Quick-witted Khippanisantisutta
āMendicants, these four individuals are found in the world. āCattÄrome, bhikkhave, puggalÄ santo saį¹vijjamÄnÄ lokasmiį¹. What four? Katame cattÄro?
- One who practices to benefit themselves, but not others; attahitÄya paį¹ipanno no parahitÄya,
- one who practices to benefit others, but not themselves; parahitÄya paį¹ipanno no attahitÄya,
- one who practices to benefit neither themselves nor others; and nevattahitÄya paį¹ipanno no parahitÄya,
- one who practices to benefit both themselves and others. attahitÄya ceva paį¹ipanno parahitÄya ca.
And how does an individual practice to benefit themselves, but not others? KathaƱca, bhikkhave, puggalo attahitÄya paį¹ipanno hoti, no parahitÄya? Itās when an individual is quick-witted when it comes to skillful teachings. They readily memorize the teachings theyāve heard. They examine the meaning of teachings theyāve memorized. Understanding the meaning and the teaching, they practice in line with the teaching. Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco puggalo khippanisantÄ« ca hoti kusalesu dhammesu, sutÄnaƱca dhammÄnaį¹ dhÄrakajÄtiko hoti, dhÄtÄnaƱca dhammÄnaį¹ atthÅ«paparikkhÄ« hoti atthamaƱƱÄya dhammamaƱƱÄya, dhammÄnudhammappaį¹ipanno hoti; But theyāre not a good speaker and do not enunciate well. Their voice isnāt polished, clear, articulate, and doesnāt express the meaning. They donāt educate, encourage, fire up, and inspire their spiritual companions. no ca kalyÄį¹avÄco hoti kalyÄį¹avÄkkaraį¹o poriyÄ vÄcÄya samannÄgato vissaį¹į¹hÄya anelagalÄya atthassa viƱƱÄpaniyÄ, no ca sandassako hoti samÄdapako samuttejako sampahaį¹sako sabrahmacÄrÄ«naį¹.
