So I have heard. Evaį¹ me sutaį¹āAt one time Venerable MahÄcunda was staying in the land of the Cetis at SahajÄti. ekaį¹ samayaį¹ ÄyasmÄ mahÄcundo cetÄ«su viharati sayaį¹jÄtiyaį¹. There he addressed the mendicants: Tatra kho ÄyasmÄ mahÄcundo bhikkhÅ« Ämantesi: āReverends, mendicants!ā āÄvuso bhikkhaveāti.
āReverend,ā they replied. āÄvusoāti kho te bhikkhÅ« Äyasmato mahÄcundassa paccassosuį¹. Venerable MahÄcunda said this: ÄyasmÄ mahÄcundo etadavoca:
āTake a case where mendicants who practice discernment of principles rebuke mendicants who practice absorption: āIdhÄvuso, dhammayogÄ bhikkhÅ« jhÄyÄ« bhikkhÅ« apasÄdenti: āThey say, āWe practice absorption meditation! We practice absorption meditation!ā And they meditate and concentrate and contemplate and ruminate. āime pana jhÄyinomhÄ, jhÄyinomhÄti jhÄyanti pajjhÄyanti nijjhÄyanti avajjhÄyanti. Why do they practice absorption meditation? In what way do they practice absorption meditation? How do they practice absorption meditation?ā Kimime jhÄyanti, kintime jhÄyanti, kathaį¹ ime jhÄyantÄ«āti? In this case the mendicants who practice discernment of principles are not inspired, and the mendicants who practice absorption are not inspired. And theyāre not acting for the welfare and happiness of the people, for the people, for the benefit, welfare, and happiness of gods and humans. Tattha dhammayogÄ ca bhikkhÅ« nappasÄ«danti, jhÄyÄ« ca bhikkhÅ« nappasÄ«danti, na ca bahujanahitÄya paį¹ipannÄ honti bahujanasukhÄya bahuno janassa atthÄya hitÄya sukhÄya devamanussÄnaį¹.
Now, take a case where mendicants who practice absorption meditation rebuke mendicants who practice discernment of principles: Idha panÄvuso, jhÄyÄ« bhikkhÅ« dhammayoge bhikkhÅ« apasÄdenti: āThey say, āWe practice discernment of principles! We practice discernment of principles!ā But theyāre restless, insolent, fickle, scurrilous, loose-tongued, unmindful, lacking situational awareness and immersion, with straying minds and undisciplined faculties. āime pana dhammayogamhÄ, dhammayogamhÄti uddhatÄ unnaįø·Ä capalÄ mukharÄ vikiį¹į¹avÄcÄ muį¹į¹hassatÄ« asampajÄnÄ asamÄhitÄ vibbhantacittÄ pÄkatindriyÄ. Why do they practice discernment of principles? In what way do they practice discernment of principles? How do they practice discernment of principles?ā Kimime dhammayogÄ, kintime dhammayogÄ, kathaį¹ ime dhammayogÄāti? In this case the mendicants who practice absorption are not inspired, and the mendicants who practice discernment of principles are not inspired. And theyāre not acting for the welfare and happiness of the people, for the people, for the benefit, welfare, and happiness of gods and humans. Tattha jhÄyÄ« ca bhikkhÅ« nappasÄ«danti, dhammayogÄ ca bhikkhÅ« nappasÄ«danti, na ca bahujanahitÄya paį¹ipannÄ honti bahujanasukhÄya bahuno janassa atthÄya hitÄya sukhÄya devamanussÄnaį¹.
Now, take a case where mendicants who practice discernment of principles praise only others like them, not mendicants who practice absorption. Idha panÄvuso, dhammayogÄ bhikkhÅ« dhammayogÄnaƱƱeva bhikkhÅ«naį¹ vaį¹į¹aį¹ bhÄsanti, no jhÄyÄ«naį¹ bhikkhÅ«naį¹ vaį¹į¹aį¹ bhÄsanti.
And take a case where mendicants who practice absorption praise only others like them, not mendicants who practice discernment of principles. Idha panÄvuso, jhÄyÄ« bhikkhÅ« jhÄyÄ«naƱƱeva bhikkhÅ«naį¹ vaį¹į¹aį¹ bhÄsanti, no dhammayogÄnaį¹ bhikkhÅ«naį¹ vaį¹į¹aį¹ bhÄsanti. Tattha jhÄyÄ« ca bhikkhÅ« nappasÄ«danti, dhammayogÄ ca bhikkhÅ« nappasÄ«danti, na ca bahujanahitÄya paį¹ipannÄ honti bahujanasukhÄya bahuno janassa atthÄya hitÄya sukhÄya devamanussÄnaį¹.
So you should train like this: TasmÄtihÄvuso, evaį¹ sikkhitabbaį¹: āAs mendicants who practice discernment of principles, we will praise mendicants who practice absorption.ā ādhammayogÄ samÄnÄ jhÄyÄ«naį¹ bhikkhÅ«naį¹ vaį¹į¹aį¹ bhÄsissÄmÄāti. Thatās how you should train. EvaƱhi vo, Ävuso, sikkhitabbaį¹. Why is that? Taį¹ kissa hetu? Because itās rare to find such incredible individuals in the world who have direct meditative experience of the element free of death. AcchariyÄ hete, Ävuso, puggalÄ dullabhÄ lokasmiį¹, ye amataį¹ dhÄtuį¹ kÄyena phusitvÄ viharanti.
