄsaį¹ upagacchi. There he focused on his work and from time to time got to see the Buddha. Tattha kammantaƱceva adhiį¹į¹hÄsi, bhagavantaƱca labhi kÄlena kÄlaį¹ dassanÄya.
At that time several mendicants were making a robe for the Buddha, thinking that Tena kho pana samayena sambahulÄ bhikkhÅ« bhagavato cÄ«varakammaį¹ karonti: when his robe was finished and the three months of the rains residence had passed the Buddha would set out wandering. āniį¹į¹hitacÄ«varo bhagavÄ temÄsaccayena cÄrikaį¹ pakkamissatÄ«āti.
Nandiya the Sakyan heard about this. Assosi kho nandiyo sakko: āsambahulÄ kira bhikkhÅ« bhagavato cÄ«varakammaį¹ karonti: āniį¹į¹hitacÄ«varo bhagavÄ temÄsaccayena cÄrikaį¹ pakkamissatÄ«āāti. He went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him: Atha kho nandiyo sakko yena bhagavÄ tenupasaį¹ kami; upasaį¹ kamitvÄ bhagavantaį¹ abhivÄdetvÄ ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho nandiyo sakko bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca:
āSir, I have heard that āsutaį¹ metaį¹, bhante: several mendicants are making a robe for the Buddha, thinking that āsambahulÄ kira bhikkhÅ« bhagavato cÄ«varakammaį¹ karontiāwhen his robe was finished and the three months of the rains residence had passed the Buddha would set out wandering. niį¹į¹hitacÄ«varo bhagavÄ temÄsaccayena cÄrikaį¹ pakkamissatÄ«āti. Now, we spend our life in various ways. Which of these should we practice?ā Tesaį¹ no, bhante, nÄnÄvihÄrehi viharataį¹ kenassa vihÄrena vihÄtabbanāti?
āGood, good Nandiya! āSÄdhu sÄdhu, nandiya. Itās appropriate that gentlemen such as you come to me and ask: Etaį¹ kho, nandiya, tumhÄkaį¹ patirÅ«paį¹ kulaputtÄnaį¹, yaį¹ tumhe tathÄgataį¹ upasaį¹ kamitvÄ puccheyyÄtha: āWe spend our life in various ways. Which of these should we practice?ā ātesaį¹ no, bhante, nÄnÄvihÄrehi viharataį¹ kenassa vihÄrena vihÄtabbanāti? The faithful succeed, not the faithless. Saddho kho, nandiya, ÄrÄdhako hoti, no assaddho; The ethical succeed, not the unethical. sÄ«lavÄ ÄrÄdhako hoti, no dussÄ«lo; The energetic succeed, not the lazy. ÄraddhavÄ«riyo ÄrÄdhako hoti, no kusÄ«to; The mindful succeed, not the unmindful. upaį¹į¹hitassati ÄrÄdhako hoti, no muį¹į¹hassati; Those with immersion succeed, not those without immersion. samÄhito ÄrÄdhako hoti, no asamÄhito; The wise succeed, not the witless. paƱƱavÄ ÄrÄdhako hoti, no duppaƱƱo. When youāre grounded on these six things, go on to establish mindfulness on five further things internally. Imesu kho te, nandiya, chasu dhammesu patiį¹į¹hÄya paƱcasu dhammesu ajjhattaį¹ sati upaį¹į¹hÄpetabbÄ.
Firstly, you should recollect the Realized One: Idha tvaį¹, nandiya, tathÄgataį¹ anussareyyÄsi: āThat Blessed One is perfected, a fully awakened Buddha, accomplished in knowledge and conduct, holy, knower of the world, supreme guide for those fit for training, teacher of gods and humans, awakened, blessed.ā āitipi so bhagavÄ arahaį¹ sammÄsambuddho vijjÄcaraį¹asampanno sugato lokavidÅ« anuttaro purisadammasÄrathi, satthÄ devamanussÄnaį¹ buddho bhagavÄāti. In this way you should establish mindfulness internally based on the Realized One. Iti kho te, nandiya, tathÄgataį¹ Ärabbha ajjhattaį¹ sati upaį¹į¹hÄpetabbÄ.
Furthermore, you should recollect the teaching: Puna caparaį¹ tvaį¹, nandiya, dhammaį¹ anussareyyÄsi: āThe teaching is well explained by the Buddhaāapparent in the present life, immediately effective, inviting inspection, relevant, so that sensible people can know it for themselves.ā āsvÄkkhÄto bhagavatÄ dhammo sandiį¹į¹hiko akÄliko ehipassiko opaneyyiko paccattaį¹ veditabbo viññūhÄ«āti. In this way you should establish mindfulness internally based on the teaching. Iti kho te, nandiya, dhammaį¹ Ärabbha ajjhattaį¹ sati upaį¹į¹hÄpetabbÄ.
Furthermore, you should recollect your good friends: Puna caparaį¹ tvaį¹, nandiya, kalyÄį¹amitte anussareyyÄsi: āIām fortunate, so very fortunate, ālÄbhÄ vata me, suladdhaį¹ vata me, to have good friends who advise and instruct me out of kindness and sympathy.ā yassa me kalyÄį¹amittÄ anukampakÄ atthakÄmÄ ovÄdakÄ anusÄsakÄāti. In this way you should establish mindfulness internally based on good friends. Iti kho te, nandiya, kalyÄį¹amitte Ärabbha ajjhattaį¹ sati upaį¹į¹hÄpetabbÄ.
Furthermore, you should recollect your own generosity: Puna caparaį¹ tvaį¹, nandiya, attano cÄgaį¹ anussareyyÄsi: āIām so fortunate, so very fortunate. ālÄbhÄ vata me, suladdhaį¹ vata me, Among people with hearts full of the stain of stinginess I live at home rid of stinginess, freely generous, open-handed, loving to let go, committed to charity, loving to give and to share.ā yohaį¹ maccheramalapariyuį¹į¹hitÄya pajÄya vigatamalamaccherena cetasÄ agÄraį¹ ajjhÄvasÄmi muttacÄgo payatapÄį¹i vossaggarato yÄcayogo dÄnasaį¹vibhÄgaratoāti. In this way you should establish mindfulness internally based on generosity. Iti kho te, nandiya, cÄgaį¹ Ärabbha ajjhattaį¹ sati upaį¹į¹hÄpetabbÄ.
Furthermore, you should recollect the deities: Puna caparaį¹ tvaį¹, nandiya, devatÄ anussareyyÄsi: āThere are deities who, surpassing the company of deities that consume edible food, are reborn in a certain host of mind-made deities. They donāt see in themselves anything more to do, or anything that needs improvement.ā āyÄ devatÄ atikkammeva kabaįø·Ä«kÄrÄhÄrabhakkhÄnaį¹ devatÄnaį¹ sahabyataį¹ aƱƱataraį¹ manomayaį¹ kÄyaį¹ upapannÄ, tÄ karaį¹Ä«yaį¹ attano na samanupassanti katassa vÄ paticayaį¹ā. An irreversibly freed mendicant doesnāt see in themselves anything more to do, or anything that needs improvement. SeyyathÄpi, nandiya, bhikkhu asamayavimutto karaį¹Ä«yaį¹ attano na samanupassati katassa vÄ paticayaį¹; In the same way, Nandiya, there are deities who, surpassing the company of deities that consume edible food, are reborn in a certain host of mind-made deities. They donāt see in themselves anything more to do, or anything that needs improvement. evamevaį¹ kho, nandiya, yÄ tÄ devatÄ atikkammeva kabaįø·Ä«kÄrÄhÄrabhakkhÄnaį¹ devatÄnaį¹ sahabyataį¹ aƱƱataraį¹ manomayaį¹ kÄyaį¹ upapannÄ, tÄ karaį¹Ä«yaį¹ attano na samanupassanti katassa vÄ paticayaį¹. In this way you should establish mindfulness internally based on the deities. Iti kho te, nandiya, devatÄ Ärabbha ajjhattaį¹ sati upaį¹į¹hÄpetabbÄ.
A noble disciple who possesses these eleven qualities gives up bad, unskillful qualities and doesnāt cling to them. Imehi kho, nandiya, ekÄdasahi dhammehi samannÄgato ariyasÄvako pajahateva pÄpake akusale dhamme, na upÄdiyati. Itās like when a pot full of water is tipped over, so the water drains out and doesnāt go back in. SeyyathÄpi, nandiya, kumbho nikkujjo vamateva udakaį¹, no vantaį¹ paccÄvamati; Suppose there was an uncontrolled fire. It advances burning up dry woodlands and doesnāt turn back over what it has burned. seyyathÄpi vÄ pana, nandiya, sukkhe tiį¹adÄye aggi mutto įøahaƱƱeva gacchati, no daįøįøhaį¹ paccudÄvattati; In the same way, a noble disciple who possesses these eleven qualities gives up bad, unskillful qualities and doesnāt cling to them.ā evamevaį¹ kho, nandiya, imehi ekÄdasahi dhammehi samannÄgato ariyasÄvako pajahateva pÄpake akusale dhamme, na upÄdiyatÄ«āti.
