The Fish Kingās Conduct MaccharÄjacariya
āThen again when I was āPunÄparaį¹ yadÄ homi, a fish king in a great lake, maccharÄjÄ mahÄsare; in the heat of the sun Uį¹he sÅ«riyasantÄpe, the water in the lake evaporated. sare udaka khÄ«yatha.
Then crows and vultures, Tato kÄkÄ ca gijjhÄ ca, herons, hawks, and falcons, kaį¹ kÄ kulalasenakÄ; perched near the fish Bhakkhayanti divÄrattiį¹, and devoured them day and night. macche upanisÄ«diya.
There I had the following thought, Evaį¹ cintesahaį¹ tattha, being harassed with my relatives: saha ƱÄtÄ«hi pīḷito; āBy what means āKena nu kho upÄyena, can I free my relatives from this suffering?ā ƱÄtÄ« dukkhÄ pamocayeā.
Considering the value of the Dhamma, VicintayitvÄ dhammatthaį¹, I saw the truth as a support. saccaį¹ addasa passayaį¹; Standing in the truth, Sacce į¹hatvÄ pamocesiį¹, I freed my relatives from that holocaust. ƱÄtÄ«naį¹ taį¹ atikkhayaį¹.
Recollecting the true Dhamma, AnussaritvÄ sataį¹ dhammaį¹, considered the ultimate goal, paramatthaį¹ vicintayaį¹; I made a declaration of truth AkÄsiį¹ saccakiriyaį¹, that would last eternally in the world. yaį¹ loke dhuvasassataį¹.
āSo long as I can recall myself, āYato sarÄmi attÄnaį¹, since I became aware, yato pattosmi viƱƱutaį¹; I do not recall deliberately NÄbhijÄnÄmi saƱcicca, harming even a single living creature. ekapÄį¹ampi hiį¹sitaį¹.
By this declaration of truth, Etena saccavajjena, may Pajjuna rain down! pajjunno abhivassatu; Thunder forth, Pajjuna! Abhitthanaya pajjunna, Disperse the trove of the crow! nidhiį¹ kÄkassa nÄsaya; Subject the crow to sorrow, KÄkaį¹ sokÄya randhehi, and free the fish from sorrow!ā macche sokÄ pamocayaā.
