A Monk Bhikkhusutta

At Sāvatthī. Sāvatthinidānaṁ.

Then a mendicant went up to the Buddha … and asked him, Atha kho aƱƱataro bhikkhu yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kami …pe… ekamantaṁ nisinno kho so bhikkhu bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: ā€œSir, they speak of the ā€˜awakening factors’. ā€œā€˜bojjhaį¹…gā, bojjhaį¹…gā’ti, bhante, vuccanti. How are the awakening factors defined?ā€ Kittāvatā nu kho, bhante, ā€˜bojjhaį¹…gā’ti vuccantÄ«ā€ti?

ā€œMendicant, they’re called awakening factors because they lead to awakening. ā€œBodhāya saṁvattantÄ«ti kho, bhikkhu, tasmā ā€˜bojjhaį¹…gā’ti vuccanti.

A mendicant develops the awakening factors of mindfulness, investigation of principles, energy, rapture, tranquility, immersion, Idha, bhikkhu, satisambojjhaį¹…gaṁ bhāveti vivekanissitaṁ virāganissitaṁ nirodhanissitaṁ vossaggapariṇāmiṁ …pe… and equanimity, which rely on seclusion, fading away, and cessation, and ripen as letting go. upekkhāsambojjhaį¹…gaṁ bhāveti vivekanissitaṁ virāganissitaṁ nirodhanissitaṁ vossaggapariṇāmiṁ. As they develop the seven awakening factors, their mind is freed from the defilements of sensuality, desire to be reborn, and ignorance. Tassime satta bojjhaį¹…ge bhāvayato kāmāsavāpi cittaṁ vimuccati, bhavāsavāpi cittaṁ vimuccati, avijjāsavāpi cittaṁ vimuccati. When they’re freed, they know they’re freed. Vimuttasmiṁ vimuttamiti ñāṇaṁ hoti. They understand: ā€˜Rebirth is ended, the spiritual journey has been completed, what had to be done has been done, there is nothing further for this place.’ ā€˜Khīṇā jāti, vusitaṁ brahmacariyaṁ, kataṁ karaṇīyaṁ, nāparaṁ itthattāyā’ti pajānāti.

They’re called awakening factors because they lead to awakening.ā€ Bodhāya saṁvattantÄ«ti, bhikkhu, tasmā ā€˜bojjhaį¹…gā’ti vuccantÄ«ā€ti.
