Vital Conditions Upanisasutta

At Sāvatthī. Sāvatthiyaṁ viharati.

ā€œMendicants, I say that the ending of defilements is for one who knows and sees, not for one who does not know or see. ā€œJānato ahaṁ, bhikkhave, passato āsavānaṁ khayaṁ vadāmi, no ajānato no apassato. For one who knows and sees what? KiƱca, bhikkhave, jānato kiṁ passato āsavānaṁ khayo hoti? ā€˜Such is form, such is the origin of form, such is the ending of form. Iti rÅ«paṁ iti rÅ«passa samudayo iti rÅ«passa atthaį¹…gamo, Such is feeling … iti vedanā …pe… Such is perception … iti saƱƱā … Such are choices … iti saį¹…khārā … Such is consciousness, such is the origin of consciousness, such is the ending of consciousness.’ iti viññāṇaṁ iti viññāṇassa samudayo iti viññāṇassa atthaį¹…gamoti. The ending of the defilements is for one who knows and sees this. Evaṁ kho, bhikkhave, jānato evaṁ passato āsavānaṁ khayo hoti.

I say that this knowledge of ending has a vital condition, it doesn’t lack a vital condition. Yampissa taṁ, bhikkhave, khayasmiṁ khaye ñāṇaṁ, tampi saupanisaṁ vadāmi, no anupanisaṁ. And what is it? Kā ca, bhikkhave, khaye ñāṇassa upanisā? You should say: ā€˜Freedom.’ ā€˜Vimuttī’tissa vacanÄ«yaṁ. I say that freedom has a vital condition, it doesn’t lack a vital condition. Vimuttimpāhaṁ, bhikkhave, saupanisaṁ vadāmi, no anupanisaṁ. And what is it? Kā ca, bhikkhave, vimuttiyā upanisā? You should say: ā€˜Dispassion.’ ā€˜Virāgo’tissa vacanÄ«yaṁ. I say that dispassion has a vital condition. Virāgampāhaṁ, bhikkhave, saupanisaṁ vadāmi, no anupanisaṁ. And what is it? Kā ca, bhikkhave, virāgassa upanisā? You should say: ā€˜Disillusionment.’ ā€˜Nibbidā’tissa vacanÄ«yaṁ. I say that disillusionment has a vital condition. Nibbidampāhaṁ, bhikkhave, saupanisaṁ vadāmi, no anupanisaṁ. And what is it? Kā ca, bhikkhave, nibbidāya upanisā? You should say: ā€˜Truly knowing and seeing.’ ā€˜YathābhÅ«tañāṇadassanan’tissa vacanÄ«yaṁ. I say that truly knowing and seeing has a vital condition. YathābhÅ«tañāṇadassanampāhaṁ, bhikkhave, saupanisaṁ vadāmi, no anupanisaṁ. And what is it? Kā ca, bhikkhave, yathābhÅ«tañāṇadassanassa upanisā? You should say: ā€˜Immersion.’ ā€˜Samādhī’tissa vacanÄ«yaṁ. I say that immersion has a vital condition. Samādhimpāhaṁ, bhikkhave, saupanisaṁ vadāmi, no anupanisaṁ.

And what is it? Kā ca, bhikkhave, samādhissa upanisā? You should say: ā€˜Bliss.’ ā€˜Sukhan’tissa vacanÄ«yaṁ. I say that bliss has a vital condition. Sukhampāhaṁ, bhikkhave, saupanisaṁ vadāmi, no anupanisaṁ. And what is it? Kā ca, bhikkhave, sukhassa upanisā? You should say: ā€˜Tranquility.’ ā€˜Passaddhī’tissa vacanÄ«yaṁ. I say that tranquility has a vital condition. Passaddhimpāhaṁ, bhikkhave, saupanisaṁ vadāmi, no anupanisaṁ. And what is it? Kā ca, bhikkhave, passaddhiyā upanisā? You should say: ā€˜Rapture.’ ā€˜PÄ«tī’tissa vacanÄ«yaṁ. I say that rapture has a vital condition. PÄ«timpāhaṁ, bhikkhave, saupanisaṁ vadāmi, no anupanisaṁ. And what is it? Kā ca, bhikkhave, pÄ«tiyā upanisā? You should say: ā€˜Joy.’ ā€˜Pāmojjan’tissa vacanÄ«yaṁ. I say that joy has a vital condition. Pāmojjampāhaṁ, bhikkhave, saupanisaṁ vadāmi, no anupanisaṁ. And what is it? Kā ca, bhikkhave, pāmojjassa upanisā? You should say: ā€˜Faith.’ ā€˜Saddhā’tissa vacanÄ«yaṁ. I say that faith has a vital condition. Saddhampāhaṁ, bhikkhave, saupanisaṁ vadāmi, no anupanisaṁ.

And what is it? Kā ca, bhikkhave, saddhāya upanisā? You should say: ā€˜Suffering.’ ā€˜Dukkhan’tissa vacanÄ«yaṁ. I say that suffering has a vital condition. Dukkhampāhaṁ, bhikkhave, saupanisaṁ vadāmi, no anupanisaṁ. And what is it? Kā ca, bhikkhave, dukkhassa upanisā? You should say: ā€˜Rebirth.’ ā€˜Jātī’tissa vacanÄ«yaṁ. I say that rebirth has a vital condition. Jātimpāhaṁ, bhikkhave, saupanisaṁ vadāmi, no anupanisaṁ. And what is it? Kā ca, bhikkhave, jātiyā upanisā? You should say: ā€˜Continued existence.’ ā€˜Bhavo’tissa vacanÄ«yaṁ. I say that continued existence has a vital condition. Bhavampāhaṁ, bhikkhave, saupanisaṁ vadāmi, no anupanisaṁ. And what is it? Kā ca, bhikkhave, bhavassa upanisā? You should say: ā€˜Grasping.’ ā€˜Upādānan’tissa vacanÄ«yaṁ. I say that grasping has a vital condition. Upādānampāhaṁ, bhikkhave, saupanisaṁ vadāmi, no anupanisaṁ. And what is it? Kā ca, bhikkhave, upādānassa upanisā? You should say: ā€˜Craving.’ ā€˜Taṇhā’tissa vacanÄ«yaṁ. I say that craving has a vital condition. Taṇhampāhaṁ, bhikkhave, saupanisaṁ vadāmi, no anupanisaṁ.

And what is it? Kā ca, bhikkhave, taṇhāya upanisā? You should say: ā€˜Feeling.’ … ā€˜Vedanā’tissa vacanÄ«yaṁ …pe… You should say: ā€˜Contact.’ … ā€˜phasso’tissa vacanÄ«yaṁ … You should say: ā€˜The six sense fields.’ … ā€˜saḷāyatanan’tissa vacanÄ«yaṁ … You should say: ā€˜Name and form.’ … ā€˜nāmarÅ«pan’tissa vacanÄ«yaṁ … You should say: ā€˜Consciousness.’ … ā€˜viññāṇan’tissa vacanÄ«yaṁ … You should say: ā€˜Choices.’ … ā€˜saį¹…khārā’tissa vacanÄ«yaṁ. I say that choices have a vital condition, they don’t lack a vital condition. Saį¹…khārepāhaṁ, bhikkhave, saupanise vadāmi, no anupanise. And what is the vital condition for choices? Kā ca, bhikkhave, saį¹…khārānaṁ upanisā? You should say: ā€˜Ignorance.’ ā€˜Avijjā’tissa vacanÄ«yaṁ.

So, mendicants: ignorance is the vital condition for choices. Iti kho, bhikkhave, avijjÅ«panisā saį¹…khārā, Choices are the vital condition for consciousness. saį¹…khārÅ«panisaṁ viññāṇaṁ, Consciousness is the vital condition for name and form. viññāṇūpanisaṁ nāmarÅ«paṁ, Name and form are the vital conditions for the six sense fields. nāmarÅ«pÅ«panisaṁ saḷāyatanaṁ, The six sense fields are the vital conditions for contact. saḷāyatanÅ«paniso phasso, Contact is the vital condition for feeling. phassÅ«panisā vedanā, Feeling is the vital condition for craving. vedanÅ«panisā taṇhā, Craving is the vital condition for grasping. taṇhÅ«panisaṁ upādānaṁ, Grasping is the vital condition for continued existence. upādānÅ«paniso bhavo, Continued existence is the vital condition for rebirth. bhavÅ«panisā jāti, Rebirth is the vital condition for suffering. jātÅ«panisaṁ dukkhaṁ, Suffering is the vital condition for faith. dukkhÅ«panisā saddhā, Faith is the vital condition for joy. saddhÅ«panisaṁ pāmojjaṁ, Joy is the vital condition for rapture. pāmojjÅ«panisā pÄ«ti, Rapture is the vital condition for tranquility. pÄ«tÅ«panisā passaddhi, Tranquility is the vital condition for bliss. passaddhÅ«panisaṁ sukhaṁ, Bliss is the vital condition for immersion. sukhÅ«paniso samādhi, Immersion is the vital condition for truly knowing and seeing. samādhÅ«panisaṁ yathābhÅ«tañāṇadassanaṁ, Truly knowing and seeing is the vital condition for disillusionment. yathābhÅ«tañāṇadassanÅ«panisā nibbidā, Disillusionment is the vital condition for dispassion. nibbidÅ«paniso virāgo, Dispassion is the vital condition for freedom. virāgÅ«panisā vimutti, Freedom is the vital condition for the knowledge of ending. vimuttÅ«panisaṁ khaye ñāṇaṁ.

It’s like when the heavens rain heavily on a mountain top, and the water flows downhill to fill the hollows, crevices, and creeks. As they become full, they fill up the pools. The pools fill up the lakes, the lakes fill up the streams, and the streams fill up the rivers. And as the rivers become full, they fill up the ocean. Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, uparipabbate thullaphusitake deve vassante taṁ udakaṁ yathāninnaṁ pavattamānaṁ pabbatakandarapadarasākhā paripÅ«reti. PabbatakandarapadarasākhāparipÅ«rā kusobbhe paripÅ«renti. Kusobbhā paripÅ«rā mahāsobbhe paripÅ«renti. Mahāsobbhā paripÅ«rā kunnadiyo paripÅ«renti. Kunnadiyo paripÅ«rā mahānadiyo paripÅ«renti. Mahānadiyo paripÅ«rā mahāsamuddaṁ paripÅ«renti.

In the same way, ignorance is the vital condition for choices. … Freedom is the vital condition for the knowledge of ending.ā€ Evameva kho, bhikkhave, avijjÅ«panisā saį¹…khārā, saį¹…khārÅ«panisaṁ viññāṇaṁ, viññāṇūpanisaṁ nāmarÅ«paṁ, nāmarÅ«pÅ«panisaṁ saḷāyatanaṁ, saḷāyatanÅ«paniso phasso, phassÅ«panisā vedanā, vedanÅ«panisā taṇhā, taṇhÅ«panisaṁ upādānaṁ, upādānÅ«paniso bhavo, bhavÅ«panisā jāti, jātÅ«panisaṁ dukkhaṁ, dukkhÅ«panisā saddhā, saddhÅ«panisaṁ pāmojjaṁ, pāmojjÅ«panisā pÄ«ti, pÄ«tÅ«panisā passaddhi, passaddhÅ«panisaṁ sukhaṁ, sukhÅ«paniso samādhi, samādhÅ«panisaṁ yathābhÅ«tañāṇadassanaṁ, yathābhÅ«tañāṇadassanÅ«panisā nibbidā, nibbidÅ«paniso virāgo, virāgÅ«panisā vimutti, vimuttÅ«panisaṁ khaye ñāṇanā€ti.
