āMendicants, these are the three assemblies. āTisso imÄ, bhikkhave, parisÄ. What three? KatamÄ tisso? An assembly of the best, a divided assembly, and a harmonious assembly. AggavatÄ« parisÄ, vaggÄ parisÄ, samaggÄ parisÄ.
And what is an assembly of the best? KatamÄ ca, bhikkhave, aggavatÄ« parisÄ? An assembly where the senior mendicants are not indulgent or slack, nor are they backsliders. Instead, they take the lead in seclusion, rousing energy for attaining the unattained, achieving the unachieved, and realizing the unrealized. And those who come afterwards follow their example. Idha, bhikkhave, yassaį¹ parisÄyaį¹ therÄ bhikkhÅ« na bÄhulikÄ honti na sÄthalikÄ, okkamane nikkhittadhurÄ paviveke pubbaį¹ gamÄ, vÄ«riyaį¹ Ärabhanti appattassa pattiyÄ anadhigatassa adhigamÄya asacchikatassa sacchikiriyÄya, tesaį¹ pacchimÄ janatÄ diį¹į¹hÄnugatiį¹ Äpajjati. They too are not indulgent or slack, nor are they backsliders. And what is a divided assembly? KatamÄ ca, bhikkhave, vaggÄ parisÄ? An assembly where the mendicants fight, quarrel, and dispute, continually wounding each other with barbed words. This is called a divided assembly. Idha, bhikkhave, yassaį¹ parisÄyaį¹ bhikkhÅ« bhaį¹įøanajÄtÄ kalahajÄtÄ vivÄdÄpannÄ aƱƱamaƱƱaį¹ mukhasattÄ«hi vitudantÄ viharanti, ayaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhave, vaggÄ parisÄ.
And what is a harmonious assembly? KatamÄ ca, bhikkhave, samaggÄ parisÄ? An assembly where the mendicants live in harmony, appreciating each other, without dispute, blending like milk and water, and regarding each other with kindly eyes. This is called a harmonious assembly. Idha, bhikkhave, yassaį¹ parisÄyaį¹ bhikkhÅ« samaggÄ sammodamÄnÄ avivadamÄnÄ khÄ«rodakÄ«bhÅ«tÄ aƱƱamaƱƱaį¹ piyacakkhÅ«hi sampassantÄ viharanti, ayaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhave, samaggÄ parisÄ.
When the mendicants live in harmony like this, they brim with much merit. Yasmiį¹, bhikkhave, samaye bhikkhÅ« samaggÄ sammodamÄnÄ avivadamÄnÄ khÄ«rodakÄ«bhÅ«tÄ aƱƱamaƱƱaį¹ piyacakkhÅ«hi sampassantÄ viharanti, bahuį¹, bhikkhave, bhikkhÅ« tasmiį¹ samaye puƱƱaį¹ pasavanti. At that time the mendicants live in a divine dwelling, that is, the heartās release by rejoicing. Brahmaį¹, bhikkhave, vihÄraį¹ tasmiį¹ samaye bhikkhÅ« viharanti, yadidaį¹ muditÄya cetovimuttiyÄ. When theyāre joyful, rapture springs up. When the mind is full of rapture, the body becomes tranquil. When the body is tranquil, they feel bliss. And when theyāre blissful, the mind becomes immersed in samÄdhi. Pamuditassa pÄ«ti jÄyati, pÄ«timanassa kÄyo passambhati, passaddhakÄyo sukhaį¹ vediyati, sukhino cittaį¹ samÄdhiyati.
Itās like when the heavens rain heavily on a mountain top, and the water flows downhill to fill the hollows, crevices, and creeks. As they become full, they fill up the pools. The pools fill up the lakes, the lakes fill up the streams, and the streams fill up the rivers. And as the rivers become full, they fill up the ocean. SeyyathÄpi, bhikkhave, uparipabbate thullaphusitake deve vassante taį¹ udakaį¹ yathÄninnaį¹ pavattamÄnaį¹ pabbatakandarapadarasÄkhÄ paripÅ«reti, pabbatakandarapadarasÄkhÄ paripÅ«rÄ kusobbhe paripÅ«renti, kusobbhÄ paripÅ«rÄ mahÄsobbhe paripÅ«renti, mahÄsobbhÄ paripÅ«rÄ kunnadiyo paripÅ«renti, kunnadiyo paripÅ«rÄ mahÄnadiyo paripÅ«renti, mahÄnadiyo paripÅ«rÄ samuddaį¹ paripÅ«renti.
