Homage to the Buddha Buddhavandanāsutta

Near SāvatthÄ« in Jeta’s Grove. Sāvatthiyaṁ jetavane.

Now at that time the Buddha had gone into retreat for the day’s meditation. Tena kho pana samayena bhagavā divāvihāragato hoti paį¹isallÄ«no. Then Sakka, lord of gods, and the divinity Sahampati approached the Buddha and stationed themselves one by each door-post. Atha kho sakko ca devānamindo brahmā ca sahampati yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kamiṁsu; upasaį¹…kamitvā paccekaṁ dvārabāhaṁ nissāya aį¹į¹haṁsu.

Then Sakka spoke this verse in the Buddha’s presence: Atha kho sakko devānamindo bhagavato santike imaṁ gāthaṁ abhāsi:

ā€œRise, hero! Victor in battle, with burden put down, ā€œUį¹į¹hehi vÄ«ra vijitasaį¹…gāma, wander the world free of debt. Pannabhāra anaṇa vicara loke; Your mind is fully liberated, CittaƱca te suvimuttaṁ, like the moon on the fifteenth night.ā€ Cando yathā pannarasāya rattinā€ti.

ā€œLord of gods, that’s not how to pay homage to the Realized Ones. ā€œNa kho, devānaminda, tathāgatā evaṁ vanditabbā. This is how it should be done: EvaƱca kho, devānaminda, tathāgatā vanditabbā:

ā€˜Rise, hero! Victor in battle, caravan leader, ā€˜Uį¹į¹hehi vÄ«ra vijitasaį¹…gāma, wander the world free of debt. Satthavāha anaṇa vicara loke; Let the Blessed One teach the Dhamma! Desassu bhagavā dhammaṁ, There will be those who understand!ā€™ā€ AƱƱātāro bhavissantÄ«ā€™ā€ti.
