Nandiya the Sakyan Nandiyasakkasutta

At one time the Buddha was staying in the land of the Sakyans, near Kapilavatthu in the Banyan Tree Monastery. Ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā sakkesu viharati kapilavatthusmiṁ nigrodhārāme. Then Nandiya the Sakyan went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him: Atha kho nandiyo sakko yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho nandiyo sakko bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:

ā€œSir, if a noble disciple were to totally and utterly lack the four factors of stream-entry, would they live negligently?ā€ ā€œyasseva nu kho, bhante, ariyasāvakassa cattāri sotāpattiyaį¹…gāni sabbena sabbaṁ sabbathā sabbaṁ natthi sveva nu kho, bhante, ariyasāvako pamādavihārÄ«ā€ti.

ā€œNandiya, someone who totally and utterly lacks these four factors of stream-entry stands outside in the faction of ordinary persons, I say. ā€œā€˜Yassa kho, nandiya, cattāri sotāpattiyaį¹…gāni sabbena sabbaṁ sabbathā sabbaṁ natthi tamahaṁ bāhiro puthujjanapakkhe į¹­hito’ti vadāmi. Neverthless, Nandiya, as to how a noble disciple lives negligently and how they live diligently, Api ca, nandiya, yathā ariyasāvako pamādavihārÄ« ceva hoti, appamādavihārÄ« ca listen and apply your mind well, I will speak.ā€ taṁ suṇāhi, sādhukaṁ manasi karohi; bhāsissāmÄ«ā€ti.

ā€œYes, sir,ā€ Nandiya replied. ā€œEvaṁ, bhanteā€ti kho nandiyo sakko bhagavato paccassosi. The Buddha said this: Bhagavā etadavoca:

ā€œAnd how does a noble disciple live negligently? ā€œKathaƱca, nandiya, ariyasāvako pamādavihārÄ« hoti? Firstly, a noble disciple has experiential confidence in the Buddha … Idha, nandiya, ariyasāvako buddhe aveccappasādena samannāgato hoti—itipi so bhagavā …pe… satthā devamanussānaṁ buddho bhagavāti. They’re content with that confidence, and don’t make a further effort for solitude by day or retreat by night. So tena buddhe aveccappasādena santuį¹­į¹­ho na uttari vāyamati divā pavivekāya, rattiṁ paį¹­isallānāya. When they live negligently, there’s no joy. Tassa evaṁ pamattassa viharato pāmojjaṁ na hoti. When there’s no joy, there’s no rapture. Pāmojje asati, pÄ«ti na hoti. When there’s no rapture, there’s no tranquility. PÄ«tiyā asati, passaddhi na hoti. When there’s no tranquility, there’s suffering. Passaddhiyā asati, dukkhaṁ viharati. When one is suffering, the mind does not become immersed in samādhi. Dukkhino cittaṁ na samādhiyati. When the mind is not immersed in samādhi, principles do not become clear. Asamāhite citte dhammā na pātubhavanti. Because principles have not become clear, they’re reckoned to live negligently. Dhammānaṁ apātubhāvā pamādavihārÄ«tveva saį¹…khyaṁ gacchati.

Furthermore, a noble disciple has experiential confidence in the teaching … Puna caparaṁ, nandiya, ariyasāvako dhamme …pe… the Saį¹…gha … saį¹…ghe …pe… And they have the ethical conduct loved by the noble ones … leading to immersion. ariyakantehi sÄ«lehi samannāgato hoti akhaį¹‡įøehi …pe… samādhisaṁvattanikehi. They’re content with that ethical conduct loved by the noble ones, and don’t make a further effort for solitude by day or retreat by night. So tehi ariyakantehi sÄ«lehi santuį¹­į¹­ho na uttari vāyamati divā pavivekāya rattiṁ paį¹­isallānāya. When they live negligently, there’s no joy. Tassa evaṁ pamattassa viharato pāmojjaṁ na hoti. When there’s no joy, there’s no rapture. Pāmojje asati, pÄ«ti na hoti. When there’s no rapture, there’s no tranquility. PÄ«tiyā asati, passaddhi na hoti. And how does a noble disciple live diligently? KathaƱca, nandiya, ariyasāvako appamādavihārÄ« hoti? Firstly, a noble disciple has experiential confidence in the Buddha … Idha, nandiya, ariyasāvako buddhe aveccappasādena samannāgato hoti—itipi so bhagavā …pe… satthā devamanussānaṁ buddho bhagavāti. But they’re not content with that confidence, and make a further effort for solitude by day and retreat by night. So tena buddhe aveccappasādena asantuį¹­į¹­ho uttari vāyamati divā pavivekāya rattiṁ paį¹­isallānāya. When they live diligently, joy springs up. Tassa evaṁ appamattassa viharato pāmojjaṁ jāyati. Being joyful, rapture springs up. Pamuditassa pÄ«ti jāyati. When the mind is full of rapture, the body becomes tranquil. PÄ«timanassa kāyo passambhati. When the body is tranquil, they feel bliss. Passaddhakāyo sukhaṁ vediyati. And when blissful, the mind becomes immersed in samādhi. Sukhino cittaṁ samādhiyati. When the mind is immersed in samādhi, principles become clear. Samāhite citte dhammā pātubhavanti. Because principles have become clear, they’re reckoned to live diligently. Dhammānaṁ pātubhāvā appamādavihārÄ«tveva saį¹…khyaṁ gacchati.

Tassuddānaṁ

Abhisandā tayo vuttā, duve devapadāni ca; Sabhāgataṁ mahānāmo, vassaṁ kāḷī ca nandiyāti.
