There Venerable SÄriputta addressed the mendicants: Tatra kho ÄyasmÄ sÄriputto bhikkhÅ« Ämantesi: āReverends, mendicants!ā āÄvuso bhikkhaveāti.
āReverend,ā they replied. āÄvusoāti kho te bhikkhÅ« Äyasmato sÄriputtassa paccassosuį¹. SÄriputta said this: ÄyasmÄ sÄriputto etadavoca:
āA mendicant with five qualities is fit to hold a discussion with their spiritual companions. āPaƱcahÄvuso, dhammehi samannÄgato bhikkhu alaį¹ sÄkaccho sabrahmacÄrÄ«naį¹. What five? Katamehi paƱcahi?
A mendicant is personally accomplished in ethics, and answers questions that come up when discussing accomplishment in ethics. IdhÄvuso, bhikkhu attanÄ ca sÄ«lasampanno hoti, sÄ«lasampadÄkathÄya ca Ägataį¹ paƱhaį¹ byÄkattÄ hoti;
Theyāre personally accomplished in immersion, ⦠attanÄ ca samÄdhisampanno hoti, samÄdhisampadÄkathÄya ca Ägataį¹ paƱhaį¹ byÄkattÄ hoti;
Theyāre personally accomplished in wisdom, ⦠attanÄ ca paƱƱÄsampanno hoti, paƱƱÄsampadÄkathÄya ca Ägataį¹ paƱhaį¹ byÄkattÄ hoti;
Theyāre personally accomplished in freedom, ⦠attanÄ ca vimuttisampanno hoti, vimuttisampadÄkathÄya ca Ägataį¹ paƱhaį¹ byÄkattÄ hoti;
Theyāre personally accomplished in the knowledge and vision of freedom, and they answer questions that come up when discussing accomplishment in the knowledge and vision of freedom. attanÄ ca vimuttiƱÄį¹adassanasampanno hoti, vimuttiƱÄį¹adassanasampadÄkathÄya ca Ägataį¹ paƱhaį¹ byÄkattÄ hoti.
