At one time the Buddha was staying near RÄjagaha, in the Bamboo Grove, the squirrelsā feeding ground. Ekaį¹ samayaį¹ bhagavÄ rÄjagahe viharati veįø·uvane kalandakanivÄpe. Then Princess CundÄ«, escorted by five hundred chariots and five hundred royal maidens, went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him: Atha kho cundÄ« rÄjakumÄrÄ« paƱcahi rathasatehi paƱcahi ca kumÄrisatehi parivutÄ yena bhagavÄ tenupasaį¹ kami; upasaį¹ kamitvÄ bhagavantaį¹ abhivÄdetvÄ ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaį¹ nisinnÄ kho cundÄ« rÄjakumÄrÄ« bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca:
āSir, my brother, Prince Cunda, says this: āAmhÄkaį¹, bhante, bhÄtÄ cundo nÄma rÄjakumÄro, so evamÄha: āTake a woman or man who goes for refuge to the Buddha, the teaching, and the Saį¹ gha, and doesnāt kill living creatures, steal, commit sexual misconduct, lie, or consume intoxicants of beer, wine, and liquor. Only then do they get reborn in a good place, not a bad place, when their body breaks up, after death.ā āyadeva so hoti itthÄ« vÄ puriso vÄ buddhaį¹ saraį¹aį¹ gato, dhammaį¹ saraį¹aį¹ gato, saį¹ ghaį¹ saraį¹aį¹ gato, pÄį¹ÄtipÄtÄ paį¹ivirato, adinnÄdÄnÄ paį¹ivirato, kÄmesumicchÄcÄrÄ paį¹ivirato, musÄvÄdÄ paį¹ivirato, surÄmerayamajjapamÄdaį¹į¹hÄnÄ paį¹ivirato, so kÄyassa bhedÄ paraį¹ maraį¹Ä sugatiį¹yeva upapajjati, no duggatināti. And so I ask the Buddha: SÄhaį¹, bhante, bhagavantaį¹ pucchÄmi: Sir, what kind of teacher should you have confidence in so as to be reborn in a good place, not a bad place, when the body breaks up, after death? ākathaį¹rÅ«pe kho, bhante, satthari pasanno kÄyassa bhedÄ paraį¹ maraį¹Ä sugatiį¹yeva upapajjati, no duggatiį¹? Sir, what kind of teaching should you have confidence in so as to be reborn in a good place, not a bad place, when the body breaks up, after death? Kathaį¹rÅ«pe dhamme pasanno kÄyassa bhedÄ paraį¹ maraį¹Ä sugatiį¹yeva upapajjati, no duggatiį¹? Sir, what kind of Saį¹ gha should you have confidence in so as to be reborn in a good place, not a bad place, when the body breaks up, after death? Kathaį¹rÅ«pe saį¹ ghe pasanno kÄyassa bhedÄ paraį¹ maraį¹Ä sugatiį¹yeva upapajjati, no duggatiį¹? Sir, what kind of ethics should you fulfill so as to be reborn in a good place, not a bad place, when the body breaks up, after death?ā Kathaį¹rÅ«pesu sÄ«lesu paripÅ«rakÄrÄ« kÄyassa bhedÄ paraį¹ maraį¹Ä sugatiį¹yeva upapajjati, no duggatināāti?
āCundÄ«, the Realized One, the perfected one, the fully awakened Buddha, is said to be the best of all sentient beingsābe they footless, with two feet, four feet, or many feet; with form or formless; with perception or without perception or with neither perception nor non-perception. āYÄvatÄ, cundi, sattÄ apadÄ vÄ dvipadÄ vÄ catuppadÄ vÄ bahuppadÄ vÄ rÅ«pino vÄ arÅ«pino vÄ saƱƱino vÄ asaƱƱino vÄ nevasaƱƱinÄsaƱƱino vÄ, tathÄgato tesaį¹ aggamakkhÄyati arahaį¹ sammÄsambuddho. Those who have confidence in the Buddha have confidence in the best. Ye kho, cundi, buddhe pasannÄ, agge te pasannÄ. Having confidence in the best, the result is the best. Agge kho pana pasannÄnaį¹ aggo vipÄko hoti.
The noble eightfold path is said to be the best of all conditioned things. YÄvatÄ, cundi, dhammÄ saį¹ khatÄ, ariyo aį¹į¹haį¹ giko maggo tesaį¹ aggamakkhÄyati. Those who have confidence in the noble eightfold path have confidence in the best. Having confidence in the best, the result is the best. Ye, cundi, ariye aį¹į¹haį¹ gike magge pasannÄ, agge te pasannÄ, agge kho pana pasannÄnaį¹ aggo vipÄko hoti.
Fading away is said to be the best of all things whether conditioned or unconditioned. YÄvatÄ, cundi, dhammÄ saį¹ khatÄ vÄ asaį¹ khatÄ vÄ, virÄgo tesaį¹ aggamakkhÄyati, yadidaį¹āThat is, the quelling of vanity, the removing of thirst, the uprooting of clinging, the breaking of the round, the ending of craving, fading away, cessation, extinguishment. madanimmadano pipÄsavinayo ÄlayasamugghÄto vaį¹į¹upacchedo taį¹hÄkkhayo virÄgo nirodho nibbÄnaį¹. Those who have confidence in the teaching of fading away have confidence in the best. Ye kho, cundi, virÄge dhamme pasannÄ, agge te pasannÄ. Having confidence in the best, the result is the best. Agge kho pana pasannÄnaį¹ aggo vipÄko hoti.
The Saį¹ gha of the Realized Oneās disciples is said to be the best of all communities and groups. YÄvatÄ, cundi, saį¹ ghÄ vÄ gaį¹Ä vÄ, tathÄgatasÄvakasaį¹ gho tesaį¹ aggamakkhÄyati, yadidaį¹āIt consists of the four pairs, the eight individual persons. This is the Saį¹ gha of the Buddhaās disciples that is worthy of offerings dedicated to the gods, worthy of hospitality, worthy of a religious donation, worthy of greeting with cupped palms, and is the supreme field of merit for the world. cattÄri purisayugÄni aį¹į¹ha purisapuggalÄ, esa bhagavato sÄvakasaį¹ gho Ähuneyyo pÄhuneyyo dakkhiį¹eyyo aƱjalikaraį¹Ä«yo anuttaraį¹ puƱƱakkhettaį¹ lokassa. Those who have confidence in the Saį¹ gha have confidence in the best. Ye kho, cundi, saį¹ ghe pasannÄ, agge te pasannÄ. Having confidence in the best, the result is the best. Agge kho pana pasannÄnaį¹ aggo vipÄko hoti.
The ethical conduct loved by the noble ones is said to be the best of all ethics. YÄvatÄ, cundi, sÄ«lÄni, ariyakantÄni sÄ«lÄni tesaį¹ aggamakkhÄyati, yadidaį¹āIt is intact, impeccable, spotless, and unmarred, liberating, praised by sensible people, not mistaken, and leading to immersion. akhaį¹įøÄni acchiddÄni asabalÄni akammÄsÄni bhujissÄni viƱƱuppasatthÄni aparÄmaį¹į¹hÄni samÄdhisaį¹vattanikÄni. Those who fulfill the ethics loved by the noble ones fulfill the best. Ye kho, cundi, ariyakantesu sÄ«lesu paripÅ«rakÄrino, agge te paripÅ«rakÄrino. Fulfilling the best, the result is the best. Agge kho pana paripÅ«rakÄrÄ«naį¹ aggo vipÄko hotÄ«ti.
For those who, knowing the best teaching, Aggato ve pasannÄnaį¹, base their confidence on the bestāaggaį¹ dhammaį¹ vijÄnataį¹; confident in the best Awakened One, Agge buddhe pasannÄnaį¹, supremely worthy of a religious donation; dakkhiį¹eyye anuttare.
confident in the best teaching, Agge dhamme pasannÄnaį¹, the bliss of fading and stilling; virÄgÅ«pasame sukhe; confident in the best Saį¹ gha, Agge saį¹ ghe pasannÄnaį¹, the supreme field of meritāpuƱƱakkhette anuttare.
giving gifts to the best, Aggasmiį¹ dÄnaį¹ dadataį¹, the best of merit grows: aggaį¹ puƱƱaį¹ pavaįøįøhati; the best lifespan, beauty, Aggaį¹ Äyu ca vaį¹į¹o ca, fame, reputation, happiness, and strength. yaso kitti sukhaį¹ balaį¹.
An intelligent person gives to the best, Aggassa dÄtÄ medhÄvÄ«, settled on the best teaching. aggadhammasamÄhito; When they become a god or human, DevabhÅ«to manusso vÄ, they rejoice at reaching the best.ā aggappatto pamodatÄ«āti.
