So I have heard. Evaį¹ me sutaį¹āAt one time the Buddha was staying near VesÄlÄ«, at the Great Wood, in the hall with the peaked roof. ekaį¹ samayaį¹ bhagavÄ vesÄliyaį¹ viharati mahÄvane kÅ«į¹ÄgÄrasÄlÄyaį¹.
Then MahÄli the Licchavi went up to the Buddha ⦠and said to him: Atha kho mahÄli licchavi yena bhagavÄ tenupasaį¹ kami ā¦pe⦠ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho mahÄli licchavi bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca:
āSir, PÅ«raį¹a Kassapa says this: āPÅ«raį¹o, bhante, kassapo evamÄha: āThere is no cause or reason for the corruption of sentient beings. ānatthi hetu natthi paccayo sattÄnaį¹ saį¹ kilesÄya; Sentient beings are corrupted without cause or reason. ahetÅ« appaccayÄ sattÄ saį¹ kilissanti. Thereās no cause or reason for the purification of sentient beings. Natthi hetu natthi paccayo sattÄnaį¹ visuddhiyÄ; Sentient beings are purified without cause or reason.ā ahetÅ« appaccayÄ sattÄ visujjhantÄ«āti. What does the Buddha say about this?ā Idha bhagavÄ kimÄhÄāti?
āMahÄli, there is a cause and reason for the corruption of sentient beings. āAtthi, mahÄli, hetu atthi paccayo sattÄnaį¹ saį¹ kilesÄya; Sentient beings are corrupted with cause and reason. sahetÅ« sappaccayÄ sattÄ saį¹ kilissanti. There is a cause and reason for the purification of sentient beings. Atthi, mahÄli, hetu, atthi paccayo sattÄnaį¹ visuddhiyÄ; Sentient beings are purified with cause and reason.ā sahetÅ« sappaccayÄ sattÄ visujjhantÄ«āti.
āBut sir, what is the cause and reason for the corruption of sentient beings? āKatamo pana, bhante, hetu katamo paccayo sattÄnaį¹ saį¹ kilesÄya; How are sentient beings corrupted with cause and reason?ā kathaį¹ sahetÅ« sappaccayÄ sattÄ saį¹ kilissantÄ«āti?
āMahÄli, if form were exclusively painfulāsoaked and steeped in pain and not steeped in pleasureāsentient beings wouldnāt be aroused by it. āRÅ«paƱca hidaį¹, mahÄli, ekantadukkhaį¹ abhavissa dukkhÄnupatitaį¹ dukkhÄvakkantaį¹ anavakkantaį¹ sukhena, nayidaį¹ sattÄ rÅ«pasmiį¹ sÄrajjeyyuį¹. But because form is pleasurableāsoaked and steeped in pleasure and not steeped in paināsentient beings are aroused by it. YasmÄ ca kho, mahÄli, rÅ«paį¹ sukhaį¹ sukhÄnupatitaį¹ sukhÄvakkantaį¹ anavakkantaį¹ dukkhena, tasmÄ sattÄ rÅ«pasmiį¹ sÄrajjanti; Since they are aroused by it, theyāre caught up in it, and so they become corrupted. sÄrÄgÄ saį¹yujjanti; saį¹yogÄ saį¹ kilissanti. This is a cause and reason for the corruption of sentient beings. Ayaį¹ kho, mahÄli, hetu, ayaį¹ paccayo sattÄnaį¹ saį¹ kilesÄya; This is how sentient beings are corrupted with cause and reason. evaį¹ sahetÅ« sappaccayÄ sattÄ saį¹ kilissanti.
If feeling ⦠VedanÄ ca hidaį¹, mahÄli, ekantadukkhÄ abhavissa dukkhÄnupatitÄ dukkhÄvakkantÄ anavakkantÄ sukhena, nayidaį¹ sattÄ vedanÄya sÄrajjeyyuį¹. YasmÄ ca kho, mahÄli, vedanÄ sukhÄ sukhÄnupatitÄ sukhÄvakkantÄ anavakkantÄ dukkhena, tasmÄ sattÄ vedanÄya sÄrajjanti; sÄrÄgÄ saį¹yujjanti; saį¹yogÄ saį¹ kilissanti. Ayampi kho, mahÄli, hetu, ayaį¹ paccayo sattÄnaį¹ saį¹ kilesÄya. Evampi sahetÅ« sappaccayÄ sattÄ saį¹ kilissanti.
