A Leash (2nd) Dutiyagaddulabaddhasutta

At Sāvatthī. Sāvatthinidānaṁ.

ā€œMendicants, transmigration has no known beginning. ā€œAnamataggoyaṁ, bhikkhave, saṁsāro. No first point is found of sentient beings roaming and transmigrating, shrouded by ignorance and fettered by craving. Pubbā koį¹­i na paƱƱāyati avijjānÄ«varaṇānaṁ sattānaṁ taṇhāsaṁyojanānaṁ sandhāvataṁ saṁsarataṁ. Suppose a dog on a leash was tethered to a strong post or pillar. Whether walking, standing, sitting, or lying down, it stays right beside that post or pillar. Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, sā gaddulabaddho daįø·he khÄ«le vā thambhe vā upanibaddho. So gacchati cepi tameva khÄ«laṁ vā thambhaṁ vā upagacchati; tiį¹­į¹­hati cepi tameva khÄ«laṁ vā thambhaṁ vā upatiį¹­į¹­hati; nisÄ«dati cepi tameva khÄ«laṁ vā thambhaṁ vā upanisÄ«dati; nipajjati cepi tameva khÄ«laṁ vā thambhaṁ vā upanipajjati.

In the same way, an unlearned ordinary person regards form like this: ā€˜This is mine, I am this, this is my self.’ Evameva kho, bhikkhave, assutavā puthujjano rÅ«paṁ ā€˜etaṁ mama, esohamasmi, eso me attā’ti samanupassati. They regard feeling … Vedanaṁ … perception … saƱƱaṁ … choices … saį¹…khāre … consciousness like this: ā€˜This is mine, I am this, this is my self.’ viññāṇaṁ ā€˜etaṁ mama, esohamasmi, eso me attā’ti samanupassati. When walking, they walk right beside the five grasping aggregates. So gacchati cepi ime paƱcupādānakkhandhe upagacchati; When standing … tiį¹­į¹­hati cepi ime paƱcupādānakkhandhe upatiį¹­į¹­hati; sitting … nisÄ«dati cepi ime paƱcupādānakkhandhe upanisÄ«dati; lying down, they lie down right beside the five grasping aggregates. nipajjati cepi ime paƱcupādānakkhandhe upanipajjati.

So you should regularly check your own mind: Tasmātiha, bhikkhave, abhikkhaṇaṁ sakaṁ cittaṁ paccavekkhitabbaṁ: ā€˜For a long time this mind has been corrupted by greed, hate, and delusion.’ ā€˜dÄ«gharattamidaṁ cittaṁ saį¹…kiliį¹­į¹­haṁ rāgena dosena mohenā’ti. Sentient beings are corrupted because the mind is corrupted. Cittasaį¹…kilesā, bhikkhave, sattā saį¹…kilissanti; Sentient beings are purified because the mind is purified. cittavodānā sattā visujjhanti.

Mendicants, have you seen the picture called ā€˜Conduct’?ā€ Diį¹­į¹­haṁ vo, bhikkhave, caraṇaṁ nāma cittanā€ti?

ā€œYes, sir.ā€ ā€œEvaṁ, bhanteā€.

ā€œThat picture was elaborated by the mind, but the mind is even more elaborate than that. ā€œTampi kho, bhikkhave, caraṇaṁ nāma cittaṁ citteneva cittitaṁ. Tenapi kho, bhikkhave, caraṇena cittena cittaƱƱeva cittataraṁ.

So you should regularly check your own mind: Tasmātiha, bhikkhave, abhikkhaṇaṁ sakaṁ cittaṁ paccavekkhitabbaṁ: ā€˜For a long time this mind has been corrupted by greed, hate, and delusion.’ ā€˜dÄ«gharattamidaṁ cittaṁ saį¹…kiliį¹­į¹­haṁ rāgena dosena mohenā’ti. Sentient beings are corrupted because the mind is corrupted. Cittasaį¹…kilesā, bhikkhave, sattā saį¹…kilissanti; Sentient beings are purified because the mind is purified. cittavodānā sattā visujjhanti.

I don’t see any other order of beings as elaborate as the animal realm. Nāhaṁ, bhikkhave, aƱƱaṁ ekanikāyampi samanupassāmi evaṁ cittaṁ yathayidaṁ, bhikkhave, tiracchānagatā pāṇā. The creatures in the animal realm were elaborated by the mind, but the mind is even more elaborate than that. tepi kho, bhikkhave, tiracchānagatā pāṇā citteneva cittitā, tehipi kho, bhikkhave, tiracchānagatehi pāṇehi cittaƱƱeva cittataraṁ.

So you should regularly check your own mind: Tasmātiha, bhikkhave, abhikkhaṇaṁ sakaṁ cittaṁ paccavekkhitabbaṁ: ā€˜For a long time this mind has been corrupted by greed, hate, and delusion.’ ā€˜dÄ«gharattamidaṁ cittaṁ saį¹…kiliį¹­į¹­haṁ rāgena dosena mohenā’ti. Suppose an artist or painter had some dye, red lac, turmeric, indigo, or rose madder. And on a polished plank or a wall or a canvas they’d create the form of a woman or a man, whole in its major and minor limbs. Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, rajako vā cittakārako vā rajanāya vā lākhāya vā haliddiyā vā nÄ«liyā vā maƱjiį¹­į¹­hāya vā suparimaį¹­į¹­he phalake vā bhittiyā vā dussapaį¹­į¹­e vā itthirÅ«paṁ vā purisarÅ«paṁ vā abhinimmineyya sabbaį¹…gapaccaį¹…giṁ;

In the same way, when an unlearned ordinary person generatesĀ a future life, all they generateĀ is form, feeling, perception, choices, and consciousness. evameva kho, bhikkhave, assutavā puthujjano rÅ«paƱƱeva abhinibbattento abhinibbatteti, vedanaƱƱeva …pe… saƱƱaƱƱeva … saį¹…khāreyeva … viññāṇaƱƱeva abhinibbattento abhinibbatteti.

What do you think, mendicants? Taṁ kiṁ maƱƱatha, bhikkhave, Is form permanent or impermanent?ā€ rÅ«paṁ niccaṁ vā aniccaṁ vÄā€ti?

ā€œImpermanent, sir.ā€ ā€œAniccaṁ, bhanteā€.

ā€œIs feeling … ā€œVedanā … perception … saƱƱā … choices … saį¹…khārā … consciousness permanent or impermanent?ā€ … viññāṇaṁ …pe…

ā€œSo you should truly see … ā€œtasmātiha, bhikkhave …pe… Seeing this … evaṁ passaṁ …pe… They understand: ā€˜ā€¦ there is nothing further for this place.ā€™ā€ nāparaṁ itthattāyāti pajānātÄ«ā€ti.
