Ten Discourses on Searches, Etc. Esanādisuttadasaka

ā€œMendicants, there are these three searches. ā€œTisso imā, bhikkhave, esanā. What three? Katamā tisso? The search for sensual pleasures, the search for continued existence, and the search for a spiritual path. Kāmesanā, bhavesanā, brahmacariyesanā—These are the three searches. imā kho, bhikkhave, tisso esanā.

The four right efforts should be developed for the direct knowledge, complete understanding, finishing, and giving up of these three searches. Imāsaṁ kho, bhikkhave, tissannaṁ esanānaṁ abhiƱƱāya pariƱƱāya parikkhayāya pahānāya cattāro sammappadhānā bhāvetabbā. What four? Katame cattāro? It’s when a mendicant generates enthusiasm, tries, makes an effort, exerts the mind, and strives so that bad, unskillful qualities don’t arise. … Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu anuppannānaṁ …pe… so that skillful qualities that have arisen remain, are not lost, but increase, mature, and are completed by development. uppannānaṁ kusalānaṁ dhammānaṁ į¹­hitiyā asammosāya bhiyyobhāvāya vepullāya bhāvanāya pāripÅ«riyā chandaṁ janeti vāyamati vÄ«riyaṁ ārabhati cittaṁ paggaṇhāti padahati.

These four right efforts should be developed for the direct knowledge, complete understanding, finishing, and giving up of these three searches.ā€ Imāsaṁ kho, bhikkhave, tissannaṁ esanānaṁ abhiƱƱāya pariƱƱāya parikkhayāya pahānāya ime cattāro sammappadhānā bhāvetabbÄā€ti.
