A Trainee Sekkhasutta

Then a mendicant went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him: Atha kho aƱƱataro bhikkhu yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho so bhikkhu bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:

ā€œSir, they speak of the one called ā€˜a trainee’. ā€œā€˜Sekho, sekho’ti, bhante, vuccati. How is a trainee defined?ā€ Kittāvatā nu kho, bhante, sekho hotÄ«ā€ti?

ā€œThey train, mendicant, that’s why they’re called ā€˜a trainee’. ā€œSikkhatÄ«ti kho, bhikkhu, tasmā sekhoti vuccati. What is their training? KiƱca sikkhati? They train in the higher ethics, the higher mind, and the higher wisdom. AdhisÄ«lampi sikkhati, adhicittampi sikkhati, adhipaƱƱampi sikkhati. They train, that’s why they’re called ā€˜a trainee’. SikkhatÄ«ti kho, bhikkhu, tasmā sekhoti vuccatÄ«ti.

As a trainee trains, Sekhassa sikkhamānassa, following the straight road, ujumaggānusārino; first they know about ending; Khayasmiṁ paį¹­hamaṁ ñāṇaṁ, enlightenment follows in the same lifetime. tato aƱƱā anantarā.

Then the knowledge comes Tato aƱƱāvimuttassa, such a one, freed through enlightenment, ñāṇaṁ ve hoti tādino; with the end of the fetters of continued existence: Akuppā me vimuttÄ«ti, ā€˜My freedom is unshakable.ā€™ā€ bhavasaṁyojanakkhayeā€ti.
