Faith Saddhasutta
āMendicants, a faithful gentleman gets five benefits. āPaƱcime, bhikkhave, saddhe kulaputte Änisaį¹sÄ. What five? Katame paƱca? The true persons in the world show sympathy first to the faithful, not so much to the unfaithful. Ye te, bhikkhave, loke santo sappurisÄ te saddhaƱƱeva paį¹hamaį¹ anukampantÄ anukampanti, no tathÄ assaddhaį¹; They first approach the faithful, not so much the unfaithful. saddhaƱƱeva paį¹hamaį¹ upasaį¹ kamantÄ upasaį¹ kamanti, no tathÄ assaddhaį¹; They first receive alms from the faithful, not so much the unfaithful. saddhaƱƱeva paį¹hamaį¹ paį¹iggaį¹hantÄ paį¹iggaį¹hanti, no tathÄ assaddhaį¹; They first teach Dhamma to the faithful, not so much the unfaithful. saddhaƱƱeva paį¹hamaį¹ dhammaį¹ desentÄ desenti, no tathÄ assaddhaį¹; When their body breaks up, after death, the faithful are reborn in a good place, a heavenly realm. saddho kÄyassa bhedÄ paraį¹ maraį¹Ä sugatiį¹ saggaį¹ lokaį¹ upapajjati. A faithful gentleman gets these five benefits. Ime kho, bhikkhave, paƱca saddhe kulaputte Änisaį¹sÄ.
Suppose there was a great banyan tree at a level crossroads. It would become a refuge for birds from all around. SeyyathÄpi, bhikkhave, subhÅ«miyaį¹ catumahÄpathe mahÄnigrodho samantÄ pakkhÄ«naį¹ paį¹isaraį¹aį¹ hoti; In the same way, a faithful gentleman becomes a refuge for many peopleāmonks, nuns, laywomen, and laymen. evamevaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, saddho kulaputto bahuno janassa paį¹isaraį¹aį¹ hoti bhikkhÅ«naį¹ bhikkhunÄ«naį¹ upÄsakÄnaį¹ upÄsikÄnanti.
With its branches, leaves, and fruit, SÄkhÄpattaphalÅ«peto, a great tree with its strong trunk, khandhimÄva mahÄdumo; firmly-rooted and fruit-bearing, MÅ«lavÄ phalasampanno, supports many birds. patiį¹į¹hÄ hoti pakkhinaį¹.
Itās a lovely place, Manorame Äyatane, frequented by the sky-soarers. sevanti naį¹ vihaį¹ gamÄ; Those that need shade go in the shade, ChÄyaį¹ chÄyatthikÄ yanti, those that need fruit enjoy the fruit. phalatthÄ phalabhojino.
So too, a faithful individual Tatheva sÄ«lasampannaį¹, is perfect in ethics, saddhaį¹ purisapuggalaį¹; humble and amenable, NivÄtavuttiį¹ atthaddhaį¹, gentle, courteous, and tender. sorataį¹ sakhilaį¹ muduį¹.
Those free of greed, freed of hate, VÄ«tarÄgÄ vÄ«tadosÄ, free of delusion, undefiled, vÄ«tamohÄ anÄsavÄ; fields of merit for the world, PuƱƱakkhettÄni lokasmiį¹, associate with such a person. sevanti tÄdisaį¹ naraį¹.
They teach them the Dhamma, Te tassa dhammaį¹ desenti, that casts aside all suffering. SabbadukkhÄpanÅ«danaį¹; Having understood this teaching, Yaį¹ so dhammaį¹ idhaƱƱÄya, the undefiled one is fully extinguished.ā ParinibbÄti anÄsavoāti.
