Fears and Enmities (2nd) Dutiyaverasutta

ā€œMendicants, when a noble disciple has quelled five fears and enmities, and possesses the four factors of stream-entry, they may, if they wish, declare of themselves: ā€œYato kho, bhikkhave, ariyasāvakassa paƱca bhayāni verāni vÅ«pasantāni honti, catÅ«hi ca sotāpattiyaį¹…gehi samannāgato hoti, so ākaį¹…khamāno attanāva attānaṁ byākareyya: ā€˜I’ve finished with rebirth in hell, the animal realm, and the ghost realm. I’ve finished with all places of loss, bad places, the underworld. I am a stream-enterer! I’m not liable to be reborn in the underworld, and am assured, destined for awakening.’ ā€˜khīṇanirayomhi khīṇatiracchānayoni khīṇapettivisayo khīṇāpāyaduggativinipāto; sotāpannohamasmi avinipātadhammo niyato sambodhiparāyaṇoā€™ā€ti.

What are the five fears and enmities they have quelled? Katamāni paƱca bhayāni verāni vÅ«pasantāni honti? Anyone who kills living creatures brims with fear and enmity both in this life and in lives to come, and experiences mental pain and sadness. Anyone who refrains from killing living creatures does not brim with fear and enmity either in this life or in lives to come, and doesn’t experience mental pain and sadness. Yaṁ, bhikkhave, pāṇātipātÄ« pāṇātipātapaccayā diį¹­į¹­hadhammikampi bhayaṁ veraṁ pasavati, samparāyikampi bhayaṁ veraṁ pasavati, cetasikampi dukkhaṁ domanassaṁ paį¹­isaṁvedeti, pāṇātipātā paį¹­ivirato …pe… So that fear and enmity is quelled for anyone who refrains from killing living creatures. evaṁ taṁ bhayaṁ veraṁ vÅ«pasantaṁ hoti.

Anyone who steals … commits sexual misconduct … lies … Yaṁ, bhikkhave, adinnādāyÄ« …pe… Anyone who consumes beer, wine, and liquor intoxicants brims with fear and enmity both in this life and in lives to come, and experiences mental pain and sadness. Anyone who refrains from consuming beer, wine, and liquor intoxicants does not brim with fear and enmity either in this life or in lives to come, and doesn’t experience mental pain and sadness. surāmerayamajjapamādaį¹­į¹­hāyÄ« surāmerayamajjapamādaį¹­į¹­hānapaccayā diį¹­į¹­hadhammikampi bhayaṁ veraṁ pasavati, samparāyikampi bhayaṁ veraṁ pasavati, cetasikampi dukkhaṁ domanassaṁ paį¹­isaṁvedeti, surāmerayamajjapamādaį¹­į¹­hānā paį¹­ivirato neva diį¹­į¹­hadhammikampi bhayaṁ veraṁ pasavati, na samparāyikampi bhayaṁ veraṁ pasavati, na cetasikampi dukkhaṁ domanassaṁ paį¹­isaṁvedeti. So that fear and enmity is quelled for anyone who refrains from consuming beer, wine, and liquor intoxicants. Surāmerayamajjapamādaį¹­į¹­hānā paį¹­iviratassa evaṁ taṁ bhayaṁ veraṁ vÅ«pasantaṁ hoti. These are the five fears and enmities they have quelled. Imāni paƱca bhayāni verāni vÅ«pasantāni honti.

What are the four factors of stream-entry that they possess? Katamehi catÅ«hi sotāpattiyaį¹…gehi samannāgato hoti? When a noble disciple has experiential confidence in the Buddha … Idha, bhikkhave, ariyasāvako buddhe aveccappasādena samannāgato hoti: ā€˜itipi so bhagavā …pe… satthā devamanussānaṁ buddho bhagavā’ti. the teaching … Dhamme …pe… the Saį¹…gha … saį¹…ghe … And a noble disciple’s ethical conduct is loved by the noble ones, unbroken, impeccable, spotless, and unmarred, liberating, praised by sensible people, not mistaken, and leading to immersion. ariyakantehi sÄ«lehi samannāgato hoti akhaį¹‡įøehi acchiddehi asabalehi akammāsehi bhujissehi viƱƱuppasatthehi aparāmaį¹­į¹­hehi samādhisaṁvattanikehi. These are the four factors of stream-entry that they possess. Imehi catÅ«hi sotāpattiyaį¹…gehi samannāgato hoti.
