Then as Venerable SÄriputta was in private retreat this thought came to his mind, Atha kho Äyasmato sÄriputtassa rahogatassa paį¹isallÄ«nassa evaį¹ cetaso parivitakko udapÄdi: āWhat should a mendicant honor and respect and rely on, to give up the unskillful and develop the skillful?ā ākiį¹ nu kho, bhikkhu, sakkatvÄ garuį¹ katvÄ upanissÄya viharanto akusalaį¹ pajaheyya, kusalaį¹ bhÄveyyÄāti?
Then he thought, Atha kho Äyasmato sÄriputtassa etadahosi: āA mendicant should honor and respect and rely on the Teacher ⦠āsatthÄraį¹ kho, bhikkhu, sakkatvÄ garuį¹ katvÄ upanissÄya viharanto akusalaį¹ pajaheyya, kusalaį¹ bhÄveyya. the teaching ⦠Dhammaį¹ kho, bhikkhu ā¦pe⦠the Saį¹ gha ⦠saį¹ ghaį¹ kho, bhikkhu ā¦pe⦠the training ⦠sikkhaį¹ kho, bhikkhu ā¦pe⦠immersion ⦠samÄdhiį¹ kho, bhikkhu ā¦pe⦠diligence ⦠appamÄdaį¹ kho, bhikkhu ā¦pe⦠A mendicant should honor and respect and rely on hospitality, to give up the unskillful and develop the skillful.ā paį¹isanthÄraį¹ kho, bhikkhu sakkatvÄ garuį¹ katvÄ upanissÄya viharanto akusalaį¹ pajaheyya, kusalaį¹ bhÄveyyÄāti.
Then he thought, Atha kho Äyasmato sÄriputtassa etadahosi: āThese qualities are pure and bright in me. Why donāt I go and tell them to the Buddha? āime kho me dhammÄ parisuddhÄ pariyodÄtÄ, yannÅ«nÄhaį¹ ime dhamme gantvÄ bhagavato Äroceyyaį¹. Then these qualities will not only be purified in me, but will be better known as purified. Evaį¹ me ime dhammÄ parisuddhÄ ceva bhavissanti parisuddhasaį¹ khÄtatarÄ ca. Suppose a man were to acquire a gold ingot, pure and bright. SeyyathÄpi nÄma puriso suvaį¹į¹anikkhaį¹ adhigaccheyya parisuddhaį¹ pariyodÄtaį¹. Theyād think, Tassa evamassa: āMy gold ingot is pure and bright. Why donāt I take it to show the smiths? āayaį¹ kho me suvaį¹į¹anikkho parisuddho pariyodÄto, yannÅ«nÄhaį¹ imaį¹ suvaį¹į¹anikkhaį¹ gantvÄ kammÄrÄnaį¹ dasseyyaį¹. Then it will not only be purified, but will be better known as purified.ā Evaį¹ me ayaį¹ suvaį¹į¹anikkho sakammÄragato parisuddho ceva bhavissati parisuddhasaį¹ khÄtataro ca. In the same way, these qualities are pure and bright in me. Why donāt I go and tell them to the Buddha? Evamevaį¹ me ime dhammÄ parisuddhÄ pariyodÄtÄ, yannÅ«nÄhaį¹ ime dhamme gantvÄ bhagavato Äroceyyaį¹. Then in the late afternoon, SÄriputta came out of retreat and went to the Buddha. He bowed, sat down to one side, and told the Buddha of his thoughts while on retreat. Atha kho ÄyasmÄ sÄriputto sÄyanhasamayaį¹ paį¹isallÄnÄ vuį¹į¹hito yena bhagavÄ tenupasaį¹ kami; upasaį¹ kamitvÄ bhagavantaį¹ abhivÄdetvÄ ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. āSir, this is how I understand the detailed meaning of the Buddhaās brief statement. āimassa kho ahaį¹, bhante, bhagavatÄ saį¹ khittena bhÄsitassa evaį¹ vitthÄrena atthaį¹ ÄjÄnÄmi. It is quite impossible for a mendicant who doesnāt respect the Teacher to respect the teaching. So vata, bhante, bhikkhu satthari agÄravo dhamme sagÄravo bhavissatÄ«ti netaį¹ į¹hÄnaį¹ vijjati. A mendicant who disrespects the Teacher disrespects the teaching. Yo so, bhante, bhikkhu satthari agÄravo dhammepi so agÄravo.
It is quite impossible for a mendicant who doesnāt respect the Teacher and the teaching to respect the Saį¹ gha. So vata, bhante, bhikkhu satthari agÄravo dhamme agÄravo saį¹ ghe sagÄravo bhavissatÄ«ti netaį¹ į¹hÄnaį¹ vijjati. A mendicant who disrespects the Teacher and the teaching disrespects the Saį¹ gha. Yo so, bhante, bhikkhu satthari agÄravo dhamme agÄravo saį¹ ghepi so agÄravo.
It is quite impossible for a mendicant who doesnāt respect the Teacher, the teaching, and the Saį¹ gha to respect the training. So vata, bhante, bhikkhu satthari agÄravo dhamme agÄravo saį¹ ghe agÄravo sikkhÄya sagÄravo bhavissatÄ«ti netaį¹ į¹hÄnaį¹ vijjati. A mendicant who disrespects the Teacher, the teaching, and the Saį¹ gha disrespects the training. Yo so, bhante, bhikkhu satthari agÄravo dhamme agÄravo saį¹ ghe agÄravo sikkhÄyapi so agÄravo.
It is quite impossible for a mendicant who doesnāt respect the Teacher, the teaching, the Saį¹ gha, and the training to respect immersion. So vata, bhante, bhikkhu satthari agÄravo dhamme agÄravo saį¹ ghe agÄravo sikkhÄya agÄravo samÄdhismiį¹ sagÄravo bhavissatÄ«ti netaį¹ į¹hÄnaį¹ vijjati. A mendicant who disrespects the Teacher, the teaching, the Saį¹ gha, and the training disrespects immersion.
