With Jīvaka Jīvakasutta
At one time the Buddha was staying near RÄjagaha in JÄ«vakaās Mango Grove. Ekaį¹ samayaį¹ bhagavÄ rÄjagahe viharati jÄ«vakambavane. Then JÄ«vaka KomÄrabhacca went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him, Atha kho jÄ«vako komÄrabhacco yena bhagavÄ tenupasaį¹ kami; upasaį¹ kamitvÄ bhagavantaį¹ abhivÄdetvÄ ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho jÄ«vako komÄrabhacco bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: āSir, how is a lay follower defined?ā ākittÄvatÄ nu kho, bhante, upÄsako hotÄ«āti?
āJÄ«vaka, when youāve gone for refuge to the Buddha, the teaching, and the Saį¹ gha, āYato kho, jÄ«vaka, buddhaį¹ saraį¹aį¹ gato hoti, dhammaį¹ saraį¹aį¹ gato hoti, saį¹ ghaį¹ saraį¹aį¹ gato hoti; youāre considered to be a lay follower.ā ettÄvatÄ kho, jÄ«vaka, upÄsako hotÄ«āti.
āBut how is an ethical lay follower defined?ā āKittÄvatÄ pana, bhante, upÄsako sÄ«lavÄ hotÄ«āti?
āWhen a lay follower doesnāt kill living creatures, steal, commit sexual misconduct, lie, or consume beer, wine, and liquor intoxicants, āYato kho, jÄ«vaka, upÄsako pÄį¹ÄtipÄtÄ paį¹ivirato hoti ā¦pe⦠surÄmerayamajjapamÄdaį¹į¹hÄnÄ paį¹ivirato hoti; theyāre considered to be an ethical lay follower.ā ettÄvatÄ kho, jÄ«vaka, upÄsako sÄ«lavÄ hotÄ«āti.
āBut how do we define a lay follower who is practicing to benefit themselves, not others?ā āKittÄvatÄ pana, bhante, upÄsako attahitÄya paį¹ipanno hoti, no parahitÄyÄāti?
āA lay follower is accomplished in faith, but doesnāt encourage others to do the same. Theyāre accomplished in ethical conduct ⦠theyāre accomplished in generosity ⦠they like to see the mendicants ⦠they like to hear the true teaching ⦠they memorize the teachings ⦠they examine the meaning ⦠āYato kho, jÄ«vaka, upÄsako attanÄva saddhÄsampanno hoti, no paraį¹ saddhÄsampadÄya samÄdapeti ā¦pe⦠Understanding the meaning and the teaching, they practice in line with the teaching, but they donāt encourage others to do the same. attanÄva atthamaƱƱÄya dhammamaƱƱÄya dhammÄnudhammappaį¹ipanno hoti, no paraį¹ dhammÄnudhammappaį¹ipattiyÄ samÄdapeti. Thatās how we define a lay follower who is practicing to benefit themselves, not others.ā EttÄvatÄ kho, jÄ«vaka, upÄsako attahitÄya paį¹ipanno hoti, no parahitÄyÄāti.
āBut how do we define a lay follower who is practicing to benefit both themselves and others?ā āKittÄvatÄ pana, bhante, upÄsako attahitÄya ca paį¹ipanno hoti parahitÄya cÄāti?
āA lay follower is accomplished in faith and encourages others to do the same. āYato kho, jÄ«vaka, upÄsako attanÄ ca saddhÄsampanno hoti, paraƱca saddhÄsampadÄya samÄdapeti; Theyāre accomplished in ethical conduct and encourage others to do the same. attanÄ ca sÄ«lasampanno hoti, paraƱca sÄ«lasampadÄya samÄdapeti; Theyāre accomplished in generosity and encourage others to do the same. attanÄ ca cÄgasampanno hoti, paraƱca cÄgasampadÄya samÄdapeti; They like to see the mendicants and encourage others to do the same. attanÄ ca bhikkhÅ«naį¹ dassanakÄmo hoti, paraƱca bhikkhÅ«naį¹ dassane samÄdapeti; They like to hear the true teaching and encourage others to do the same. attanÄ ca saddhammaį¹ sotukÄmo hoti, paraƱca saddhammassavane samÄdapeti; They readily memorize the teachings theyāve heard and encourage others to do the same. attanÄ ca sutÄnaį¹ dhammÄnaį¹ dhÄraį¹ajÄtiko hoti, paraƱca dhammadhÄraį¹Äya samÄdapeti; They examine the meaning of the teachings theyāve memorized and encourage others to do the same. attanÄ ca sutÄnaį¹ dhammÄnaį¹ atthÅ«paparikkhitÄ hoti, paraƱca atthÅ«paparikkhÄya samÄdapeti; Understanding the meaning and the teaching, they practice in line with the teaching and they encourage others to do the same. attanÄ ca atthamaƱƱÄya dhammamaƱƱÄya dhammÄnudhammappaį¹ipanno hoti, paraƱca dhammÄnudhammappaį¹ipattiyÄ samÄdapeti.
