With Mahāli Mahālisutta

So I have heard. Evaṁ me sutaṁ—At one time the Buddha was staying near VesālÄ«, at the Great Wood, in the hall with the peaked roof. ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā vesāliyaṁ viharati mahāvane kūṭāgārasālāyaṁ.

Then Mahāli the Licchavi went up to the Buddha … and said to him: Atha kho mahāli licchavi yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kami …pe… ekamantaṁ nisinno kho mahāli licchavi bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:

ā€œSir, PÅ«raṇa Kassapa says this: ā€œPÅ«raṇo, bhante, kassapo evamāha: ā€˜There is no cause or reason for the corruption of sentient beings. ā€˜natthi hetu natthi paccayo sattānaṁ saį¹…kilesāya; Sentient beings are corrupted without cause or reason. ahetÅ« appaccayā sattā saį¹…kilissanti. There’s no cause or reason for the purification of sentient beings. Natthi hetu natthi paccayo sattānaṁ visuddhiyā; Sentient beings are purified without cause or reason.’ ahetÅ« appaccayā sattā visujjhantī’ti. What does the Buddha say about this?ā€ Idha bhagavā kimāhÄā€ti?

ā€œMahāli, there is a cause and reason for the corruption of sentient beings. ā€œAtthi, mahāli, hetu atthi paccayo sattānaṁ saį¹…kilesāya; Sentient beings are corrupted with cause and reason. sahetÅ« sappaccayā sattā saį¹…kilissanti. There is a cause and reason for the purification of sentient beings. Atthi, mahāli, hetu, atthi paccayo sattānaṁ visuddhiyā; Sentient beings are purified with cause and reason.ā€ sahetÅ« sappaccayā sattā visujjhantÄ«ā€ti.

ā€œBut sir, what is the cause and reason for the corruption of sentient beings? ā€œKatamo pana, bhante, hetu katamo paccayo sattānaṁ saį¹…kilesāya; How are sentient beings corrupted with cause and reason?ā€ kathaṁ sahetÅ« sappaccayā sattā saį¹…kilissantÄ«ā€ti?

ā€œMahāli, if form were exclusively painful—soaked and steeped in pain and not steeped in pleasure—sentient beings wouldn’t be aroused by it. ā€œRÅ«paƱca hidaṁ, mahāli, ekantadukkhaṁ abhavissa dukkhānupatitaṁ dukkhāvakkantaṁ anavakkantaṁ sukhena, nayidaṁ sattā rÅ«pasmiṁ sārajjeyyuṁ. But because form is pleasurable—soaked and steeped in pleasure and not steeped in pain—sentient beings are aroused by it. Yasmā ca kho, mahāli, rÅ«paṁ sukhaṁ sukhānupatitaṁ sukhāvakkantaṁ anavakkantaṁ dukkhena, tasmā sattā rÅ«pasmiṁ sārajjanti; Since they are aroused by it, they’re caught up in it, and so they become corrupted. sārāgā saṁyujjanti; saṁyogā saį¹…kilissanti. This is a cause and reason for the corruption of sentient beings. Ayaṁ kho, mahāli, hetu, ayaṁ paccayo sattānaṁ saį¹…kilesāya; This is how sentient beings are corrupted with cause and reason. evaṁ sahetÅ« sappaccayā sattā saį¹…kilissanti.

Yasmā ca kho, mahāli, vedanā sukhā sukhānupatitā sukhāvakkantā anavakkantā dukkhena, tasmā sattā vedanāya sārajjanti; sārāgā saṁyujjanti; saṁyogā saį¹…kilissanti. Ayampi kho, mahāli, hetu, ayaṁ paccayo sattānaṁ saį¹…kilesāya. Evampi sahetÅ« sappaccayā sattā saį¹…kilissanti.

Yasmā ca kho, mahāli, saį¹…khārā sukhā sukhānupatitā sukhāvakkantā anavakkantā dukkhena, tasmā sattā saį¹…khāresu sārajjanti; sārāgā saṁyujjanti; saṁyogā saį¹…kilissanti. Ayampi kho, mahāli, hetu, ayaṁ paccayo sattānaṁ saį¹…kilesāya. Evampi sahetÅ« sappaccayā sattā saį¹…kilissanti.

But because consciousness is pleasurable—soaked and steeped in pleasure and not steeped in pain—sentient beings are aroused by it. Yasmā ca kho, mahāli, viññāṇaṁ sukhaṁ sukhānupatitaṁ sukhāvakkantaṁ anavakkantaṁ dukkhena, tasmā sattā viññāṇasmiṁ sārajjanti; Since they are aroused by it, they’re caught up in it, and so they become corrupted. sārāgā saṁyujjanti; saṁyogā saį¹…kilissanti. ā€œMahāli, if form was perfectly pleasurable—soaked and steeped in pleasure and not steeped in pain—sentient beings wouldn’t grow disillusioned with it. ā€œRÅ«paƱca hidaṁ, mahāli, ekantasukhaṁ abhavissa sukhānupatitaṁ sukhāvakkantaṁ anavakkantaṁ dukkhena, nayidaṁ sattā rÅ«pasmiṁ nibbindeyyuṁ. But because form is painful—soaked and steeped in pain and not steeped in pleasure—sentient beings do grow disillusioned with it. Yasmā ca kho, mahāli, rÅ«paṁ dukkhaṁ dukkhānupatitaṁ dukkhāvakkantaṁ anavakkantaṁ sukhena, tasmā sattā rÅ«pasmiṁ nibbindanti; Being disillusioned, desire fades away. When desire fades away they are purified. nibbindaṁ virajjanti; virāgā visujjhanti. This is a cause and reason for the purification of sentient beings. Ayaṁ kho, mahāli, hetu, ayaṁ paccayo, sattānaṁ visuddhiyā. This is how sentient beings are purified with cause and reason. Evaṁ sahetÅ« sappaccayā sattā visujjhanti.

But because consciousness is painful—soaked and steeped in pain and not steeped in pleasure—sentient beings do grow disillusioned with it.
