Ten Discourses on Searches, Etc. EsanÄdisuttadasaka
āMendicants, there are these three searches. āTisso imÄ, bhikkhave, esanÄ. What three? KatamÄ tisso? The search for sensual pleasures, the search for continued existence, and the search for a spiritual path. KÄmesanÄ, bhavesanÄ, brahmacariyesanÄāThese are the three searches. imÄ kho, bhikkhave, tisso esanÄ.
The four right efforts should be developed for the direct knowledge, complete understanding, finishing, and giving up of these three searches. ImÄsaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, tissannaį¹ esanÄnaį¹ abhiƱƱÄya pariƱƱÄya parikkhayÄya pahÄnÄya cattÄro sammappadhÄnÄ bhÄvetabbÄ. What four? Katame cattÄro? Itās when a mendicant generates enthusiasm, tries, makes an effort, exerts the mind, and strives so that bad, unskillful qualities donāt arise. ⦠Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu anuppannÄnaį¹ ā¦pe⦠so that skillful qualities that have arisen remain, are not lost, but increase, mature, and are completed by development. uppannÄnaį¹ kusalÄnaį¹ dhammÄnaį¹ į¹hitiyÄ asammosÄya bhiyyobhÄvÄya vepullÄya bhÄvanÄya pÄripÅ«riyÄ chandaį¹ janeti vÄyamati vÄ«riyaį¹ Ärabhati cittaį¹ paggaį¹hÄti padahati.
