Mortifying Tapanīyasutta

This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard. Vuttañhetaṁ bhagavatā vuttamarahatāti me sutaṁ:

ā€œThese two things, mendicants, are mortifying. ā€œDveme, bhikkhave, dhammā tapanÄ«yā. What two? Katame dve? It’s when someone hasn’t done good and skillful things that keep them safe, but has done bad things, violence and sin. Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco akatakalyāṇo hoti, akatakusalo, akatabhÄ«ruttāṇo, katapāpo, kataluddo, katakibbiso. Thinking, ā€˜I haven’t done good things’, they’re mortified. Thinking, ā€˜I have done bad things’, they’re mortified. So ā€˜akataṁ me kalyāṇan’tipi tappati, ā€˜kataṁ me pāpan’tipi tappati. These are the two things that are mortifying.ā€ Ime kho, bhikkhave, dve dhammā tapanÄ«yāā€ti.

The Buddha spoke this matter. Etamatthaṁ bhagavā avoca. On this it is said: Tatthetaṁ iti vuccati:

ā€œHaving done bad things ā€œKāyaduccaritaṁ katvā, by way of body, vacÄ«duccaritāni ca; speech, and mind, Manoduccaritaṁ katvā, and whatever else is corrupt; yaƱcaƱƱaṁ dosasaƱhitaṁ.

not having done good deeds, Akatvā kusalaṁ kammaṁ, and having done many bad, katvānākusalaṁ bahuṁ; when their body breaks up, that witless person Kāyassa bhedā duppaƱƱo, is reborn in hell.ā€ nirayaṁ sopapajjatÄ«ā€ti.

This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard. Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatā, iti me sutanti.

Tatiyaṁ.
