Lifespan (2nd) Dutiyaāyusutta

So I have heard. Evaṁ me sutaṁ—At one time the Buddha was staying near Rājagaha, in the Bamboo Grove, the squirrels’ feeding ground. ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā rājagahe viharati veįø·uvane kalandakanivāpe. There the Buddha … said: Tatra kho bhagavā …pe… etadavoca:

ā€œMendicants, the lifespan of humans is short. ā€œAppamidaṁ, bhikkhave, manussānaṁ āyu. You must go to the next life. So you should do what is skillful, you should practice the spiritual life. GamanÄ«yo samparāyo, kattabbaṁ kusalaṁ, caritabbaṁ brahmacariyaṁ. No-one born is immortal. Natthi jātassa amaraṇaṁ. A long life is a hundred years or a little more.ā€ Yo, bhikkhave, ciraṁ jÄ«vati, so vassasataṁ appaṁ vā bhiyyoā€ti.

Then Māra the Wicked went up to the Buddha and addressed him in verse: Atha kho māro pāpimā yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā bhagavantaṁ gāthāya ajjhabhāsi:

ā€œThe days and nights don’t rush by, ā€œNāccayanti ahorattā, and life isn’t cut short. JÄ«vitaṁ nÅ«parujjhati; The life of mortals keeps rolling on, Āyu anupariyāyati maccānaṁ, like a chariot’s rim around the hub.ā€ NemÄ«va rathakubbaranā€ti.

ā€œThe days and nights rush by, ā€œAccayanti ahorattā, and then life is cut short. jÄ«vitaṁ uparujjhati; The life of mortals wastes away, Āyu khÄ«yati maccānaṁ, like the water in tiny streams.ā€ kunnadÄ«naṁva odakanā€ti.

Then Māra the Wicked, thinking, ā€œThe Buddha knows me! The Holy One knows me!ā€ miserable and sad, vanished right there. Atha kho māro pāpimā ā€œjānāti maṁ bhagavā, jānāti maṁ sugatoā€ti dukkhÄ« dummano tatthevantaradhāyÄ«ti.

Paį¹hamo vaggo.
