Unsurpassable Anuttariyasutta
āMendicants, these six things are unsurpassable. āChayimÄni, bhikkhave, anuttariyÄni. What six? KatamÄni cha? The unsurpassable seeing, listening, acquisition, training, service, and recollection. DassanÄnuttariyaį¹, savanÄnuttariyaį¹, lÄbhÄnuttariyaį¹, sikkhÄnuttariyaį¹, pÄricariyÄnuttariyaį¹, anussatÄnuttariyanti.
And what is the unsurpassable seeing? KatamaƱca, bhikkhave, dassanÄnuttariyaį¹? Some people go to see an elephant-treasure, a horse-treasure, a jewel-treasure, or a diverse spectrum of sights; or ascetics and brahmins of wrong view and wrong practice. Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco hatthiratanampi dassanÄya gacchati, assaratanampi dassanÄya gacchati, maį¹iratanampi dassanÄya gacchati, uccÄvacaį¹ vÄ pana dassanÄya gacchati, samaį¹aį¹ vÄ brÄhmaį¹aį¹ vÄ micchÄdiį¹į¹hikaį¹ micchÄpaį¹ipannaį¹ dassanÄya gacchati. There is such a seeing, I donāt deny it. Atthetaį¹, bhikkhave, dassanaį¹; netaį¹ natthÄ«ti vadÄmi. That seeing is low, crude, ordinary, ignoble, and pointless. It doesnāt lead to disillusionment, dispassion, cessation, peace, insight, awakening, and extinguishment. TaƱca kho etaį¹, bhikkhave, dassanaį¹ hÄ«naį¹ gammaį¹ pothujjanikaį¹ anariyaį¹ anatthasaį¹hitaį¹, na nibbidÄya na virÄgÄya na nirodhÄya na upasamÄya na abhiƱƱÄya na sambodhÄya na nibbÄnÄya saį¹vattati. The unsurpassable seeing is when someone with settled faith and love, sure and devoted, goes to see a Realized One or their disciple. This is in order to purify sentient beings, to get past sorrow and crying, to make an end of pain and sadness, to discover the system, and to realize extinguishment. But what of the unsurpassable hearing? SavanÄnuttariyaƱca kathaį¹ hoti? Some people go to hear the sound of drums, arched harps, singing, or a diverse spectrum of sounds; or ascetics and brahmins of wrong view and wrong practice. Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco bherisaddampi savanÄya gacchati, vÄ«į¹Äsaddampi savanÄya gacchati, gÄ«tasaddampi savanÄya gacchati, uccÄvacaį¹ vÄ pana savanÄya gacchati, samaį¹assa vÄ brÄhmaį¹assa vÄ micchÄdiį¹į¹hikassa micchÄpaį¹ipannassa dhammassavanÄya gacchati. There is such a hearing, I donāt deny it. Atthetaį¹, bhikkhave, savanaį¹; netaį¹ natthÄ«ti vadÄmi. That hearing ⦠doesnāt lead to extinguishment. But what of the unsurpassable acquisition? LÄbhÄnuttariyaƱca kathaį¹ hoti? Some people acquire a child, a wife, wealth, or a diverse spectrum of things; or they acquire faith in an ascetic or brahmin of wrong view and wrong practice. Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco puttalÄbhampi labhati, dÄralÄbhampi labhati, dhanalÄbhampi labhati, uccÄvacaį¹ vÄ pana lÄbhaį¹ labhati, samaį¹e vÄ brÄhmaį¹e vÄ micchÄdiį¹į¹hike micchÄpaį¹ipanne saddhaį¹ paį¹ilabhati. There is such an acquisition, I donāt deny it. Attheso, bhikkhave, lÄbho; neso natthÄ«ti vadÄmi. That acquisition ⦠doesnāt lead to extinguishment. So ca kho eso, bhikkhave, lÄbho hÄ«no gammo pothujjaniko anariyo anatthasaį¹hito, na nibbidÄya na virÄgÄya na nirodhÄya na upasamÄya na abhiƱƱÄya na sambodhÄya na nibbÄnÄya saį¹vattati. But what of the unsurpassable training? SikkhÄnuttariyaƱca kathaį¹ hoti? Some people train in elephant riding, horse riding, chariot driving, archery, swordsmanship, or a diverse spectrum of things; or they train under an ascetic or brahmin of wrong view and wrong practice. Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco hatthismimpi sikkhati, assasmimpi sikkhati, rathasmimpi sikkhati, dhanusmimpi sikkhati, tharusmimpi sikkhati, uccÄvacaį¹ vÄ pana sikkhati, samaį¹assa vÄ brÄhmaį¹assa vÄ micchÄdiį¹į¹hikassa micchÄpaį¹ipannassa sikkhati. There is such a training, I donāt deny it. AtthesÄ, bhikkhave, sikkhÄ; nesÄ natthÄ«ti vadÄmi. That training ⦠doesnāt lead to extinguishment. SÄ ca kho esÄ, bhikkhave, sikkhÄ hÄ«nÄ gammÄ pothujjanikÄ anariyÄ anatthasaį¹hitÄ, na nibbidÄya na virÄgÄya na nirodhÄya na upasamÄya na abhiƱƱÄya na sambodhÄya na nibbÄnÄya saį¹vattati. The unsurpassable training is when someone with settled faith and love, sure and devoted, trains in the higher ethics, the higher mind, and the higher wisdom in the teaching and training proclaimed by a Realized One. ⦠Yo ca kho, bhikkhave, tathÄgatappavedite dhammavinaye adhisÄ«lampi sikkhati, adhicittampi sikkhati, adhipaƱƱampi sikkhati niviį¹į¹hasaddho niviį¹į¹hapemo ekantagato abhippasanno, etadÄnuttariyaį¹, bhikkhave, sikkhÄnaį¹ sattÄnaį¹ visuddhiyÄ sokaparidevÄnaį¹ samatikkamÄya dukkhadomanassÄnaį¹ atthaį¹ gamÄya ƱÄyassa adhigamÄya nibbÄnassa sacchikiriyÄya, yadidaį¹ tathÄgatappavedite dhammavinaye adhisÄ«lampi sikkhati, adhicittampi sikkhati, adhipaƱƱampi sikkhati, niviį¹į¹hasaddho niviį¹į¹hapemo ekantagato abhippasanno. But what of the unsurpassable service? PÄricariyÄnuttariyaƱca kathaį¹ hoti? Some people serve an aristocrat, a brahmin, a householder, or a diverse spectrum of people; or they serve ascetics and brahmins of wrong view and wrong practice. Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco khattiyampi paricarati, brÄhmaį¹ampi paricarati, gahapatimpi paricarati, uccÄvacaį¹ vÄ pana paricarati, samaį¹aį¹ vÄ brÄhmaį¹aį¹ vÄ micchÄdiį¹į¹hikaį¹ micchÄpaį¹ipannaį¹ paricarati. There is such service, I donāt deny it. AtthesÄ, bhikkhave, pÄricariyÄ; nesÄ natthÄ«ti vadÄmi. That service ⦠doesnāt lead to extinguishment. Some people recollect a child, a wife, wealth, or a diverse spectrum of things; or they recollect an ascetic or brahmin of wrong view and wrong practice. These are the six unsurpassable things. ImÄni kho, bhikkhave, cha anuttariyÄnÄ«ti.
Theyāve gained the unsurpassed seeing, Ye dassanÄnuttaraį¹ laddhÄ, the unsurpassed hearing, savanaƱca anuttaraį¹; and the unsurpassable acquisition. LÄbhÄnuttariyaį¹ laddhÄ, They enjoy the unsurpassable training sikkhÄnuttariye ratÄ.
and serve with care. Upaį¹į¹hitÄ pÄricariyÄ, Then they develop recollection bhÄvayanti anussatiį¹; connected with seclusion, Vivekappaį¹isaį¹yuttaį¹, which is safe, and leads to freedom from death. khemaį¹ amatagÄminiį¹.
They rejoice in diligence, AppamÄde pamuditÄ, alert and ethically restrained. nipakÄ sÄ«lasaį¹vutÄ; And in time they arrive Te ve kÄlena paccenti, at the place where suffering ceases.ā yattha dukkhaį¹ nirujjhatÄ«āti.
