At one time the Buddha was staying near RÄjagaha, in the Bamboo Grove, the squirrelsā feeding ground. Ekaį¹ samayaį¹ bhagavÄ rÄjagahe viharati veįø·uvane kalandakanivÄpe. Then VassakÄra the brahmin, a chief minister of Magadha, went up to the Buddha, and exchanged greetings with him. Atha kho vassakÄro brÄhmaį¹o magadhamahÄmatto yena bhagavÄ tenupasaį¹ kami; upasaį¹ kamitvÄ bhagavatÄ saddhiį¹ sammodi. When the greetings and polite conversation were over, he sat down to one side and said to the Buddha: SammodanÄ«yaį¹ kathaį¹ sÄraį¹Ä«yaį¹ vÄ«tisÄretvÄ ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. āWorthy Gotama, when someone has four qualities we describe him as a great man with great wisdom. āCatÅ«hi kho mayaį¹, bho gotama, dhammehi samannÄgataį¹ mahÄpaƱƱaį¹ mahÄpurisaį¹ paƱƱÄpema. What four? Katamehi catÅ«hi?
They are very learned in diverse fields of learning. Idha, bho gotama, bahussuto hoti tassa tasseva sutajÄtassa
They understand the meaning of diverse statements, saying: āThis is what that statement means; that is what this statement means.ā tassa tasseva kho pana bhÄsitassa atthaį¹ jÄnÄti: āayaį¹ imassa bhÄsitassa attho, ayaį¹ imassa bhÄsitassa atthoāti.
They are mindful, able to remember and recollect what was said and done long ago. SatimÄ kho pana hoti cirakatampi cirabhÄsitampi saritÄ anussaritÄ
They are deft and tireless in household duties, understanding how to go about things in order to complete and organize the work. yÄni kho pana tÄni gahaį¹į¹hakÄni kiį¹ karaį¹Ä«yÄni, tattha dakkho hoti analaso, tatrupÄyÄya vÄ«maį¹sÄya samannÄgato alaį¹ kÄtuį¹ alaį¹ saį¹vidhÄtuį¹.
When someone possesses these four qualities we describe him as a great man with great wisdom. Imehi kho mayaį¹, bho gotama, catÅ«hi dhammehi samannÄgataį¹ mahÄpaƱƱaį¹ mahÄpurisaį¹ paƱƱÄpema. If the worthy Gotama agrees with me, please say so. Sace me, bho gotama, anumoditabbaį¹ anumodatu me bhavaį¹ gotamo; If he disagrees, please say so.ā sace pana me, bho gotama, paį¹ikkositabbaį¹ paį¹ikkosatu me bhavaį¹ gotamoāti.
āBrahmin, I neither agree nor disagree with you, āNeva kho tyÄhaį¹, brÄhmaį¹a, anumodÄmi na paį¹ikkosÄmi. but when someone has four qualities I describe him as a great man with great wisdom. CatÅ«hi kho ahaį¹, brÄhmaį¹a, dhammehi samannÄgataį¹ mahÄpaƱƱaį¹ mahÄpurisaį¹ paƱƱÄpemi. What four? Katamehi catÅ«hi?
Itās when someone practices for the welfare and happiness of the people. Idha, brÄhmaį¹a, bahujanahitÄya paį¹ipanno hoti bahujanasukhÄya; Theyāve established many people in the noble system, that is, the principles of goodness and skillfulness. bahuāssa janatÄ ariye ƱÄye patiį¹į¹hÄpitÄ, yadidaį¹ kalyÄį¹adhammatÄ kusaladhammatÄ.
They think what they want to think, and donāt think what they donāt want to think. They realize the undefiled freedom of heart and freedom by wisdom in this very life. And they live having realized it with their own insight due to the ending of defilements. ÄsavÄnaį¹ khayÄ anÄsavaį¹ cetovimuttiį¹ paƱƱÄvimuttiį¹ diį¹į¹heva dhamme sayaį¹ abhiĆ±Ć±Ä sacchikatvÄ upasampajja viharati.
Brahmin, I neither agree nor disagree with you, Neva kho tyÄhaį¹, brÄhmaį¹a, anumodÄmi na pana paį¹ikkosÄmi. but when someone possesses these four qualities I describe him as a great man with great wisdom.ā Imehi kho ahaį¹, brÄhmaį¹a, catÅ«hi dhammehi samannÄgataį¹ mahÄpaƱƱaį¹ mahÄpurisaį¹ paƱƱÄpemÄ«āti.
āItās incredible, worthy Gotama, itās amazing! āAcchariyaį¹, bho gotama, abbhutaį¹, bho gotama. How well said this was by the worthy Gotama! YÄva subhÄsitaƱcidaį¹ bhotÄ gotamena. And we will remember the worthy Gotama as someone who possesses these four qualities. Imehi ca mayaį¹, bho gotama, catÅ«hi dhammehi samannÄgataį¹ bhavantaį¹ gotamaį¹ dhÄrema; For the worthy Gotama practices for the welfare and happiness of the people ⦠bhavaƱhi gotamo bahujanahitÄya paį¹ipanno bahujanasukhÄya; bahu te janatÄ ariye ƱÄye patiį¹į¹hÄpitÄ, yadidaį¹ kalyÄį¹adhammatÄ kusaladhammatÄ. āYour words are clearly invasive and intrusive, brahmin. āAddhÄ kho tyÄhaį¹, brÄhmaį¹a, Äsajja upanÄ«ya vÄcÄ bhÄsitÄ. Nevertheless, I will answer you. He is skilled in what is the path
and what is not the path,
MaggÄmaggassa kusalo, he has completed the task
