A Splinter Sakalikasutta
So I have heard. Evaį¹ me sutaį¹āAt one time the Buddha was staying near RÄjagaha in the Maddakucchi deer park. ekaį¹ samayaį¹ bhagavÄ rÄjagahe viharati maddakucchismiį¹ migadÄye.
Now at that time the Buddhaās foot had been cut by a wooden splinter. Tena kho pana samayena bhagavato pÄdo sakalikÄya khato hoti. The Buddha was stricken by harrowing pains; physical feelings that were painful, sharp, severe, acute, unpleasant, and disagreeable. BhusÄ sudaį¹ bhagavato vedanÄ vattanti sÄrÄ«rikÄ vedanÄ dukkhÄ tibbÄ kharÄ kaį¹ukÄ asÄtÄ amanÄpÄ; But he endured unbothered, with mindfulness and situational awareness. tÄ sudaį¹ bhagavÄ sato sampajÄno adhivÄseti avihaƱƱamÄno. And then he spread out his outer robe folded in four and laid down in the lionās postureāon the right side, placing one foot on top of the otherāmindful and aware. Atha kho bhagavÄ catugguį¹aį¹ saį¹ ghÄį¹iį¹ paƱƱÄpetvÄ dakkhiį¹ena passena sÄ«haseyyaį¹ kappeti pÄde pÄdaį¹ accÄdhÄya sato sampajÄno.
Then, late at night, seven hundred glorious deities of the host of a hundred felicities, lighting up the entire Maddakucchi, went up to the Buddha, bowed, and stood to one side. Atha kho sattasatÄ satullapakÄyikÄ devatÄyo abhikkantÄya rattiyÄ abhikkantavaį¹į¹Ä kevalakappaį¹ maddakucchiį¹ obhÄsetvÄ yena bhagavÄ tenupasaį¹ kamiį¹su; upasaį¹ kamitvÄ bhagavantaį¹ abhivÄdetvÄ ekamantaį¹ aį¹į¹haį¹su.
Standing to one side, one deity expressed this heartfelt sentiment in the Buddhaās presence: Ekamantaį¹ į¹hitÄ kho ekÄ devatÄ bhagavato santike imaį¹ udÄnaį¹ udÄnesi: āThe ascetic Gotama is such an elephant, sir! ānÄgo vata, bho, samaį¹o gotamo; And as an elephant, he endures painful physical feelings that have come upāsharp, severe, acute, unpleasant, and disagreeableāunbothered, with mindfulness and situational awareness.ā nÄgavatÄ ca samuppannÄ sÄrÄ«rikÄ vedanÄ dukkhÄ tibbÄ kharÄ kaį¹ukÄ asÄtÄ amanÄpÄ sato sampajÄno adhivÄseti avihaƱƱamÄnoāti.
Then another deity expressed this heartfelt sentiment in the Buddhaās presence: Atha kho aparÄ devatÄ bhagavato santike imaį¹ udÄnaį¹ udÄnesi: āThe ascetic Gotama is such a lion, sir! āsÄ«ho vata, bho, samaį¹o gotamo; And as a lion, he endures painful physical feelings ⦠unbothered.ā sÄ«havatÄ ca samuppannÄ sÄrÄ«rikÄ vedanÄ dukkhÄ tibbÄ kharÄ kaį¹ukÄ asÄtÄ amanÄpÄ sato sampajÄno adhivÄseti avihaƱƱamÄnoāti.
Then another deity expressed this heartfelt sentiment in the Buddhaās presence: Atha kho aparÄ devatÄ bhagavato santike imaį¹ udÄnaį¹ udÄnesi: āThe ascetic Gotama is such a thoroughbred, sir! āÄjÄnÄ«yo vata, bho, samaį¹o gotamo; And as a thoroughbred, he endures painful physical feelings ⦠unbothered.ā ÄjÄnÄ«yavatÄ ca samuppannÄ sÄrÄ«rikÄ vedanÄ dukkhÄ tibbÄ kharÄ kaį¹ukÄ asÄtÄ amanÄpÄ sato sampajÄno adhivÄseti avihaƱƱamÄnoāti.
Then another deity expressed this heartfelt sentiment in the Buddhaās presence: Atha kho aparÄ devatÄ bhagavato santike imaį¹ udÄnaį¹ udÄnesi: āThe ascetic Gotama is such a boss bull, sir! ānisabho vata, bho, samaį¹o gotamo; And as a boss bull, he endures painful physical feelings ⦠unbothered.ā nisabhavatÄ ca samuppannÄ sÄrÄ«rikÄ vedanÄ dukkhÄ tibbÄ kharÄ kaį¹ukÄ asÄtÄ amanÄpÄ sato sampajÄno adhivÄseti avihaƱƱamÄnoāti.
Then another deity expressed this heartfelt sentiment in the Buddhaās presence: Atha kho aparÄ devatÄ bhagavato santike imaį¹ udÄnaį¹ udÄnesi: āThe ascetic Gotama is such a behemoth, sir! ādhorayho vata, bho, samaį¹o gotamo; And as a behemoth, he endures painful physical feelings ⦠unbothered.ā dhorayhavatÄ ca samuppannÄ sÄrÄ«rikÄ vedanÄ dukkhÄ tibbÄ kharÄ kaį¹ukÄ asÄtÄ amanÄpÄ sato sampajÄno adhivÄseti avihaƱƱamÄnoāti.
Then another deity expressed this heartfelt sentiment in the Buddhaās presence: Atha kho aparÄ devatÄ bhagavato santike imaį¹ udÄnaį¹ udÄnesi: āThe ascetic Gotama is truly tamed, sir! ādanto vata, bho, samaį¹o gotamo; And as someone tamed, he endures painful physical feelings ⦠unbothered.ā dantavatÄ ca samuppannÄ sÄrÄ«rikÄ vedanÄ dukkhÄ tibbÄ kharÄ kaį¹ukÄ asÄtÄ amanÄpÄ sato sampajÄno adhivÄseti avihaƱƱamÄnoāti.
Then another deity expressed this heartfelt sentiment in the Buddhaās presence: Atha kho aparÄ devatÄ bhagavato santike imaį¹ udÄnaį¹ udÄnesi: āSee, his immersion is so well developed, and his mind is so well freedānot leaning forward or pulling back, and not held in place by forceful suppression. āpassa samÄdhiį¹ subhÄvitaį¹ cittaƱca suvimuttaį¹, na cÄbhinataį¹ na cÄpanataį¹ na ca sasaį¹ khÄraniggayhavÄritagataį¹. If anyone imagines that they can overcome such an elephant of a man, a lion of a man, a thoroughbred of a man, a boss bull of a man, a behemoth of a man, a tamed manāwhat is that but a failure to see?ā Yo evarÅ«paį¹ purisanÄgaį¹ purisasÄ«haį¹ purisaÄjÄnÄ«yaį¹ purisanisabhaį¹ purisadhorayhaį¹ purisadantaį¹ atikkamitabbaį¹ maƱƱeyya kimaƱƱatra adassanÄāti.
āLearned in the five branches of Vedic lore, āPaƱcavedÄ sataį¹ samaį¹, brahmins practice fervent mortification for a full century. TapassÄ« brÄhmaį¹Ä caraį¹; But their minds are not properly freed, CittaƱca nesaį¹ na sammÄ vimuttaį¹, for those of base character donāt cross to the far shore. HÄ«nattharÅ«pÄ na pÄraį¹ gamÄ te.
Seized by craving, <j>attached to precept and observance, Taį¹hÄdhipannÄ vatasÄ«labaddhÄ, they practice rough and fervent mortification for a hundred years. LÅ«khaį¹ tapaį¹ vassasataį¹ carantÄ; But their minds are not properly freed, CittaƱca nesaį¹ na sammÄ vimuttaį¹, for those of base character donāt cross to the far shore. HÄ«nattharÅ«pÄ na pÄraį¹ gamÄ te.
Someone whoās fond of conceit canāt be tamed, Na mÄnakÄmassa damo idhatthi, and someone without immersion canāt be a sage. Na monamatthi asamÄhitassa; Living negligent alone in the wilderness, Eko araƱƱe viharaį¹ pamatto, they canāt pass beyond Deathās dominion.ā Na maccudheyyassa tareyya pÄranāti.
āHaving given up conceit, serene within oneself, āMÄnaį¹ pahÄya susamÄhitatto, with a good heart, everywhere free; Sucetaso sabbadhi vippamutto; living diligent alone in the wilderness, Eko araƱƱe viharamappamatto, they pass beyond Deathās dominion.ā Sa maccudheyyassa tareyya pÄranāti.
