An Adviser for Nuns OvÄdasutta
At one time the Buddha was staying near VesÄlÄ«, at the Great Wood, in the hall with the peaked roof. Ekaį¹ samayaį¹ bhagavÄ vesÄliyaį¹ viharati mahÄvane kÅ«į¹ÄgÄrasÄlÄyaį¹. Then Venerable Änanda went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to the Buddha: Atha kho ÄyasmÄ Änando yena bhagavÄ tenupasaį¹ kami; upasaį¹ kamitvÄ bhagavantaį¹ abhivÄdetvÄ ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho ÄyasmÄ Änando bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca:
āSir, how many qualities should a monk have to be deemed an adviser for nuns?ā ākatihi nu kho, bhante, dhammehi samannÄgato bhikkhu bhikkhunovÄdako sammannitabboāti?
āÄnanda, a monk with eight qualities may be deemed an adviser for nuns. āAį¹į¹hahi kho, Änanda, dhammehi samannÄgato bhikkhu bhikkhunovÄdako sammannitabbo. What eight? Katamehi aį¹į¹hahi?
Firstly, a monk is ethical, restrained in the monastic code, conducting themselves well and resorting for alms in suitable places. Seeing danger in the slightest fault, they keep the rules theyāve undertaken. IdhÄnanda, bhikkhu sÄ«lavÄ hoti ā¦pe⦠samÄdÄya sikkhati sikkhÄpadesu;
Theyāre learned, remembering and keeping what theyāve learned. These teachings are good in the beginning, good in the middle, and good in the end, meaningful and well-phrased, describing a spiritual practice thatās totally full and pure. They are very learned in such teachings, remembering them, reciting them, mentally scrutinizing them, and penetrating them theoretically. bahussuto hoti ā¦pe⦠diį¹į¹hiyÄ suppaį¹ividdhÄ;
Both monastic codes have been passed down to them in detail, well analyzed, well mastered, well evaluated in both the rules and accompanying material. ubhayÄni kho panassa pÄtimokkhÄni vitthÄrena svÄgatÄni honti suvibhattÄni suppavattÄ«ni suvinicchitÄni suttaso anubyaƱjanaso;
Theyāre a good speaker who enunciates well. Their voice is polished, clear, articulate, and expresses the meaning. kalyÄį¹avÄco hoti kalyÄį¹avÄkkaraį¹o, poriyÄ vÄcÄya samannÄgato vissaį¹į¹hÄya anelagaįø·Äya atthassa viƱƱÄpaniyÄ;
Theyāre able to educate, encourage, fire up, and inspire the community of nuns. paį¹ibalo hoti bhikkhunisaį¹ ghassa dhammiyÄ kathÄya sandassetuį¹ samÄdapetuį¹ samuttejetuį¹ sampahaį¹setuį¹;
Theyāre likable and agreeable to most of the nuns. yebhuyyena bhikkhunÄ«naį¹ piyo hoti manÄpo;
They have never previously sexually harassed any woman wearing the ocher robe who has gone forth in the Buddhaās name. na kho panetaį¹ bhagavantaį¹ uddissa pabbajitÄya kÄsÄyavatthavasanÄya garudhammaį¹ ajjhÄpannapubbo hoti;
They have been ordained for twenty years or more. vÄ«sativasso vÄ hoti atirekavÄ«sativasso vÄ.
A monk with these eight qualities may be deemed an adviser for nuns.ā Imehi kho, Änanda, aį¹į¹hahi dhammehi samannÄgato bhikkhu bhikkhunovÄdako sammannitabboāti.
