Floods, Etc. Oghādisutta

ā€œMendicants, there are five higher fetters. ā€œPaƱcimāni, bhikkhave, uddhambhāgiyāni saṁyojanāni. What five? Katamāni paƱca? Desire for rebirth in the realm of luminous form, desire for rebirth in the formless realm, conceit, restlessness, and ignorance. RÅ«parāgo, arÅ«parāgo, māno, uddhaccaṁ, avijjā—These are the five higher fetters. imāni kho, bhikkhave, paƱcuddhambhāgiyāni saṁyojanāni.

The five powers should be developed for the direct knowledge, complete understanding, finishing, and giving up of these five higher fetters. Imesaṁ kho, bhikkhave, paƱcannaṁ uddhambhāgiyānaṁ saṁyojanānaṁ abhiƱƱāya pariƱƱāya parikkhayāya pahānāya paƱca balāni bhāvetabbāni. What five? Katamāni paƱca? It’s when a mendicant develops the powers of faith, Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu, saddhābalaṁ bhāveti vivekanissitaṁ virāganissitaṁ nirodhanissitaṁ vossaggapariṇāmiṁ, energy, vÄ«riyabalaṁ …pe… mindfulness, satibalaṁ … immersion, samādhibalaṁ … and wisdom, which rely on seclusion, fading away, and cessation, and ripen as letting go. paƱƱābalaṁ bhāveti vivekanissitaṁ virāganissitaṁ nirodhanissitaṁ vossaggapariṇāmiṁ.

These five powers should be developed for the direct knowledge, complete understanding, finishing, and giving up of these five higher fetters.ā€ Imesaṁ kho, bhikkhave, paƱcannaṁ uddhambhāgiyānaṁ saṁyojanānaṁ abhiƱƱāya pariƱƱāya parikkhayāya pahānāya imāni paƱca balāni bhāvetabbānÄ«ā€ti.
