āMendicants, transmigration has no known beginning. āAnamataggoyaį¹, bhikkhave, saį¹sÄro. No first point is found of sentient beings roaming and transmigrating, shrouded by ignorance and fettered by craving. PubbÄ koį¹i na paƱƱÄyati avijjÄnÄ«varaį¹Änaį¹ sattÄnaį¹ taį¹hÄsaį¹yojanÄnaį¹ sandhÄvataį¹ saį¹sarataį¹. Suppose a dog on a leash was tethered to a strong post or pillar. Whether walking, standing, sitting, or lying down, it stays right beside that post or pillar. SeyyathÄpi, bhikkhave, sÄ gaddulabaddho daįø·he khÄ«le vÄ thambhe vÄ upanibaddho. So gacchati cepi tameva khÄ«laį¹ vÄ thambhaį¹ vÄ upagacchati; tiį¹į¹hati cepi tameva khÄ«laį¹ vÄ thambhaį¹ vÄ upatiį¹į¹hati; nisÄ«dati cepi tameva khÄ«laį¹ vÄ thambhaį¹ vÄ upanisÄ«dati; nipajjati cepi tameva khÄ«laį¹ vÄ thambhaį¹ vÄ upanipajjati.
In the same way, an unlearned ordinary person regards form like this: āThis is mine, I am this, this is my self.ā Evameva kho, bhikkhave, assutavÄ puthujjano rÅ«paį¹ āetaį¹ mama, esohamasmi, eso me attÄāti samanupassati. They regard feeling ⦠VedanaṠ⦠perception ⦠saƱƱaṠ⦠choices ⦠saį¹ khÄre ⦠consciousness like this: āThis is mine, I am this, this is my self.ā viƱƱÄį¹aį¹ āetaį¹ mama, esohamasmi, eso me attÄāti samanupassati. When walking, they walk right beside the five grasping aggregates. So gacchati cepi ime paƱcupÄdÄnakkhandhe upagacchati; When standing ⦠tiį¹į¹hati cepi ime paƱcupÄdÄnakkhandhe upatiį¹į¹hati; sitting ⦠nisÄ«dati cepi ime paƱcupÄdÄnakkhandhe upanisÄ«dati; lying down, they lie down right beside the five grasping aggregates. nipajjati cepi ime paƱcupÄdÄnakkhandhe upanipajjati.
So you should regularly check your own mind: TasmÄtiha, bhikkhave, abhikkhaį¹aį¹ sakaį¹ cittaį¹ paccavekkhitabbaį¹: āFor a long time this mind has been corrupted by greed, hate, and delusion.ā ādÄ«gharattamidaį¹ cittaį¹ saį¹ kiliį¹į¹haį¹ rÄgena dosena mohenÄāti. Sentient beings are corrupted because the mind is corrupted. Cittasaį¹ kilesÄ, bhikkhave, sattÄ saį¹ kilissanti; Sentient beings are purified because the mind is purified. cittavodÄnÄ sattÄ visujjhanti.
Mendicants, have you seen the picture called āConductā?ā Diį¹į¹haį¹ vo, bhikkhave, caraį¹aį¹ nÄma cittanāti?
āYes, sir.ā āEvaį¹, bhanteā.
āThat picture was elaborated by the mind, but the mind is even more elaborate than that. āTampi kho, bhikkhave, caraį¹aį¹ nÄma cittaį¹ citteneva cittitaį¹. Tenapi kho, bhikkhave, caraį¹ena cittena cittaƱƱeva cittataraį¹.
So you should regularly check your own mind: TasmÄtiha, bhikkhave, abhikkhaį¹aį¹ sakaį¹ cittaį¹ paccavekkhitabbaį¹: āFor a long time this mind has been corrupted by greed, hate, and delusion.ā ādÄ«gharattamidaį¹ cittaį¹ saį¹ kiliį¹į¹haį¹ rÄgena dosena mohenÄāti. I donāt see any other order of beings as elaborate as the animal realm. NÄhaį¹, bhikkhave, aƱƱaį¹ ekanikÄyampi samanupassÄmi evaį¹ cittaį¹ yathayidaį¹, bhikkhave, tiracchÄnagatÄ pÄį¹Ä. The creatures in the animal realm were elaborated by the mind, but the mind is even more elaborate than that. tepi kho, bhikkhave, tiracchÄnagatÄ pÄį¹Ä citteneva cittitÄ, tehipi kho, bhikkhave, tiracchÄnagatehi pÄį¹ehi cittaƱƱeva cittataraį¹.

And on a polished plank or a wall or a canvas theyād create the form of a woman or a man, whole in its major and minor limbs. SeyyathÄpi, bhikkhave, rajako vÄ cittakÄrako vÄ rajanÄya vÄ lÄkhÄya vÄ haliddiyÄ vÄ nÄ«liyÄ vÄ maƱjiį¹į¹hÄya vÄ suparimaį¹į¹he phalake vÄ bhittiyÄ vÄ dussapaį¹į¹e vÄ itthirÅ«paį¹ vÄ purisarÅ«paį¹ vÄ abhinimmineyya sabbaį¹ gapaccaį¹ giį¹;
In the same way, when an unlearned ordinary person generatesĀ a future life, all they generateĀ is form, feeling, perception, choices, and consciousness. evameva kho, bhikkhave, assutavÄ puthujjano rÅ«paƱƱeva abhinibbattento abhinibbatteti, vedanaƱƱeva ā¦pe⦠saƱƱaƱƱeva ⦠saį¹ khÄreyeva ⦠viƱƱÄį¹aƱƱeva abhinibbattento abhinibbatteti.
What do you think, mendicants? Taį¹ kiį¹ maƱƱatha, bhikkhave, Is form permanent or impermanent?ā rÅ«paį¹ niccaį¹ vÄ aniccaį¹ vÄāti?

āIs feeling ⦠āVedanÄ ā¦ perception ⦠saĆ±Ć±Ä ā¦ choices ⦠saį¹ khÄrÄ ā¦ consciousness permanent or impermanent?ā ⦠viƱƱÄį¹aį¹ ā¦peā¦
āSo you should truly see ⦠ātasmÄtiha, bhikkhave ā¦pe⦠Seeing this ⦠evaį¹ passaį¹ ā¦pe⦠They understand: ā⦠there is nothing further for this place.āā nÄparaį¹ itthattÄyÄti pajÄnÄtÄ«āti.
