Corruptions Upakkilesasutta

In the same way, these four things corrupt ascetics and brahmins, so they don’t shine and glow and radiate. Evamevaṁ kho, bhikkhave, cattārome samaṇabrāhmaṇānaṁ upakkilesā, yehi upakkilesehi upakkiliį¹­į¹­hā eke samaṇabrāhmaṇā na tapanti na bhāsanti na virocanti. What four? Katame cattāro?

There are some ascetics and brahmins who drink beer and wine, not refraining from drinking beer and wine. Santi, bhikkhave, eke samaṇabrāhmaṇā suraṁ pivanti merayaṁ, surāmerayapānā appaį¹­iviratā. This is the first thing that corrupts ascetics and brahmins … Ayaṁ, bhikkhave, paį¹­hamo samaṇabrāhmaṇānaṁ upakkileso, yena upakkilesena upakkiliį¹­į¹­hā eke samaṇabrāhmaṇā na tapanti na bhāsanti na virocanti.

There are some ascetics and brahmins who have sex, not refraining from sex. Santi, bhikkhave, eke samaṇabrāhmaṇā methunaṁ dhammaṁ paį¹­isevanti, methunasmā dhammā appaį¹­iviratā. This is the second thing that corrupts ascetics and brahmins … Ayaṁ, bhikkhave, dutiyo samaṇabrāhmaṇānaṁ upakkileso, yena upakkilesena upakkiliį¹­į¹­hā eke samaṇabrāhmaṇā na tapanti na bhāsanti na virocanti.

There are some ascetics and brahmins who accept gold and currency, not refraining from receiving gold and currency. Santi, bhikkhave, eke samaṇabrāhmaṇā jātarÅ«parajataṁ sādiyanti, jātarÅ«parajatapaį¹­iggahaṇā appaį¹­iviratā. This is the third thing that corrupts ascetics and brahmins … Ayaṁ, bhikkhave, tatiyo samaṇabrāhmaṇānaṁ upakkileso, yena upakkilesena upakkiliį¹­į¹­hā eke samaṇabrāhmaṇā na tapanti na bhāsanti na virocanti.

There are some ascetics and brahmins who make a living the wrong way, not refraining from wrong livelihood. Santi, bhikkhave, eke samaṇabrāhmaṇā micchājÄ«vena jÄ«vanti, micchājÄ«vā appaį¹­iviratā. This is the fourth thing that corrupts ascetics and brahmins … Ayaṁ, bhikkhave, catuttho samaṇabrāhmaṇānaṁ upakkileso, yena upakkilesena upakkiliį¹­į¹­hā eke samaṇabrāhmaṇā na tapanti na bhāsanti na virocanti.

Some ascetics and brahmins Rāgadosaparikkiį¹­į¹­hā, are plagued by greed and hate; eke samaṇabrāhmaṇā; men shrouded by ignorance, Avijjānivutā posā, enjoying things that seem pleasant. piyarÅ«pābhinandino.

Drinking beer and wine, Suraṁ pivanti merayaṁ, having sex, paį¹­isevanti methunaṁ; accepting currency and gold: Rajataṁ jātarÅ«paƱca, they’re ignorant. sādiyanti aviddasÅ«; Some ascetics and brahmins MicchājÄ«vena jÄ«vanti, make a living the wrong way. eke samaṇabrāhmaṇā.

swathed in darkness, Andhakārena onaddhā, bondservants of craving, full of attachments, taṇhādāsā sanettikā; swell the horrors of the charnel ground, Vaįøįøhenti kaį¹­asiṁ ghoraṁ, taking up future lives.ā€ ādiyanti punabbhavanā€ti.
