Homage to the Buddha BuddhavandanÄsutta
Near SÄvatthÄ« in Jetaās Grove. SÄvatthiyaį¹ jetavane.
Now at that time the Buddha had gone into retreat for the dayās meditation. Tena kho pana samayena bhagavÄ divÄvihÄragato hoti paį¹isallÄ«no. Then Sakka, lord of gods, and the divinity Sahampati approached the Buddha and stationed themselves one by each door-post. Atha kho sakko ca devÄnamindo brahmÄ ca sahampati yena bhagavÄ tenupasaį¹ kamiį¹su; upasaį¹ kamitvÄ paccekaį¹ dvÄrabÄhaį¹ nissÄya aį¹į¹haį¹su.
Then Sakka spoke this verse in the Buddhaās presence: Atha kho sakko devÄnamindo bhagavato santike imaį¹ gÄthaį¹ abhÄsi:
āRise, hero! Victor in battle, with burden put down, āUį¹į¹hehi vÄ«ra vijitasaį¹ gÄma, wander the world free of debt. PannabhÄra anaį¹a vicara loke; Your mind is fully liberated, CittaƱca te suvimuttaį¹, like the moon on the fifteenth night.ā Cando yathÄ pannarasÄya rattināti.
āLord of gods, thatās not how to pay homage to the Realized Ones. āNa kho, devÄnaminda, tathÄgatÄ evaį¹ vanditabbÄ. This is how it should be done: EvaƱca kho, devÄnaminda, tathÄgatÄ vanditabbÄ:
āRise, hero! Victor in battle, caravan leader, āUį¹į¹hehi vÄ«ra vijitasaį¹ gÄma, wander the world free of debt. SatthavÄha anaį¹a vicara loke; Let the Blessed One teach the Dhamma! Desassu bhagavÄ dhammaį¹, There will be those who understand!āā AƱƱÄtÄro bhavissantÄ«āāti.
