What five? Katame paƱca? I will speak at the right time, not at the wrong time. KÄlena vakkhÄmi, no akÄlena; I will speak truthfully, not falsely. bhÅ«tena vakkhÄmi, no abhÅ«tena; I will speak gently, not harshly. saį¹hena vakkhÄmi, no pharusena; I will speak beneficially, not harmfully. atthasaį¹hitena vakkhÄmi, no anatthasaį¹hitena; I will speak lovingly, not from secret hate. mettacitto vakkhÄmi, no dosantaro. An individual who is accused should ground themselves in two things: Cuditena, Ävuso, puggalena dvÄ«su dhammesu patiį¹į¹hÄtabbaį¹ātruth and an even temper. sacce ca, akuppe ca. Even if others accuse meāat the right time or the wrong time, truthfully or falsely, gently or harshly, beneficially or harmfully, lovingly or with secret hateāI will still ground myself in two things: MaƱcepi, Ävuso, pare codeyyuį¹ kÄlena vÄ akÄlena vÄ bhÅ«tena vÄ abhÅ«tena vÄ saį¹hena vÄ pharusena vÄ atthasaį¹hitena vÄ anatthasaį¹hitena vÄ mettacittÄ vÄ dosantarÄ vÄ, ahampi dvÄ«suyeva dhammesu patiį¹į¹haheyyaį¹ātruth and an even temper. sacce ca, akuppe ca. If I know that Sace jÄneyyaį¹: that quality is found in me, I will tell them that it is. āattheso mayi dhammoāti, āatthÄ«āti naį¹ vadeyyaį¹: āsaį¹vijjateso mayi dhammoāti. If I know that Sace jÄneyyaį¹: that quality is not found in me, I will tell them that it is not.ā ānattheso mayi dhammoāti, ānatthÄ«āti naį¹ vadeyyaį¹: āneso dhammo mayi saį¹vijjatÄ«āāti.
āEven when you speak like this, SÄriputta, there are still some futile people here who do not respectfully take it up.ā āEvampi kho te, sÄriputta, vuccamÄnÄ atha ca panidhekacce moghapurisÄ na padakkhiį¹aį¹ gaį¹hantÄ«āti.
āSir, there are those faithless individuals who went forth from the lay life to homelessness not out of faith but to earn a livelihood. Theyāre devious, deceitful, and sneaky. Theyāre restless, insolent, fickle, scurrilous, and loose-tongued. They do not guard their sense doors or eat in moderation, and they are not dedicated to wakefulness. They donāt care about the ascetic life, and donāt keenly respect the training. Theyāre indulgent and slack, leaders in backsliding, neglecting seclusion, lazy, and lacking energy. Theyāre unmindful, lacking situational awareness and immersion, with straying minds, witless and idiotic. Sir, there are those gentlemen who went forth from the lay life to homelessness out of faith. Theyāre not devious, deceitful, and sneaky.
