Nandiya the Sakyan Nandiyasakkasutta
At one time the Buddha was staying in the land of the Sakyans, near Kapilavatthu in the Banyan Tree Monastery. Ekaį¹ samayaį¹ bhagavÄ sakkesu viharati kapilavatthusmiį¹ nigrodhÄrÄme. Then Nandiya the Sakyan went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him: Atha kho nandiyo sakko yena bhagavÄ tenupasaį¹ kami; upasaį¹ kamitvÄ bhagavantaį¹ abhivÄdetvÄ ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho nandiyo sakko bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca:
āSir, if a noble disciple were to totally and utterly lack the four factors of stream-entry, would they live negligently?ā āyasseva nu kho, bhante, ariyasÄvakassa cattÄri sotÄpattiyaį¹ gÄni sabbena sabbaį¹ sabbathÄ sabbaį¹ natthi sveva nu kho, bhante, ariyasÄvako pamÄdavihÄrÄ«āti.
āNandiya, someone who totally and utterly lacks these four factors of stream-entry stands outside in the faction of ordinary persons, I say. āāYassa kho, nandiya, cattÄri sotÄpattiyaį¹ gÄni sabbena sabbaį¹ sabbathÄ sabbaį¹ natthi tamahaį¹ bÄhiro puthujjanapakkhe į¹hitoāti vadÄmi. Neverthless, Nandiya, as to how a noble disciple lives negligently and how they live diligently, Api ca, nandiya, yathÄ ariyasÄvako pamÄdavihÄrÄ« ceva hoti, appamÄdavihÄrÄ« ca listen and apply your mind well, I will speak.ā taį¹ suį¹Ähi, sÄdhukaį¹ manasi karohi; bhÄsissÄmÄ«āti.
āYes, sir,ā Nandiya replied. āEvaį¹, bhanteāti kho nandiyo sakko bhagavato paccassosi. The Buddha said this: BhagavÄ etadavoca:
āAnd how does a noble disciple live negligently? āKathaƱca, nandiya, ariyasÄvako pamÄdavihÄrÄ« hoti? Firstly, a noble disciple has experiential confidence in the Buddha ⦠Idha, nandiya, ariyasÄvako buddhe aveccappasÄdena samannÄgato hotiāitipi so bhagavÄ ā¦pe⦠satthÄ devamanussÄnaį¹ buddho bhagavÄti. Theyāre content with that confidence, and donāt make a further effort for solitude by day or retreat by night. So tena buddhe aveccappasÄdena santuį¹į¹ho na uttari vÄyamati divÄ pavivekÄya, rattiį¹ paį¹isallÄnÄya. When they live negligently, thereās no joy. Tassa evaį¹ pamattassa viharato pÄmojjaį¹ na hoti. When thereās no joy, thereās no rapture. PÄmojje asati, pÄ«ti na hoti. When thereās no rapture, thereās no tranquility. PÄ«tiyÄ asati, passaddhi na hoti. When thereās no tranquility, thereās suffering. PassaddhiyÄ asati, dukkhaį¹ viharati. When one is suffering, the mind does not become immersed in samÄdhi. Dukkhino cittaį¹ na samÄdhiyati. When the mind is not immersed in samÄdhi, principles do not become clear. AsamÄhite citte dhammÄ na pÄtubhavanti. Because principles have not become clear, theyāre reckoned to live negligently. DhammÄnaį¹ apÄtubhÄvÄ pamÄdavihÄrÄ«tveva saį¹ khyaį¹ gacchati.
Furthermore, a noble disciple has experiential confidence in the teaching ⦠Puna caparaį¹, nandiya, ariyasÄvako dhamme ā¦pe⦠the Saį¹ gha ⦠saį¹ ghe ā¦pe⦠And they have the ethical conduct loved by the noble ones ⦠leading to immersion. ariyakantehi sÄ«lehi samannÄgato hoti akhaį¹įøehi ā¦pe⦠samÄdhisaį¹vattanikehi. Theyāre content with that ethical conduct loved by the noble ones, and donāt make a further effort for solitude by day or retreat by night. So tehi ariyakantehi sÄ«lehi santuį¹į¹ho na uttari vÄyamati divÄ pavivekÄya rattiį¹ paį¹isallÄnÄya. When they live negligently, thereās no joy. Tassa evaį¹ pamattassa viharato pÄmojjaį¹ na hoti. When thereās no joy, thereās no rapture. PÄmojje asati, pÄ«ti na hoti. When thereās no rapture, thereās no tranquility. PÄ«tiyÄ asati, passaddhi na hoti. And how does a noble disciple live diligently? KathaƱca, nandiya, ariyasÄvako appamÄdavihÄrÄ« hoti? Firstly, a noble disciple has experiential confidence in the Buddha ⦠Idha, nandiya, ariyasÄvako buddhe aveccappasÄdena samannÄgato hotiāitipi so bhagavÄ ā¦pe⦠satthÄ devamanussÄnaį¹ buddho bhagavÄti. But theyāre not content with that confidence, and make a further effort for solitude by day and retreat by night. So tena buddhe aveccappasÄdena asantuį¹į¹ho uttari vÄyamati divÄ pavivekÄya rattiį¹ paį¹isallÄnÄya. When they live diligently, joy springs up. Tassa evaį¹ appamattassa viharato pÄmojjaį¹ jÄyati. Being joyful, rapture springs up. Pamuditassa pÄ«ti jÄyati. When the mind is full of rapture, the body becomes tranquil. PÄ«timanassa kÄyo passambhati. When the body is tranquil, they feel bliss. PassaddhakÄyo sukhaį¹ vediyati. And when blissful, the mind becomes immersed in samÄdhi. Sukhino cittaį¹ samÄdhiyati. When the mind is immersed in samÄdhi, principles become clear.
