A Trainee Sekkhasutta
Then a mendicant went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him: Atha kho aƱƱataro bhikkhu yena bhagavÄ tenupasaį¹ kami; upasaį¹ kamitvÄ bhagavantaį¹ abhivÄdetvÄ ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho so bhikkhu bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca:
āSir, they speak of the one called āa traineeā. āāSekho, sekhoāti, bhante, vuccati. How is a trainee defined?ā KittÄvatÄ nu kho, bhante, sekho hotÄ«āti?
āThey train, mendicant, thatās why theyāre called āa traineeā. āSikkhatÄ«ti kho, bhikkhu, tasmÄ sekhoti vuccati. What is their training? KiƱca sikkhati? They train in the higher ethics, the higher mind, and the higher wisdom. AdhisÄ«lampi sikkhati, adhicittampi sikkhati, adhipaƱƱampi sikkhati. They train, thatās why theyāre called āa traineeā. SikkhatÄ«ti kho, bhikkhu, tasmÄ sekhoti vuccatÄ«ti.
As a trainee trains, Sekhassa sikkhamÄnassa, following the straight road, ujumaggÄnusÄrino; first they know about ending; Khayasmiį¹ paį¹hamaṠñÄį¹aį¹, enlightenment follows in the same lifetime. tato aĆ±Ć±Ä anantarÄ.
Then the knowledge comes Tato aƱƱÄvimuttassa, such a one, freed through enlightenment, ƱÄį¹aį¹ ve hoti tÄdino; with the end of the fetters of continued existence: AkuppÄ me vimuttÄ«ti, āMy freedom is unshakable.āā bhavasaį¹yojanakkhayeāti.
