Knowledge Vijjāsutta
At Sāvatthī. Sāvatthinidānaṁ.
Seated to one side, that mendicant said to the Buddha: Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho so bhikkhu bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:
“Sir, they speak of this thing called ‘knowledge’. “‘vijjā, vijjā’ti, bhante, vuccati. What is knowledge? Katamā nu kho, bhante, vijjā; And how is a knowledgeable person defined?” kittāvatā ca vijjāgato hotī”ti?
“Mendicant, it’s when a learned noble disciple understands form, its origin, its cessation, and the practice that leads to its cessation. “Idha, bhikkhu, sutavā ariyasāvako rūpaṁ pajānāti, rūpasamudayaṁ … rūpanirodhaṁ … rūpanirodhagāminiṁ paṭipadaṁ pajānāti. They understand feeling … Vedanaṁ … perception … saññaṁ … choices … saṅkhāre pajānāti …pe… consciousness, its origin, its cessation, and the practice that leads to its cessation. viññāṇanirodhagāminiṁ paṭipadaṁ pajānāti.
This is called knowledge. Ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhu, vijjā; And this is how a knowledgeable person is defined.” ettāvatā ca vijjāgato hotī”ti.
Dutiyaṁ.
