Mindful Satisutta

At one time the Buddha was staying near VesālÄ«, in Ambapālī’s mango grove. Ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā vesāliyaṁ viharati ambapālivane. There the Buddha addressed the mendicants, Tatra kho bhagavā bhikkhÅ« āmantesi: ā€œMendicants!ā€ ā€œbhikkhavoā€ti.

ā€œVenerable sir,ā€ they replied. ā€œBhadanteā€ti te bhikkhÅ« bhagavato paccassosuṁ. The Buddha said this: Bhagavā etadavoca:

ā€œMendicants, a mendicant should live mindful and aware. ā€œSato, bhikkhave, bhikkhu vihareyya sampajāno. This is my instruction to you. Ayaṁ vo amhākaṁ anusāsanÄ«.

And how is a mendicant mindful? KathaƱca, bhikkhave, bhikkhu sato hoti? It’s when a mendicant meditates by observing an aspect of the body—keen, aware, and mindful, rid of covetousness and displeasure for the world. Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu kāye kāyānupassÄ« viharati ātāpÄ« sampajāno satimā, vineyya loke abhijjhādomanassaṁ; They meditate observing an aspect of feelings … vedanāsu …pe… mind … citte …pe… principles—keen, aware, and mindful, rid of covetousness and displeasure for the world. dhammesu dhammānupassÄ« viharati ātāpÄ« sampajāno satimā, vineyya loke abhijjhādomanassaṁ. That’s how a mendicant is mindful. Evaṁ kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhu sato hoti.

And how is a mendicant aware? KathaƱca, bhikkhave, bhikkhu sampajāno hoti? It’s when a mendicant acts with situational awareness when going out and coming back; when looking ahead and aside; when bending and extending the limbs; when bearing the outer robe, bowl and robes; when eating, drinking, chewing, and tasting; when urinating and defecating; when walking, standing, sitting, sleeping, waking, speaking, and keeping silent. Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu abhikkante paį¹ikkante sampajānakārÄ« hoti, ālokite vilokite sampajānakārÄ« hoti, samiƱjite pasārite sampajānakārÄ« hoti, saį¹…ghāṭipattacÄ«varadhāraṇe sampajānakārÄ« hoti, asite pÄ«te khāyite sāyite sampajānakārÄ« hoti, uccārapassāvakamme sampajānakārÄ« hoti, gate į¹hite nisinne sutte jāgarite bhāsite tuṇhÄ«bhāve sampajānakārÄ« hoti. That’s how a mendicant acts with situational awareness. Evaṁ kho, bhikkhave, bhikkhu sampajānakārÄ« hoti. A mendicant should live mindful and aware. Sato, bhikkhave, bhikkhu vihareyya sampajāno. This is my instruction to you.ā€ Ayaṁ vo amhākaṁ anusāsanÄ«ā€ti.

Dutiyaṁ.
