The Discourse on Love Mettasutta
Those who are skilled in the meaning of scripture Karaṇīyamatthakusalena, should practice like this so as to realize the state of peace. Yanta santaṁ padaṁ abhisamecca; Let them be capable and upright, very upright, Sakko ujū ca suhujū ca, easy to speak to, gentle and humble; Sūvaco cassa mudu anatimānī.
content and unburdensome, Santussako ca subharo ca, unbusied, living lightly, Appakicco ca sallahukavutti; alert, with senses calmed, Santindriyo ca nipako ca, courteous, not fawning on families. Appagabbho kulesvananugiddho.
Let them not do the slightest thing Na ca khuddamācare kiñci, that others who are wise would blame. Yena viññū pare upavadeyyuṁ; May they be happy and safe! Sukhino va khemino hontu, May all beings be happy! Sabbasattā bhavantu sukhitattā.
Whatever living creatures there are Ye keci pāṇabhūtatthi, with not a one left out—Tasā vā thāvarā vanavasesā; frail or firm, long or large, Dīghā vā ye va mahantā, medium, small, tiny or round, Majjhimā rassakā aṇukathūlā.
seen or unseen, Diṭṭhā vā ye va adiṭṭhā, living far or near, Ye va dūre vasanti avidūre; those who have been born <j>and those about to be born—Bhūtā va sambhavesī va, may all beings be happy! Sabbasattā bhavantu sukhitattā.
Let none deceive another, Na paro paraṁ nikubbetha, nor look down on anyone anywhere. Nātimaññetha katthaci na kañci; Though provoked or aggrieved, Byārosanā paṭighasañña, let them not wish pain on each other. Nāññamaññassa dukkhamiccheyya.
Even as a mother would protect with her life Mātā yathā niyaṁ puttam her child, her only child, Āyusā ekaputtamanurakkhe; so too for all creatures Evampi sabbabhūtesu, unfold a boundless heart. Mānasaṁ bhāvaye aparimāṇaṁ.
With love for the whole world, Mettañca sabbalokasmi, unfold a boundless heart: Mānasaṁ bhāvaye aparimāṇaṁ; above, below, all round, Uddhaṁ adho ca tiriyañca, unconstricted, without enmity or foe. Asambādhaṁ averamasapattaṁ.
When standing, walking, sitting, Tiṭṭhaṁ caraṁ nisinno va, or lying down while yet unweary, Sayāno yāvatāssa vitamiddho; keep this ever in mind; Etaṁ satiṁ adhiṭṭheyya, for this, they say, is a divine meditation in this life. Brahmametaṁ vihāramidhamāhu.
Avoiding harmful views, Diṭṭhiñca anupaggamma, virtuous, accomplished in insight, Sīlavā dassanena sampanno; with desire for sensual pleasures dispelled, Kāmesu vinaya gedhaṁ, they never return to a womb again. Na hi jātuggabbhaseyya punaretīti.
Mettasuttaṁ.
