So I have heard. Evaį¹ me sutaį¹āAt one time the Buddha was staying near RÄjagaha, in the Bamboo Grove, the squirrelsā feeding ground. ekaį¹ samayaį¹ bhagavÄ rÄjagahe viharati veįø·uvane kalandakanivÄpe. There the Buddha ⦠said: Tatra kho bhagavÄ ā¦pe⦠etadavoca:
āMendicants, the lifespan of humans is short. āAppamidaį¹, bhikkhave, manussÄnaį¹ Äyu. You must go to the next life. So you should do what is skillful, you should practice the spiritual life. GamanÄ«yo samparÄyo, kattabbaį¹ kusalaį¹, caritabbaį¹ brahmacariyaį¹. No-one born is immortal. Natthi jÄtassa amaraį¹aį¹. A long life is a hundred years or a little more.ā Yo, bhikkhave, ciraį¹ jÄ«vati, so vassasataį¹ appaį¹ vÄ bhiyyoāti.
Then MÄra the Wicked went up to the Buddha and addressed him in verse: Atha kho mÄro pÄpimÄ yena bhagavÄ tenupasaį¹ kami; upasaį¹ kamitvÄ bhagavantaį¹ gÄthÄya ajjhabhÄsi:
āThe days and nights donāt rush by, āNÄccayanti ahorattÄ, and life isnāt cut short. JÄ«vitaį¹ nÅ«parujjhati; The life of mortals keeps rolling on, Äyu anupariyÄyati maccÄnaį¹, like a chariotās rim around the hub.ā NemÄ«va rathakubbaranāti.
āThe days and nights rush by, āAccayanti ahorattÄ, and then life is cut short. jÄ«vitaį¹ uparujjhati; The life of mortals wastes away, Äyu khÄ«yati maccÄnaį¹, like the water in tiny streams.ā kunnadÄ«naį¹va odakanāti.
Then MÄra the Wicked, thinking, āThe Buddha knows me! The Holy One knows me!ā miserable and sad, vanished right there. Atha kho mÄro pÄpimÄ ājÄnÄti maį¹ bhagavÄ, jÄnÄti maį¹ sugatoāti dukkhÄ« dummano tatthevantaradhÄyÄ«ti.
Paį¹hamo vaggo.
