So I have heard. Evaį¹ me sutaį¹āAt one time the Buddha was wandering in the land of the Kosalans together with a large Saį¹ gha of mendicants. ekaį¹ samayaį¹ bhagavÄ kosalesu cÄrikaį¹ carati mahatÄ bhikkhusaį¹ ghena saddhiį¹.
While walking along the road, at a certain spot he saw a great mass of fire burning, blazing, and glowing. AddasÄ kho bhagavÄ addhÄnamaggappaį¹ipanno aƱƱatarasmiį¹ padese mahantaį¹ aggikkhandhaį¹ Ädittaį¹ sampajjalitaį¹ sajotibhÅ«taį¹. Seeing this he left the road, sat at the root of a tree on a seat spread out, DisvÄna maggÄ okkamma aƱƱatarasmiį¹ rukkhamÅ«le paƱƱatte Äsane nisÄ«di. and addressed the mendicants, Nisajja kho bhagavÄ bhikkhÅ« Ämantesi: āMendicants, do you see that great mass of fire burning, blazing, and glowing?ā āpassatha no tumhe, bhikkhave, amuį¹ mahantaį¹ aggikkhandhaį¹ Ädittaį¹ sampajjalitaį¹ sajotibhÅ«tanāti?

But when such an unethical man sits or lies down embracing a girl of the aristocrats or brahmins or householders with soft and tender hands and feet, that brings him lasting harm and suffering. When his body breaks up, after death, heās reborn in a place of loss, a bad place, the underworld, hell. Taį¹ kiį¹ maƱƱatha, bhikkhave, Which is betterāto have a strong man twist a strong horse-hair rope around both shins and tighten it so that it cuts through your outer skin, your inner skin, your flesh, sinews, and bones, until it reaches your marrow and keeps pressing? Or to enjoy the use of dwellings given in faith by well-to-do aristocrats or brahmins or householders?ā katamaį¹ nu kho varaį¹āyaį¹ balavÄ puriso uddhampÄdaį¹ adhosiraį¹ gahetvÄ tattÄya lohakumbhiyÄ pakkhipeyya ÄdittÄya sampajjalitÄya sajotibhÅ«tÄyaāso tattha pheį¹uddehakaį¹ paccamÄno sakimpi uddhaį¹ gaccheyya sakimpi adho gaccheyya sakimpi tiriyaį¹ gaccheyya, yaį¹ vÄ khattiyamahÄsÄlÄnaį¹ vÄ brÄhmaį¹amahÄsÄlÄnaį¹ vÄ gahapatimahÄsÄlÄnaį¹ vÄ saddhÄdeyyaį¹ vihÄraį¹ paribhuƱjeyyÄāti?
āSir, it would be much better to enjoy the use of dwellings given in faith by well-to-do aristocrats or brahmins or householders. āI declare this to you, mendicants, I announce this to you! It would be better for that unethical man to have a strong man grab him, turn him upside down, and shove him in a red-hot copper pot, burning, blazing, and glowing, where heās seared in boiling scum, and swept up and down and round and round. āÄrocayÄmi vo, bhikkhave, paį¹ivedayÄmi vo, bhikkhave, yathÄ etadeva tassa varaį¹ dussÄ«lassa pÄpadhammassa ā¦pe⦠kasambujÄtassa yaį¹ balavÄ puriso uddhampÄdaį¹ adhosiraį¹ gahetvÄ ā¦pe⦠sakimpi tiriyaį¹ gaccheyya. Why is that? Taį¹ kissa hetu? Because that might result in death or deadly pain. But when his body breaks up, after death, it would not cause him to be reborn in a place of loss, a bad place, the underworld, hell. TatonidÄnaƱhi so, bhikkhave, maraį¹aį¹ vÄ nigaccheyya maraį¹amattaį¹ vÄ dukkhaį¹, na tveva tappaccayÄ kÄyassa bhedÄ paraį¹ maraį¹Ä apÄyaį¹ duggatiį¹ vinipÄtaį¹ nirayaį¹ upapajjeyya. But when such an unethical man enjoys the use of dwellings given in faith by well-to-do aristocrats or brahmins or householders, that brings him lasting harm and suffering. When his body breaks up, after death, heās reborn in a place of loss, a bad place, the underworld, hell. YaƱca kho so, bhikkhave, dussÄ«lo pÄpadhammo ā¦pe⦠kasambujÄto khattiyamahÄsÄlÄnaį¹ vÄ brÄhmaį¹amahÄsÄlÄnaį¹ vÄ gahapatimahÄsÄlÄnaį¹ vÄ saddhÄdeyyaį¹ vihÄraį¹ paribhuƱjati. TaƱhi tassa, bhikkhave, hoti dÄ«gharattaį¹ ahitÄya dukkhÄya kÄyassa bhedÄ paraį¹ maraį¹Ä apÄyaį¹ duggatiį¹ vinipÄtaį¹ nirayaį¹ upapajjati.
So you should train like this: TasmÄtiha, bhikkhave, evaį¹ sikkhitabbaį¹: āThe services of those whose robes, almsfood, lodgings, and medicines and supplies for the sick we enjoy shall be very fruitful and beneficial for them. And our going forth will not be barren, but will be fruitful and fertile.ā āyesaƱca mayaį¹ paribhuƱjÄma cÄ«varapiį¹įøapÄtasenÄsanagilÄnappaccayabhesajjaparikkhÄraį¹ tesaį¹ te kÄrÄ mahapphalÄ bhavissanti mahÄnisaį¹sÄ, amhÄkaƱcevÄyaį¹ pabbajjÄ avaƱjhÄ bhavissati saphalÄ saudrayÄāti. Thatās how you should train. EvaƱhi vo, bhikkhave, sikkhitabbaį¹: Considering what is good for yourself, mendicants, is quite enough for you to persist with diligence. āattatthaį¹ vÄ, bhikkhave, sampassamÄnena alameva appamÄdena sampÄdetuį¹; Considering what is good for others is quite enough for you to persist with diligence. paratthaį¹ vÄ, bhikkhave, sampassamÄnena alameva appamÄdena sampÄdetuį¹; Considering what is good for both is quite enough for you to persist with diligence.ā ubhayatthaį¹ vÄ, bhikkhave, sampassamÄnena alameva appamÄdena sampÄdetunāāti.
That is what the Buddha said. Idamavoca bhagavÄ. And while this discourse was being spoken, sixty monks spewed hot blood from their mouths. ImasmiƱca pana veyyÄkaraį¹asmiį¹ bhaƱƱamÄne saį¹į¹himattÄnaį¹ bhikkhÅ«naį¹ uį¹haį¹ lohitaį¹ mukhato uggaƱchi. Sixty mendicants resigned the training and returned to a lesser life, saying: Saį¹į¹himattÄ bhikkhÅ« sikkhaį¹ paccakkhÄya hÄ«nÄyÄvattiį¹su:
āItās too hard, Blessed One! Itās just too hard!ā āsudukkaraį¹ bhagavÄ, sudukkaraį¹ bhagavÄāti. And sixty monks were freed from defilements by not grasping. Saį¹į¹himattÄnaį¹ bhikkhÅ«naį¹ anupÄdÄya Äsavehi cittÄni vimucciį¹sÅ«ti.
