Vital Conditions Upanisasutta
At SÄvatthÄ«. SÄvatthiyaį¹ viharati.
āMendicants, I say that the ending of defilements is for one who knows and sees, not for one who does not know or see. āJÄnato ahaį¹, bhikkhave, passato ÄsavÄnaį¹ khayaį¹ vadÄmi, no ajÄnato no apassato. For one who knows and sees what? KiƱca, bhikkhave, jÄnato kiį¹ passato ÄsavÄnaį¹ khayo hoti? āSuch is form, such is the origin of form, such is the ending of form. Iti rÅ«paį¹ iti rÅ«passa samudayo iti rÅ«passa atthaį¹ gamo, Such is feeling ⦠iti vedanÄ ā¦pe⦠Such is perception ⦠iti saĆ±Ć±Ä ā¦ Such are choices ⦠iti saį¹ khÄrÄ ā¦ Such is consciousness, such is the origin of consciousness, such is the ending of consciousness.ā iti viƱƱÄį¹aį¹ iti viƱƱÄį¹assa samudayo iti viƱƱÄį¹assa atthaį¹ gamoti. The ending of the defilements is for one who knows and sees this. Evaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, jÄnato evaį¹ passato ÄsavÄnaį¹ khayo hoti.
I say that this knowledge of ending has a vital condition, it doesnāt lack a vital condition. Yampissa taį¹, bhikkhave, khayasmiį¹ khaye ƱÄį¹aį¹, tampi saupanisaį¹ vadÄmi, no anupanisaį¹. And what is it? KÄ ca, bhikkhave, khaye ƱÄį¹assa upanisÄ? You should say: āFreedom.ā āVimuttÄ«ātissa vacanÄ«yaį¹. I say that freedom has a vital condition, it doesnāt lack a vital condition. VimuttimpÄhaį¹, bhikkhave, saupanisaį¹ vadÄmi, no anupanisaį¹. And what is it? KÄ ca, bhikkhave, vimuttiyÄ upanisÄ? You should say: āDispassion.ā āVirÄgoātissa vacanÄ«yaį¹. I say that dispassion has a vital condition. VirÄgampÄhaį¹, bhikkhave, saupanisaį¹ vadÄmi, no anupanisaį¹. And what is it? KÄ ca, bhikkhave, virÄgassa upanisÄ? You should say: āDisillusionment.ā āNibbidÄātissa vacanÄ«yaį¹. I say that disillusionment has a vital condition. NibbidampÄhaį¹, bhikkhave, saupanisaį¹ vadÄmi, no anupanisaį¹. And what is it? KÄ ca, bhikkhave, nibbidÄya upanisÄ? You should say: āTruly knowing and seeing.ā āYathÄbhÅ«taƱÄį¹adassananātissa vacanÄ«yaį¹. I say that truly knowing and seeing has a vital condition. YathÄbhÅ«taƱÄį¹adassanampÄhaį¹, bhikkhave, saupanisaį¹ vadÄmi, no anupanisaį¹. And what is it? KÄ ca, bhikkhave, yathÄbhÅ«taƱÄį¹adassanassa upanisÄ? You should say: āImmersion.ā āSamÄdhÄ«ātissa vacanÄ«yaį¹. I say that immersion has a vital condition. SamÄdhimpÄhaį¹, bhikkhave, saupanisaį¹ vadÄmi, no anupanisaį¹.
And what is it? KÄ ca, bhikkhave, samÄdhissa upanisÄ? You should say: āBliss.ā āSukhanātissa vacanÄ«yaį¹. I say that bliss has a vital condition. SukhampÄhaį¹, bhikkhave, saupanisaį¹ vadÄmi, no anupanisaį¹. And what is it? KÄ ca, bhikkhave, sukhassa upanisÄ? You should say: āTranquility.ā āPassaddhÄ«ātissa vacanÄ«yaį¹. I say that tranquility has a vital condition. PassaddhimpÄhaį¹, bhikkhave, saupanisaį¹ vadÄmi, no anupanisaį¹. And what is it? KÄ ca, bhikkhave, passaddhiyÄ upanisÄ? You should say: āRapture.ā āPÄ«tÄ«ātissa vacanÄ«yaį¹. I say that rapture has a vital condition. PÄ«timpÄhaį¹, bhikkhave, saupanisaį¹ vadÄmi, no anupanisaį¹. And what is it? KÄ ca, bhikkhave, pÄ«tiyÄ upanisÄ? You should say: āJoy.ā āPÄmojjanātissa vacanÄ«yaį¹. I say that joy has a vital condition. PÄmojjampÄhaį¹, bhikkhave, saupanisaį¹ vadÄmi, no anupanisaį¹. And what is it? KÄ ca, bhikkhave, pÄmojjassa upanisÄ? You should say: āFaith.ā āSaddhÄātissa vacanÄ«yaį¹. I say that faith has a vital condition. SaddhampÄhaį¹, bhikkhave, saupanisaį¹ vadÄmi, no anupanisaį¹.
And what is it? KÄ ca, bhikkhave, saddhÄya upanisÄ? You should say: āSuffering.ā āDukkhanātissa vacanÄ«yaį¹. I say that suffering has a vital condition. DukkhampÄhaį¹, bhikkhave, saupanisaį¹ vadÄmi, no anupanisaį¹. And what is it? KÄ ca, bhikkhave, dukkhassa upanisÄ? You should say: āRebirth.ā āJÄtÄ«ātissa vacanÄ«yaį¹. I say that rebirth has a vital condition. JÄtimpÄhaį¹, bhikkhave, saupanisaį¹ vadÄmi, no anupanisaį¹. And what is it? KÄ ca, bhikkhave, jÄtiyÄ upanisÄ? You should say: āContinued existence.ā āBhavoātissa vacanÄ«yaį¹. I say that continued existence has a vital condition. BhavampÄhaį¹, bhikkhave, saupanisaį¹ vadÄmi, no anupanisaį¹. And what is it? KÄ ca, bhikkhave, bhavassa upanisÄ? You should say: āGrasping.ā āUpÄdÄnanātissa vacanÄ«yaį¹. I say that grasping has a vital condition. UpÄdÄnampÄhaį¹, bhikkhave, saupanisaį¹ vadÄmi, no anupanisaį¹. And what is it? KÄ ca, bhikkhave, upÄdÄnassa upanisÄ? You should say: āCraving.ā āTaį¹hÄātissa vacanÄ«yaį¹. I say that craving has a vital condition. Taį¹hampÄhaį¹, bhikkhave, saupanisaį¹ vadÄmi, no anupanisaį¹.
And what is it? KÄ ca, bhikkhave, taį¹hÄya upanisÄ? You should say: āFeeling.ā ⦠āVedanÄātissa vacanÄ«yaį¹ ā¦pe⦠You should say: āContact.ā ⦠āphassoātissa vacanÄ«yaṠ⦠You should say: āThe six sense fields.ā ⦠āsaįø·Äyatananātissa vacanÄ«yaṠ⦠You should say: āName and form.ā ⦠ānÄmarÅ«panātissa vacanÄ«yaṠ⦠You should say: āConsciousness.ā ⦠āviƱƱÄį¹anātissa vacanÄ«yaṠ⦠You should say: āChoices.ā ⦠āsaį¹ khÄrÄātissa vacanÄ«yaį¹. I say that choices have a vital condition, they donāt lack a vital condition. Saį¹ khÄrepÄhaį¹, bhikkhave, saupanise vadÄmi, no anupanise. And what is the vital condition for choices? KÄ ca, bhikkhave, saį¹ khÄrÄnaį¹ upanisÄ? You should say: āIgnorance.ā āAvijjÄātissa vacanÄ«yaį¹.
So, mendicants: ignorance is the vital condition for choices. Iti kho, bhikkhave, avijjÅ«panisÄ saį¹ khÄrÄ, Choices are the vital condition for consciousness. saį¹ khÄrÅ«panisaį¹ viƱƱÄį¹aį¹, Consciousness is the vital condition for name and form. viƱƱÄį¹Å«panisaį¹ nÄmarÅ«paį¹, Name and form are the vital conditions for the six sense fields. nÄmarÅ«pÅ«panisaį¹ saįø·Äyatanaį¹, The six sense fields are the vital conditions for contact. saįø·ÄyatanÅ«paniso phasso, Contact is the vital condition for feeling. phassÅ«panisÄ vedanÄ, Feeling is the vital condition for craving. vedanÅ«panisÄ taį¹hÄ, Craving is the vital condition for grasping. taį¹hÅ«panisaį¹ upÄdÄnaį¹, Grasping is the vital condition for continued existence. upÄdÄnÅ«paniso bhavo, Continued existence is the vital condition for rebirth. bhavÅ«panisÄ jÄti, Rebirth is the vital condition for suffering. jÄtÅ«panisaį¹ dukkhaį¹, Suffering is the vital condition for faith. dukkhÅ«panisÄ saddhÄ, Faith is the vital condition for joy. saddhÅ«panisaį¹ pÄmojjaį¹, Joy is the vital condition for rapture. pÄmojjÅ«panisÄ pÄ«ti, Rapture is the vital condition for tranquility. pÄ«tÅ«panisÄ passaddhi, Tranquility is the vital condition for bliss. passaddhÅ«panisaį¹ sukhaį¹, Bliss is the vital condition for immersion. sukhÅ«paniso samÄdhi, Immersion is the vital condition for truly knowing and seeing. samÄdhÅ«panisaį¹ yathÄbhÅ«taƱÄį¹adassanaį¹, Truly knowing and seeing is the vital condition for disillusionment. yathÄbhÅ«taƱÄį¹adassanÅ«panisÄ nibbidÄ, Disillusionment is the vital condition for dispassion. nibbidÅ«paniso virÄgo, Dispassion is the vital condition for freedom. virÄgÅ«panisÄ vimutti, Freedom is the vital condition for the knowledge of ending. vimuttÅ«panisaį¹ khaye ƱÄį¹aį¹.
Itās like when the heavens rain heavily on a mountain top, and the water flows downhill to fill the hollows, crevices, and creeks. As they become full, they fill up the pools. The pools fill up the lakes, the lakes fill up the streams, and the streams fill up the rivers. And as the rivers become full, they fill up the ocean. SeyyathÄpi, bhikkhave, uparipabbate thullaphusitake deve vassante taį¹ udakaį¹ yathÄninnaį¹ pavattamÄnaį¹ pabbatakandarapadarasÄkhÄ paripÅ«reti. PabbatakandarapadarasÄkhÄparipÅ«rÄ kusobbhe paripÅ«renti. KusobbhÄ paripÅ«rÄ mahÄsobbhe paripÅ«renti. MahÄsobbhÄ paripÅ«rÄ kunnadiyo paripÅ«renti. Kunnadiyo paripÅ«rÄ mahÄnadiyo paripÅ«renti. In the same way, ignorance is the vital condition for choices. ⦠Freedom is the vital condition for the knowledge of ending.ā Evameva kho, bhikkhave, avijjÅ«panisÄ saį¹ khÄrÄ, saį¹ khÄrÅ«panisaį¹ viƱƱÄį¹aį¹, viƱƱÄį¹Å«panisaį¹ nÄmarÅ«paį¹, nÄmarÅ«pÅ«panisaį¹ saįø·Äyatanaį¹, saįø·ÄyatanÅ«paniso phasso, phassÅ«panisÄ vedanÄ, vedanÅ«panisÄ taį¹hÄ, taį¹hÅ«panisaį¹ upÄdÄnaį¹, upÄdÄnÅ«paniso bhavo, bhavÅ«panisÄ jÄti, jÄtÅ«panisaį¹ dukkhaį¹, dukkhÅ«panisÄ saddhÄ, saddhÅ«panisaį¹ pÄmojjaį¹, pÄmojjÅ«panisÄ pÄ«ti, pÄ«tÅ«panisÄ passaddhi, passaddhÅ«panisaį¹ sukhaį¹, sukhÅ«paniso samÄdhi, samÄdhÅ«panisaį¹ yathÄbhÅ«taƱÄį¹adassanaį¹, yathÄbhÅ«taƱÄį¹adassanÅ«panisÄ nibbidÄ, nibbidÅ«paniso virÄgo, virÄgÅ«panisÄ vimutti, vimuttÅ«panisaį¹ khaye ƱÄį¹anāti.
