Origin Samudayasutta

At Varanasi. Bārāṇasiyaṁ viharanti isipatane migadāye …pe…

ā€œReverend Sāriputta, they speak of this thing called ā€˜ignorance’. ā€œā€˜avijjā, avijjā’ti, āvuso sāriputta, vuccati. What is ignorance? Katamā nu kho, āvuso, avijjā; And how is an ignorant person defined?ā€ kittāvatā ca avijjāgato hotÄ«ā€ti?

ā€œReverend, an unlearned ordinary person doesn’t truly understand the origin, the disappearance, the gratification, the drawback, and the escape when it comes to form, ā€œIdhāvuso, assutavā puthujjano rÅ«passa samudayaƱca atthaį¹…gamaƱca assādaƱca ādÄ«navaƱca nissaraṇaƱca yathābhÅ«taṁ nappajānāti. feeling, Vedanāya …pe… perception, saƱƱāya … choices, saį¹…khārānaṁ … and consciousness. viññāṇassa samudayaƱca atthaį¹…gamaƱca assādaƱca ādÄ«navaƱca nissaraṇaƱca yathābhÅ«taṁ nappajānāti.

This is called ignorance. Ayaṁ vuccatāvuso, avijjā; And this is how an ignorant person is defined.ā€ ettāvatā ca avijjāgato hotÄ«ā€ti.
