In Common With the Gods DevasabhÄgatasutta
āMendicants, when someone has four things the gods are pleased and speak of what they have in common. āCatÅ«hi, bhikkhave, dhammehi samannÄgataį¹ attamanÄ devÄ sabhÄgataį¹ kathenti. What four? Katamehi catÅ«hi? Firstly, a noble disciple has experiential confidence in the Buddha ⦠Idha, bhikkhave, ariyasÄvako buddhe aveccappasÄdena samannÄgato hotiāitipi so bhagavÄ ā¦pe⦠satthÄ devamanussÄnaį¹ buddho bhagavÄti. There are deities with experiential confidence in the Buddha who passed away from here and were reborn there. They think: YÄ tÄ devatÄ buddhe aveccappasÄdena samannÄgatÄ ito cutÄ tatrÅ«papannÄ tÄsaį¹ evaį¹ hoti: āHaving such experiential confidence in the Buddha, we passed away from there and were reborn here. That noble disciple possesses the same kind of experiential confidence in the Buddha, so they will come into the presence of the gods.ā āyathÄrÅ«pena kho mayaį¹ buddhe aveccappasÄdena samannÄgatÄ tato cutÄ idhÅ«papannÄ, ariyasÄvakopi tathÄrÅ«pena buddhe aveccappasÄdena samannÄgato ehÄ«ti devÄnaį¹ santikeāti.
Furthermore, a noble disciple has experiential confidence in the teaching ⦠Puna caparaį¹, bhikkhave, ariyasÄvako dhamme ā¦pe⦠the Saį¹ gha ⦠saį¹ ghe ā¦pe⦠And they have the ethical conduct loved by the noble ones ⦠leading to immersion. ariyakantehi sÄ«lehi samannÄgato hoti akhaį¹įøehi ā¦pe⦠samÄdhisaį¹vattanikehi. There are deities with the ethical conduct loved by the noble ones who passed away from here and were reborn there. They think: YÄ tÄ devatÄ ariyakantehi sÄ«lehi samannÄgatÄ ito cutÄ tatrÅ«papannÄ tÄsaį¹ evaį¹ hoti: āHaving such ethical conduct loved by the noble ones, we passed away from there and were reborn here. That noble disciple possesses the same kind of ethical conduct loved by the noble ones, so they will come into the presence of the gods.ā āyathÄrÅ«pehi kho mayaį¹ ariyakantehi sÄ«lehi samannÄgatÄ tato cutÄ idhÅ«papannÄ, ariyasÄvakopi tathÄrÅ«pehi ariyakantehi sÄ«lehi samannÄgato ehÄ«ti devÄnaį¹ santikeāti.
