Nanda Nandasutta
āMendicants, you could rightly call Nanda āGentlemanā, āākulaputtoāti, bhikkhave, nandaį¹ sammÄ vadamÄno vadeyya. āstrongā, āBalavÄāti, bhikkhave, nandaį¹ sammÄ vadamÄno vadeyya. ālovelyā, āPÄsÄdikoāti, bhikkhave, nandaį¹ sammÄ vadamÄno vadeyya. and ālustfulā. āTibbarÄgoāti, bhikkhave, nandaį¹ sammÄ vadamÄno vadeyya. How could he live the full and pure spiritual life unless he guards the sense doors, eats in moderation, is dedicated to wakefulness, and has mindfulness and situational awareness? KimaƱƱatra, bhikkhave, nando indriyesu guttadvÄro, bhojane mattaññū, jÄgariyaį¹ anuyutto, satisampajaƱƱena samannÄgato, yehi nando sakkoti paripuį¹į¹aį¹ parisuddhaį¹ brahmacariyaį¹ carituį¹.
This is how Nanda guards the sense doors. Tatridaį¹, bhikkhave, nandassa indriyesu guttadvÄratÄya hoti. Nanda reflects rationally on the food he eats: Idha, bhikkhave, nando paį¹isaį¹ khÄ yoniso ÄhÄraį¹ ÄhÄreti: āNot for fun, indulgence, adornment, or decoration, but only to sustain this body, to avoid harm, and to support spiritual practice.
