Shackles of the Heart Cetasovinibandhasutta
āMendicants, there are these five shackles of the heart. āPaƱcime, bhikkhave, cetasovinibandhÄ. What five? Katame paƱca? Firstly, a mendicant isnāt free of greed, desire, fondness, thirst, passion, and craving for sensual pleasures. ⦠Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu kÄmesu avÄ«tarÄgo hoti ā¦pe⦠These are the five shackles of the heart. ime kho, bhikkhave, paƱca cetasovinibandhÄ.
To give up these five shackles of the heart you should develop the four right efforts. Imesaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, paƱcannaį¹ cetasovinibandhÄnaį¹ pahÄnÄya cattÄro sammappadhÄnÄ bhÄvetabbÄ. What four? Katame cattÄro? Itās when a mendicant generates enthusiasm, tries, makes an effort, exerts the mind, and strives so that bad, unskillful qualities donāt arise. ⦠Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu anuppannÄnaį¹ pÄpakÄnaį¹ akusalÄnaį¹ dhammÄnaį¹ anuppÄdÄya chandaį¹ janeti vÄyamati vÄ«riyaį¹ Ärabhati cittaį¹ paggaį¹hÄti padahati; so that unskillful qualities are given up ⦠uppannÄnaį¹ pÄpakÄnaį¹ akusalÄnaį¹ dhammÄnaį¹ pahÄnÄya ⦠so that skillful qualities arise ⦠anuppannÄnaį¹ kusalÄnaį¹ dhammÄnaį¹ uppÄdÄya ⦠They generate enthusiasm, try, make an effort, exert the mind, and strive so that skillful qualities that have arisen remain, are not lost, but increase, mature, and are completed by development. uppannÄnaį¹ kusalÄnaį¹ dhammÄnaį¹ į¹hitiyÄ asammosÄya bhiyyobhÄvÄya vepullÄya bhÄvanÄya pÄripÅ«riyÄ chandaį¹ janeti vÄyamati vÄ«riyaį¹ Ärabhati cittaį¹ paggaį¹hÄti padahati.
