With Gotamī Gotamīsutta

At one time the Buddha was staying in the land of the Sakyans, near Kapilavatthu in the Banyan Tree Monastery. Ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā sakkesu viharati kapilavatthusmiṁ nigrodhārāme. Then Mahāpajāpati GotamÄ« went up to the Buddha, bowed, stood to one side, and said to him: Atha kho mahāpajāpatÄ« gotamÄ« yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ aį¹­į¹­hāsi. Ekamantaṁ į¹­hitā kho mahāpajāpatÄ« gotamÄ« bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:

ā€œSir, please let ladies gain the going forth from the lay life to homelessness in the teaching and training proclaimed by the Realized One.ā€ ā€œsādhu, bhante, labheyya mātugāmo tathāgatappavedite dhammavinaye agārasmā anagāriyaṁ pabbajjanā€ti.

ā€œEnough, GotamÄ«. ā€œAlaṁ, gotami. Don’t endorse the going forth for ladies from the lay life to homelessness in the teaching and training proclaimed by the Realized One.ā€ Mā te rucci mātugāmassa tathāgatappavedite dhammavinaye agārasmā anagāriyaṁ pabbajjÄā€ti.

For a second time … Dutiyampi kho mahāpajāpatÄ« gotamÄ« bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: ā€œsādhu, bhante, labheyya mātugāmo tathāgatappavedite dhammavinaye agārasmā anagāriyaṁ pabbajjanā€ti. ā€œAlaṁ, gotami. Mā te rucci mātugāmassa tathāgatappavedite dhammavinaye agārasmā anagāriyaṁ pabbajjÄā€ti.

For a third time, Mahāpajāpati Gotamī said to the Buddha: Tatiyampi kho mahāpajāpatī gotamī bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:

ā€œSir, please let ladies gain the going forth from the lay life to homelessness in the teaching and training proclaimed by the Realized One.ā€ ā€œsādhu, bhante, labheyya mātugāmo tathāgatappavedite dhammavinaye agārasmā anagāriyaṁ pabbajjanā€ti.

ā€œEnough, GotamÄ«. ā€œAlaṁ, gotami. Don’t endorse the going forth for ladies from the lay life to homelessness in the teaching and training proclaimed by the Realized One.ā€ Mā te rucci mātugāmassa tathāgatappavedite dhammavinaye agārasmā anagāriyaṁ pabbajjÄā€ti.

Then Mahāpajāpati GotamÄ« thought, ā€œThe Buddha does not permit ladies to go forth.ā€ Miserable and sad, weeping, with a tearful face, she bowed, and respectfully circled the Buddha, keeping him on her right, before leaving. Atha kho mahāpajāpatÄ« gotamÄ« ā€œna bhagavā anujānāti mātugāmassa tathāgatappavedite dhammavinaye agārasmā anagāriyaṁ pabbajjanā€ti dukkhÄ« dummanā assumukhÄ« rudamānā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā padakkhiṇaṁ katvā pakkāmi.

When the Buddha had stayed in Kapilavatthu as long as he pleased, he set out for VesālÄ«. Atha kho bhagavā kapilavatthusmiṁ yathābhirantaṁ viharitvā yena vesālÄ« tena cārikaṁ pakkāmi. Traveling stage by stage, he arrived at VesālÄ«, Anupubbena cārikaṁ caramāno yena vesālÄ« tadavasari. where he stayed at the Great Wood, in the hall with the peaked roof. Tatra sudaṁ bhagavā vesāliyaṁ viharati mahāvane kūṭāgārasālāyaṁ. Then Mahāpajāpati GotamÄ« had her hair shaved, and dressed in ocher robes. Together with several Sakyan ladies she set out for VesālÄ«. Atha kho mahāpajāpatÄ« gotamÄ« kese chedāpetvā kāsāyāni vatthāni acchādetvā sambahulāhi sākiyānÄ«hi saddhiṁ yena vesālÄ« tena pakkāmi. Traveling stage by stage, she arrived at VesālÄ« and went to the Great Wood, the hall with the peaked roof. Anupubbena yena vesālÄ« mahāvanaṁ kūṭāgārasālā tenupasaį¹…kami. Then Mahāpajāpati GotamÄ« stood crying outside the gate, her feet swollen, her limbs covered with dust, miserable and sad, with tearful face. Atha kho mahāpajāpatÄ« gotamÄ« sÅ«nehi pādehi rajokiṇṇena gattena dukkhÄ« dummanā assumukhÄ« rudamānā bahidvārakoį¹­į¹­hake aį¹­į¹­hāsi.

Venerable Ānanda saw her standing there, Addasā kho āyasmā ānando mahāpajāpatiṁ gotamiṁ sÅ«nehi pādehi rajokiṇṇena gattena dukkhiṁ dummanaṁ assumukhiṁ rudamānaṁ bahidvārakoį¹­į¹­hake į¹­hitaṁ. and said to her, Disvāna mahāpajāpatiṁ gotamiṁ etadavoca: ā€œGotamÄ«, why do you stand crying outside the gate, your feet swollen, your limbs covered with dust, miserable and sad, with tearful face?ā€ ā€œkiṁ nu tvaṁ, gotami, sÅ«nehi pādehi rajokiṇṇena gattena dukkhÄ« dummanā assumukhÄ« rudamānā bahidvārakoį¹­į¹­hake į¹­hitÄā€ti?

ā€œHonorable Ānanda, it’s because the Buddha does not permit ladies to go forth in the teaching and training proclaimed by the Realized One.ā€ ā€œTathā hi pana, bhante ānanda, na bhagavā anujānāti mātugāmassa tathāgatappavedite dhammavinaye agārasmā anagāriyaṁ pabbajjanā€ti.

ā€œWell then, GotamÄ«, wait here an hour while I ask the Buddha to grant the going forth for ladies.ā€ ā€œTena hi tvaṁ, gotami, muhuttaṁ idheva tāva hohi, yāvāhaṁ bhagavantaṁ yācāmi mātugāmassa tathāgatappavedite dhammavinaye agārasmā anagāriyaṁ pabbajjanā€ti.

Then Venerable Ānanda went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him: Atha kho āyasmā ānando yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho āyasmā ānando bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:

ā€œSir, Mahāpajāpati GotamÄ« is standing crying outside the gate, her feet swollen, her limbs covered with dust, miserable and sad, with tearful face. ā€œesā, bhante, mahāpajāpatÄ« gotamÄ« sÅ«nehi pādehi rajokiṇṇena gattena dukkhÄ« dummanā assumukhÄ« rudamānā bahidvārakoį¹­į¹­hake į¹­hitā: She says that it’s because the Buddha does not permit ladies to go forth. ā€˜na bhagavā anujānāti mātugāmassa tathāgatappavedite dhammavinaye agārasmā anagāriyaṁ pabbajjan’ti. ā€œEnough, Ānanda. ā€œAlaṁ, ānanda. Don’t endorse the going forth for ladies from the lay life to homelessness in the teaching and training proclaimed by the Realized One.ā€ Mā te rucci mātugāmassa tathāgatappavedite dhammavinaye agārasmā anagāriyaṁ pabbajjÄā€ti.

For a second time … Dutiyampi kho …pe…

For a third time, Ānanda said to the Buddha: tatiyampi kho āyasmā ānando bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:

ā€œSir, please let ladies gain the going forth from the lay life to homelessness in the teaching and training proclaimed by the Realized One.ā€ ā€œsādhu, bhante, labheyya mātugāmo tathāgatappavedite dhammavinaye agārasmā anagāriyaṁ pabbajjanā€ti.

ā€œEnough, Ānanda. ā€œAlaṁ, ānanda. Don’t endorse the going forth for ladies from the lay life to homelessness in the teaching and training proclaimed by the Realized One.ā€ Mā te rucci mātugāmassa tathāgatappavedite dhammavinaye agārasmā anagāriyaṁ pabbajjÄā€ti.

Then Venerable Ānanda thought, Atha kho āyasmato ānandassa etadahosi: ā€œThe Buddha does not permit ladies to go forth. ā€œna bhagavā anujānāti mātugāmassa tathāgatappavedite dhammavinaye agārasmā anagāriyaṁ pabbajjaṁ. Why don’t I try another approach?ā€ YannÅ«nāhaṁ aƱƱenapi pariyāyena bhagavantaṁ yāceyyaṁ mātugāmassa tathāgatappavedite dhammavinaye agārasmā anagāriyaṁ pabbajjanā€ti.

Then Venerable Ānanda said to the Buddha, Atha kho āyasmā ānando bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: ā€œSir, is a lady able to realize the fruits of stream-entry, once-return, non-return, and perfection once she has gone forth?ā€ ā€œbhabbo nu kho, bhante, mātugāmo tathāgatappavedite dhammavinaye agārasmā anagāriyaṁ pabbajitvā sotāpattiphalaṁ vā sakadāgāmiphalaṁ vā anāgāmiphalaṁ vā arahattaphalaṁ vā sacchikātunā€ti?

ā€œShe is able, Ānanda.ā€ ā€œBhabbo, ānanda, mātugāmo tathāgatappavedite dhammavinaye agārasmā anagāriyaṁ pabbajitvā sotāpattiphalampi sakadāgāmiphalampi anāgāmiphalampi arahattaphalampi sacchikātunā€ti.

ā€œIf a lady is able to realize the fruits of stream-entry, once-return, non-return, and perfection once she has gone forth. ā€œSace, bhante, bhabbo mātugāmo tathāgatappavedite dhammavinaye agārasmā anagāriyaṁ pabbajitvā sotāpattiphalampi …pe… arahattaphalampi sacchikātuṁ; Sir, Mahāpajāpati has been very helpful to the Buddha. As his aunt, she raised him, nurtured him, and gave him her milk. bahukārā, bhante, mahāpajāpatÄ« gotamÄ« bhagavato mātucchā āpādikā posikā khÄ«rassa dāyikā; When the Buddha’s birth mother passed away, she nurtured him at her own breast. bhagavantaṁ janettiyā kālaį¹…katāya thaƱƱaṁ pāyesi. Sir, please let ladies gain the going forth from the lay life to homelessness in the teaching and training proclaimed by the Realized One.ā€ Sādhu, bhante, labheyya mātugāmo tathāgatappavedite dhammavinaye agārasmā anagāriyaṁ pabbajjanā€ti.

ā€œÄ€nanda, if Mahāpajāpati GotamÄ« accepts these eight principles of respect, that will be her ordination. ā€œSace, ānanda, mahāpajāpatÄ« gotamÄ« aį¹­į¹­ha garudhamme paį¹­iggaṇhāti, sāvassā hotu upasampadā—

A nun, even if she has been ordained for a hundred years, should bow down to a monk who was ordained that very day. She should rise up for him, greet him with cupped palms, and observe proper etiquette toward him. Vassasatūpasampannāya bhikkhuniyā tadahūpasampannassa bhikkhuno abhivādanaṁ paccuṭṭhānaṁ añjalikammaṁ sāmīcikammaṁ kattabbaṁ. This principle should be honored, respected, esteemed, and venerated, and not transgressed so long as life lasts. Ayampi dhammo sakkatvā garuṁ katvā mānetvā pūjetvā yāvajīvaṁ anatikkamanīyo.

A nun should not commence the rainy season residence in a monastery without monks. Na bhikkhuniyā abhikkhuke āvāse vassaṁ upagantabbaṁ. This principle should be honored, respected, esteemed, and venerated, and not transgressed so long as life lasts. Ayampi dhammo sakkatvā garuṁ katvā mānetvā pūjetvā yāvajīvaṁ anatikkamanīyo.

Each fortnight the nuns should expect two things from the community of monks: Anvaįøįøhamāsaṁ bhikkhuniyā bhikkhusaį¹…ghato dve dhammā paccāsÄ«sitabbā—the date of the sabbath, and visiting for advice. uposathapucchakaƱca, ovādÅ«pasaį¹…kamanaƱca. This principle should be honored, respected, esteemed, and venerated, and not transgressed so long as life lasts. Ayampi dhammo sakkatvā garuṁ katvā mānetvā pÅ«jetvā yāvajÄ«vaṁ anatikkamanÄ«yo.

After completing the rainy season residence the nuns should invite admonition from the communities of both monks and nuns in regard to anything that was Vassaṁvuį¹­į¹­hāya bhikkhuniyā ubhatosaį¹…ghe tÄ«hi į¹­hānehi pavāretabbaṁ—seen, heard, or suspected. diį¹­į¹­hena vā sutena vā parisaį¹…kāya vā. This principle should be honored, respected, esteemed, and venerated, and not transgressed so long as life lasts. Ayampi dhammo sakkatvā garuṁ katvā mānetvā pÅ«jetvā yāvajÄ«vaṁ anatikkamanÄ«yo.

A nun who has committed a grave offense should undergo penance in the communities of both monks and nuns for a fortnight. Garudhammaṁ ajjhāpannāya bhikkhuniyā ubhatosaį¹…ghe pakkhamānattaṁ caritabbaṁ. This principle should be honored, respected, esteemed, and venerated, and not transgressed so long as life lasts. Ayampi dhammo sakkatvā garuṁ katvā mānetvā pÅ«jetvā yāvajÄ«vaṁ anatikkamanÄ«yo.

A trainee nun who has trained in the six rules for two years should seek ordination from the communities of both monks and nuns. Dve vassāni chasu dhammesu sikkhitasikkhāya sikkhamānāya ubhatosaį¹…ghe upasampadā pariyesitabbā. This principle should be honored, respected, esteemed, and venerated, and not transgressed so long as life lasts. Ayampi dhammo sakkatvā garuṁ katvā mānetvā pÅ«jetvā yāvajÄ«vaṁ anatikkamanÄ«yo.

A nun should not abuse or insult a monk in any way. Na kenaci pariyāyena bhikkhuniyā bhikkhu akkositabbo paribhāsitabbo. This principle should be honored, respected, esteemed, and venerated, and not transgressed so long as life lasts. Ayampi dhammo sakkatvā garuṁ katvā mānetvā pūjetvā yāvajīvaṁ anatikkamanīyo.

From this day forth it is forbidden for nuns to criticize monks, but it is not forbidden for monks to criticize nuns. Ajjatagge ovaṭo bhikkhunīnaṁ bhikkhūsu vacanapatho, anovaṭo bhikkhūnaṁ bhikkhunīsu vacanapatho. This principle should be honored, respected, esteemed, and venerated, and not transgressed so long as life lasts. Ayampi dhammo sakkatvā garuṁ katvā mānetvā pūjetvā yāvajīvaṁ anatikkamanīyo.

If Mahāpajāpati GotamÄ« accepts these eight principles of respect, that will be her ordination.ā€ Sace, ānanda, mahāpajāpatÄ« gotamÄ« ime aį¹­į¹­ha garudhamme paį¹­iggaṇhāti, sāvassā hotu upasampadÄā€ti.

Then Ānanda, having learned these eight principles of respect from the Buddha himself, went to Mahāpajāpati GotamÄ« and said: Atha kho āyasmā ānando bhagavato santike ime aį¹­į¹­ha garudhamme uggahetvā yena mahāpajāpatÄ« gotamÄ« tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā mahāpajāpatiṁ gotamiṁ etadavoca:

ā€œGotamÄ«, if you accept eight principles of respect, that will be your ordination. ā€œSace kho tvaṁ, gotami, aį¹­į¹­ha garudhamme paį¹­iggaṇheyyāsi, sāva te bhavissati upasampadā—

ā€œÄ€nanda, suppose there was a woman or man who was young, youthful, and fond of adornments, and had bathed their head. After getting a garland of lotuses, jasmine, or liana flowers, they would take them in both hands and place them on the crown of the head. ā€œSeyyathāpi, bhante ānanda, itthÄ« vā puriso vā daharo yuvā maį¹‡įøanakajātiko sÄ«saṁnhāto uppalamālaṁ vā vassikamālaṁ vā adhimuttakamālaṁ vā labhitvā ubhohi hatthehi paį¹­iggahetvā uttamaį¹…ge sirasmiṁ patiį¹­į¹­hāpeyya; In the same way, sir, I accept these eight principles of respect as not to be transgressed so long as life lasts.ā€ evamevaṁ kho ahaṁ, bhante ānanda, ime aį¹­į¹­ha garudhamme paį¹­iggaṇhāmi yāvajÄ«vaṁ anatikkamanÄ«yeā€ti.

Then Venerable Ānanda went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to the Buddha: Atha kho āyasmā ānando yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho āyasmā ānando bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:

ā€œSir, Mahāpajāpati GotamÄ« has accepted the eight principles of respect as not to be transgressed so long as life lasts.ā€ ā€œpaį¹­iggahitā, bhante, mahāpajāpatiyā gotamiyā aį¹­į¹­ha garudhammā yāvajÄ«vaṁ anatikkamanÄ«yÄā€ti.

ā€œÄ€nanda, if ladies had not gained the going forth from the lay life to homelessness in the teaching and training proclaimed by the Realized One, the spiritual life would have lasted long. The true teaching would have remained for a thousand years. ā€œSace, ānanda, nālabhissa mātugāmo tathāgatappavedite dhammavinaye agārasmā anagāriyaṁ pabbajjaṁ, ciraį¹­į¹­hitikaṁ, ānanda, brahmacariyaṁ abhavissa, vassasahassameva saddhammo tiį¹­į¹­heyya. But since they have gained the going forth, now the spiritual life will not last long. Yato ca kho, ānanda, mātugāmo tathāgatappavedite dhammavinaye agārasmā anagāriyaṁ pabbajito, na dāni, ānanda, brahmacariyaṁ ciraį¹­į¹­hitikaṁ bhavissati. The true teaching will remain only five hundred years. PaƱceva dāni, ānanda, vassasatāni saddhammo į¹­hassati.

It’s like those families with many women and few men. They’re easy prey for bandits and grain-jar thieves. Seyyathāpi, ānanda, yāni kānici kulāni bahutthikāni appapurisakāni, tāni suppadhaṁsiyāni honti corehi kumbhatthenakehi; In the same way, the spiritual life does not last long in a teaching and training where ladies gain the going forth. evamevaṁ kho, ānanda, yasmiṁ dhammavinaye labhati mātugāmo agārasmā anagāriyaṁ pabbajjaṁ, na taṁ brahmacariyaṁ ciraį¹­į¹­hitikaṁ hoti.

It’s like a field full of rice. Once the disease called ā€˜white bones’ attacks, it doesn’t last long. Seyyathāpi, ānanda, sampanne sālikkhette setaį¹­į¹­hikā nāma rogajāti nipatati, evaṁ taṁ sālikkhettaṁ na ciraį¹­į¹­hitikaṁ hoti; In the same way, the spiritual life does not last long in a teaching and training where ladies gain the going forth. evamevaṁ kho, ānanda, yasmiṁ dhammavinaye labhati mātugāmo agārasmā anagāriyaṁ pabbajjaṁ, na taṁ brahmacariyaṁ ciraį¹­į¹­hitikaṁ hoti.

It’s like a field full of sugar cane. Once the disease called ā€˜red rot’ attacks, it doesn’t last long. Seyyathāpi, ānanda, sampanne ucchukkhette maƱjiį¹­į¹­hikā nāma rogajāti nipatati, evaṁ taṁ ucchukkhettaṁ na ciraį¹­į¹­hitikaṁ hoti; In the same way, the spiritual life does not last long in a teaching and training where ladies gain the going forth. evamevaṁ kho, ānanda, yasmiṁ dhammavinaye labhati mātugāmo agārasmā anagāriyaṁ pabbajjaṁ, na taṁ brahmacariyaṁ ciraį¹­į¹­hitikaṁ hoti.

As a man might build a dyke around a large lake as a precaution against the water overflowing, Seyyathāpi, ānanda, puriso mahato taḷākassa paį¹­ikacceva āḷiṁ bandheyya yāvadeva udakassa anatikkamanāya; in the same way as a precaution I’ve prescribed the eight principles of respect as not to be transgressed so long as life lasts.ā€ evamevaṁ kho, ānanda, mayā paį¹­ikacceva bhikkhunÄ«naṁ aį¹­į¹­ha garudhammā paƱƱattā yāvajÄ«vaṁ anatikkamanÄ«yÄā€ti.
