The Chapter on Hopes That Are Hard to Give Up 11. Āsāduppajahavagga

“These two hopes are hard to give up. “Dvemā, bhikkhave, āsā duppajahā. What two? Katamā dve? The hope for wealth and the hope for long life. Lābhāsā ca jīvitāsā ca. These are two hopes that are hard to give up.” Imā kho, bhikkhave, dve āsā duppajahā”ti.

“These two individuals are rare in the world. “Dveme, bhikkhave, puggalā dullabhā lokasmiṁ. What two? Katame dve? One who takes the initiative, and one who is grateful and thankful. Yo ca pubbakārī, yo ca kataññū katavedī. These are the two individuals who are rare in the world.” Ime kho, bhikkhave, dve puggalā dullabhā lokasmin”ti.

“These two individuals are rare in the world. “Dveme, bhikkhave, puggalā dullabhā lokasmiṁ. What two? Katame dve? One who is satisfied, and one who satisfies others. Titto ca tappetā ca. These are the two individuals who are rare in the world.” Ime kho, bhikkhave, dve puggalā dullabhā lokasmin”ti.

“These two individuals are hard to satisfy in the world. “Dveme, bhikkhave, puggalā duttappayā. What two? Katame dve? One who continually hoards wealth, and one who continually wastes wealth. Yo ca laddhaṁ laddhaṁ nikkhipati, yo ca laddhaṁ laddhaṁ vissajjeti. These are the two individuals who are hard to satisfy in the world.” Ime kho, bhikkhave, dve puggalā duttappayā”ti.

“These two individuals are easy to satisfy in the world. “Dveme, bhikkhave, puggalā sutappayā. What two? Katame dve? One who does not continually hoard wealth, and one who does not continually waste wealth. Yo ca laddhaṁ laddhaṁ na nikkhipati, yo ca laddhaṁ laddhaṁ na vissajjeti. These are the two individuals who are easy to satisfy in the world.” Ime kho, bhikkhave, dve puggalā sutappayā”ti.

“There are two conditions for the arising of greed. “Dveme, bhikkhave, paccayā rāgassa uppādāya. What two? Katame dve? The feature of beauty and irrational application of mind. Subhanimittañca ayoniso ca manasikāro. These are the two conditions for the arising of greed.” Ime kho, bhikkhave, dve paccayā rāgassa uppādāyā”ti.

“There are two conditions for the arising of hate. “Dveme, bhikkhave, paccayā dosassa uppādāya. What two? Katame dve? The feature of harshness and irrational application of mind. Paṭighanimittañca ayoniso ca manasikāro. These are the two conditions for the arising of hate.” Ime kho, bhikkhave, dve paccayā dosassa uppādāyā”ti.

“There are two conditions for the arising of wrong view. “Dveme, bhikkhave, paccayā micchādiṭṭhiyā uppādāya. What two? Katame dve? The voice of another and irrational application of mind. Parato ca ghoso ayoniso ca manasikāro. These are the two conditions for the arising of wrong view.” Ime kho, bhikkhave, dve paccayā micchādiṭṭhiyā uppādāyā”ti.

“There are two conditions for the arising of right view. “Dveme, bhikkhave, paccayā sammādiṭṭhiyā uppādāya. What two? Katame dve? The voice of another and rational application of mind. Parato ca ghoso, yoniso ca manasikāro. These are the two conditions for the arising of right view.” Ime kho, bhikkhave, dve paccayā sammādiṭṭhiyā uppādāyā”ti.

“There are these two offenses. “Dvemā, bhikkhave, āpattiyo. What two? Katamā dve? A light offense and a serious offense. Lahukā ca āpatti, garukā ca āpatti. These are the two offenses.” Imā kho, bhikkhave, dve āpattiyo”ti.

“There are these two offenses. “Dvemā, bhikkhave, āpattiyo. What two? Katamā dve? An offense with corrupt intention and an offense without corrupt intention. Duṭṭhullā ca āpatti, aduṭṭhullā ca āpatti. These are the two offenses.” Imā kho, bhikkhave, dve āpattiyo”ti.

“There are these two offenses. “Dvemā, bhikkhave, āpattiyo. What two? Katamā dve? An offense requiring rehabilitation and an offense not requiring rehabilitation. Sāvasesā ca āpatti, anavasesā ca āpatti. These are the two offenses.” Imā kho, bhikkhave, dve āpattiyo”ti.
