Gotama Gotamasutta
āMendicants, before my awakeningāwhen I was still unawakened but intent on awakeningāI thought: āPubbeva me, bhikkhave, sambodhÄ anabhisambuddhassa bodhisattasseva sato etadahosi: āAlas, this world has fallen into trouble. Itās born, grows old, dies, passes away, and is reborn, ākicchaį¹ vatÄyaį¹ loko Äpanno jÄyati ca jÄ«yati ca mÄ«yati ca cavati ca upapajjati ca. yet it doesnāt understand how to escape from this suffering, from old age and death. Atha ca panimassa dukkhassa nissaraį¹aį¹ nappajÄnÄti jarÄmaraį¹assa. Oh, when will an escape be found from this suffering, from old age and death?ā KudÄssu nÄma imassa dukkhassa nissaraį¹aį¹ paƱƱÄyissati jarÄmaraį¹assÄāti?
Then it occurred to me: Tassa mayhaį¹, bhikkhave, etadahosi: āWhen what exists is there old age and death? What is a requirement for old age and death?ā ākimhi nu kho sati jarÄmaraį¹aį¹ hoti, kiį¹paccayÄ jarÄmaraį¹anāti? Then, through rational application of mind, I penetrated with wisdom: Tassa mayhaį¹, bhikkhave, yoniso manasikÄrÄ ahu paƱƱÄya abhisamayo: āWhen rebirth exists thereās old age and death. Rebirth is a requirement for old age and death.ā ājÄtiyÄ kho sati jarÄmaraį¹aį¹ hoti, jÄtipaccayÄ jarÄmaraį¹anāti.
Then it occurred to me: Tassa mayhaį¹, bhikkhave, etadahosi: āWhen what exists is there rebirth? ⦠ākimhi nu kho sati jÄti hoti ā¦pe⦠continued existence ⦠bhavo ⦠grasping ⦠upÄdÄnaṠ⦠craving ⦠taį¹hÄ ā¦ feeling ⦠vedanÄ ā¦ contact ⦠phasso ⦠the six sense fields ⦠saįø·ÄyatanaṠ⦠name and form ⦠nÄmarÅ«paṠ⦠consciousness ⦠viƱƱÄį¹aṠ⦠āWhen what exists are there choices? What is a requirement for choices?ā saį¹ khÄrÄ honti, kiį¹paccayÄ saį¹ khÄrÄāti? Then, through rational application of mind, I penetrated with wisdom: Tassa mayhaį¹, bhikkhave, yoniso manasikÄrÄ ahu paƱƱÄya abhisamayo: āWhen ignorance exists there are choices. Ignorance is a requirement for choices.ā āavijjÄya kho sati saį¹ khÄrÄ honti, avijjÄpaccayÄ saį¹ khÄrÄāti.
And so, ignorance is a requirement for choices. Iti hidaį¹ avijjÄpaccayÄ saį¹ khÄrÄ;
Choices are a requirement for consciousness. ⦠saį¹ khÄrapaccayÄ viƱƱÄį¹aį¹ ā¦pe⦠That is how this entire mass of suffering originates. evametassa kevalassa dukkhakkhandhassa samudayo hoti. āOrigination, origination.ā Such was the vision, knowledge, wisdom, realization, and light that arose in me regarding teachings not learned before from another. āSamudayo, samudayoāti kho me, bhikkhave, pubbe ananussutesu dhammesu cakkhuį¹ udapÄdi, ƱÄį¹aį¹ udapÄdi, paĆ±Ć±Ä udapÄdi, vijjÄ udapÄdi, Äloko udapÄdi.
Then it occurred to me: Tassa mayhaį¹, bhikkhave, etadahosi: āWhen what doesnāt exist is there no old age and death? When what ceases do old age and death cease?ā ākimhi nu kho asati jarÄmaraį¹aį¹ na hoti, kissa nirodhÄ jarÄmaraį¹anirodhoāti? Then, through rational application of mind, I penetrated with wisdom: Tassa mayhaį¹, bhikkhave, yoniso manasikÄrÄ ahu paƱƱÄya abhisamayo: āWhen rebirth doesnāt exist thereās no old age and death. When rebirth ceases, old age and death cease.ā ājÄtiyÄ kho asati jarÄmaraį¹aį¹ na hoti, jÄtinirodhÄ jarÄmaraį¹anirodhoāti.
