Inner Stains AntarÄmalasutta
This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard. VuttaƱhetaį¹ bhagavatÄ vuttamarahatÄti me sutaį¹:
āMendicants, there are these three inner stains, inner foes, inner enemies, inner killers, and inner adversaries. āTayome, bhikkhave, antarÄmalÄ antarÄamittÄ antarÄsapattÄ antarÄvadhakÄ antarÄpaccatthikÄ. What three? Katame tayo? Greed, Lobho, bhikkhave, antarÄmalo antarÄamitto antarÄsapatto antarÄvadhako antarÄpaccatthiko. hate, Doso, bhikkhave, antarÄmalo antarÄamitto antarÄsapatto antarÄvadhako antarÄpaccatthiko. and delusion. Moho, bhikkhave, antarÄmalo antarÄamitto antarÄsapatto antarÄvadhako antarÄpaccatthiko. These three are inner stains, inner foes, inner enemies, inner killers, and inner adversaries.ā Ime kho, bhikkhave, tayo antarÄmalÄ antarÄamittÄ antarÄsapattÄ antarÄvadhakÄ antarÄpaccatthikÄāti.
The Buddha spoke this matter. Etamatthaį¹ bhagavÄ avoca. On this it is said: Tatthetaį¹ iti vuccati:
āGreed creates harm; āAnatthajanano lobho, greed upsets the mind. lobho cittappakopano; That person doesnāt recognize Bhayamantarato jÄtaį¹, the danger that arises within. taį¹ jano nÄvabujjhati.
A greedy person doesnāt know the good. Luddho atthaį¹ na jÄnÄti, A greedy person doesnāt see the truth. luddho dhammaį¹ na passati; When a person is beset by greed, Andhatamaį¹ tadÄ hoti, only blind darkness is left. yaį¹ lobho sahate naraį¹.
Those who have given up greed, Yo ca lobhaį¹ pahantvÄna, donāt get greedy even when provoked. lobhaneyye na lubbhati; Greed falls off them Lobho pahÄ«yate tamhÄ, like a drop from a lotus-leaf. udabindÅ«va pokkharÄ.
Hate creates harm; Anatthajanano doso, hate upsets the mind. doso cittappakopano; That person doesnāt recognize Bhayamantarato jÄtaį¹, the danger that arises within. taį¹ jano nÄvabujjhati.
A hateful person doesnāt know the good. Duį¹į¹ho atthaį¹ na jÄnÄti, A hateful person doesnāt see the truth. duį¹į¹ho dhammaį¹ na passati; When a person is beset by hate, Andhatamaį¹ tadÄ hoti, only blind darkness is left. yaį¹ doso sahate naraį¹.
Those who have given up hate, Yo ca dosaį¹ pahantvÄna, donāt get angry even when provoked. dosaneyye na dussati; Hate falls off them Doso pahÄ«yate tamhÄ, like a ripe palmyra fruit from its stem. tÄlapakkaį¹va bandhanÄ.
Delusion creates harm; Anatthajanano moho, delusion upsets the mind. moho cittappakopano; That person doesnāt recognize Bhayamantarato jÄtaį¹, the danger that arises within. taį¹ jano nÄvabujjhati.
A deluded person doesnāt know the good. Mūḷho atthaį¹ na jÄnÄti, A deluded person doesnāt see the truth. mūḷho dhammaį¹ na passati; When a person is beset by delusion, Andhatamaį¹ tadÄ hoti, only blind darkness is left. yaį¹ moho sahate naraį¹.
Those who have given up delusion, Yo ca mohaį¹ pahantvÄna, donāt get deluded even when provoked. mohaneyye na muyhati; They banish all delusion, Mohaį¹ vihanti so sabbaį¹, as the rising sun the dark.ā Ädiccovudayaį¹ tamanāti.
This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard. Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatÄ, iti me sutanti.
