Then the mendicant KokÄlika went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him, Atha kho kokÄliko bhikkhu yena bhagavÄ tenupasaį¹ kami; upasaį¹ kamitvÄ bhagavantaį¹ abhivÄdetvÄ ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho kokÄliko bhikkhu bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: āSir, SÄriputta and MoggallÄna have corrupt wishes. Theyāve fallen under the sway of corrupt wishes.ā āpÄpicchÄ, bhante, sÄriputtamoggallÄnÄ pÄpikÄnaį¹ icchÄnaį¹ vasaį¹ gatÄāti.
When this was said, the Buddha said to KokÄlika, Evaį¹ vutte, bhagavÄ kokÄlikaį¹ bhikkhuį¹ etadavoca: āDonāt say that, KokÄlika! Donāt say that, KokÄlika! āmÄ hevaį¹, kokÄlika, avaca; mÄ hevaį¹, kokÄlika, avaca. Have confidence in SÄriputta and MoggallÄna, theyāre good monks.ā PasÄdehi, kokÄlika, sÄriputtamoggallÄnesu cittaį¹. PesalÄ sÄriputtamoggallÄnÄāti.
For a second time KokÄlika said to the Buddha, Dutiyampi kho kokÄliko bhikkhu bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: āDespite my faith and trust in the Buddha, SÄriputta and MoggallÄna have corrupt wishes. Theyāve fallen under the sway of corrupt wishes.ā ākiƱcÄpi me, bhante, bhagavÄ saddhÄyiko paccayiko; atha kho pÄpicchÄva bhante, sÄriputtamoggallÄnÄ pÄpikÄnaį¹ icchÄnaį¹ vasaį¹ gatÄāti.
For a second time, the Buddha said to KokÄlika, Dutiyampi kho bhagavÄ kokÄlikaį¹ bhikkhuį¹ etadavoca: āDonāt say that, KokÄlika! Then KokÄlika rose from his seat, bowed, and respectfully circled the Buddha, keeping him on his right, before leaving. Atha kho kokÄliko bhikkhu uį¹į¹hÄyÄsanÄ bhagavantaį¹ abhivÄdetvÄ padakkhiį¹aį¹ katvÄ pakkÄmi. Not long after he left his body erupted with boils the size of mustard seeds. Acirapakkantassa ca kokÄlikassa bhikkhuno sÄsapamattÄ«hi pīḷakÄhi sabbo kÄyo phuį¹o ahosi. The boils grew to the size of mung beans, then chickpeas, then jujube seeds, then jujubes, then myrobalans, then unripe wood-apples, then ripe wood-apples. Finally they burst open, and pus and blood oozed out. He was reborn in the Pink Lotus hell because of his resentment for SÄriputta and MoggallÄna. KÄlaį¹ kato ca kokÄliko bhikkhu padumaį¹ nirayaį¹ upapajji sÄriputtamoggallÄnesu cittaį¹ ÄghÄtetvÄ.
Then, late at night, the glorious divinity Sahampati, lighting up the entire Jetaās Grove, went up to the Buddha, bowed, stood to one side, and said to him, Atha kho brahmÄ sahampati abhikkantÄya rattiyÄ abhikkantavaį¹į¹o kevalakappaį¹ jetavanaį¹ obhÄsetvÄ yena bhagavÄ tenupasaį¹ kami; upasaį¹ kamitvÄ bhagavantaį¹ abhivÄdetvÄ ekamantaį¹ aį¹į¹hÄsi. Ekamantaį¹ į¹hito kho brahmÄ sahampati bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: āSir, the mendicant KokÄlika has passed away. ākokÄliko, bhante, bhikkhu kÄlaį¹ kato. He was reborn in the Pink Lotus hell because of his resentment for SÄriputta and MoggallÄna.ā KÄlaį¹ kato ca, bhante, kokÄliko bhikkhu padumaį¹ nirayaį¹ upapanno sÄriputtamoggallÄnesu cittaį¹ ÄghÄtetvÄāti.
Thatās what the divinity Sahampati said. Idamavoca brahmÄ sahampati. Then he bowed and respectfully circled the Buddha, keeping him on his right side, before vanishing right there. Idaį¹ vatvÄ bhagavantaį¹ abhivÄdetvÄ padakkhiį¹aį¹ katvÄ tatthevantaradhÄyÄ«ti.
Then, when the night had passed, the Buddha told the mendicants all that had happened. Atha kho bhagavÄ tassÄ rattiyÄ accayena bhikkhÅ« Ämantesi: āimaį¹, bhikkhave, rattiį¹ brahmÄ sahampati abhikkantÄya rattiyÄ abhikkantavaį¹į¹o kevalakappaį¹ jetavanaį¹ obhÄsetvÄ yenÄhaį¹ tenupasaį¹ kami; upasaį¹ kamitvÄ maį¹ abhivÄdetvÄ ekamantaį¹ aį¹į¹hÄsi. Ekamantaį¹ į¹hito kho, bhikkhave, brahmÄ sahampati maį¹ etadavoca: ākokÄliko, bhante, bhikkhu kÄlaį¹ kato. KÄlaį¹ kato ca, bhante, kokÄliko bhikkhu padumaį¹ nirayaį¹ upapanno sÄriputtamoggallÄnesu cittaį¹ ÄghÄtetvÄāti.
Idamavoca, bhikkhave, brahmÄ sahampati, idaį¹ vatvÄ maį¹ abhivÄdetvÄ padakkhiį¹aį¹ katvÄ tatthevantaradhÄyÄ«āti.
When he said this, one of the mendicants asked the Buddha, Evaį¹ vutte, aƱƱataro bhikkhu bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: āSir, how long is the lifespan in the Pink Lotus hell?ā ākÄ«vadÄ«ghaį¹ nu kho, bhante, padume niraye ÄyuppamÄį¹anāti?
āItās long, mendicant. āDÄ«ghaį¹ kho, bhikkhu, padume niraye ÄyuppamÄį¹aį¹. Itās not easy to calculate Taį¹ na sukaraį¹ saį¹ khÄtuį¹: how many years, how many hundreds or thousands or hundreds of thousands of years it lasts.ā āettakÄni vassÄni iti vÄ, ettakÄni vassasatÄni iti vÄ, ettakÄni vassasahassÄni iti vÄ, ettakÄni vassasatasahassÄni iti vÄāāti.
āBut sir, is it possible to give a simile?ā āSakkÄ pana, bhante, upamaį¹ kÄtunāti?
āItās possible,ā said the Buddha. āSakkÄ, bhikkhÅ«āti bhagavÄ avoca:
āSuppose there was a Kosalan load of twenty packs of sesame seed. And at the end of every hundred years someone would remove a single seed from it. āSeyyathÄpi, bhikkhu vÄ«satikhÄriko kosalako tilavÄho. Twenty lifetimes in the Ababa hell equal one lifetime in the Aį¹aį¹a hell. SeyyathÄpi, bhikkhu, vÄ«sati ababÄ nirayÄ, evameko aį¹aį¹o nirayo. Twenty lifetimes in the Aį¹aį¹a hell equal one lifetime in the Ahaha hell. SeyyathÄpi, bhikkhu, vÄ«sati aį¹aį¹Ä nirayÄ, evameko ahaho nirayo. Twenty lifetimes in the Ahaha hell equal one lifetime in the Yellow Lotus hell. SeyyathÄpi, bhikkhu, vÄ«sati ahahÄ nirayÄ, evameko kumudo nirayo. Twenty lifetimes in the Yellow Lotus hell equal one lifetime in the Fragrant Water Lily hell. SeyyathÄpi, bhikkhu, vÄ«sati kumudÄ nirayÄ, evameko sogandhiko nirayo. Twenty lifetimes in the Fragrant Water Lily hell equal one lifetime in the Blue Water Lily hell. SeyyathÄpi, bhikkhu, vÄ«sati sogandhikÄ nirayÄ, evameko uppalanirayo. Twenty lifetimes in the Blue Water Lily hell equal one lifetime in the White Lotus hell. SeyyathÄpi, bhikkhu, vÄ«sati uppalÄ nirayÄ, evameko puį¹įøariko nirayo. Twenty lifetimes in the White Lotus hell equal one lifetime in the Pink Lotus hell. SeyyathÄpi, bhikkhu, vÄ«sati puį¹įøarikÄ nirayÄ, evameko padumo nirayo.
The mendicant KokÄlika has been reborn in the Pink Lotus hell because of his resentment for SÄriputta and MoggallÄna.ā Padume pana, bhikkhu, niraye kokÄliko bhikkhu upapanno sÄriputtamoggallÄnesu cittaį¹ ÄghÄtetvÄāti.
That is what the Buddha said. Idamavoca bhagavÄ. Then the Holy One, the Teacher, went on to say: Idaį¹ vatvÄna sugato athÄparaį¹ etadavoca satthÄ:
āA man is born āPurisassa hi jÄtassa, with an axe in his mouth. kuį¹hÄrÄ« jÄyate mukhe; A fool cuts themselves with it YÄya chindati attÄnaį¹, when they say bad words. bÄlo dubbhÄsitaį¹ bhaį¹aį¹.
When you praise someone worthy of criticism, Yo nindiyaį¹ pasaį¹sati, or criticize someone worthy of praise, Taį¹ vÄ nindati yo pasaį¹siyo; you choose a losing hand with your own mouth: VicinÄti mukhena so kaliį¹, youāll never find happiness that way. KalinÄ tena sukhaį¹ na vindati.
A losing hand at dice is a trivial thing, Appamattako ayaį¹ kali, if all you lose is your money Yo akkhesu dhanaparÄjayo; and all you own, even yourself. SabbassÄpi sahÄpi attanÄ, Whatās a really terrible hand Ayameva mahantaro kali; is to hate the holy ones. Yo sugatesu manaį¹ padosaye.
For a hundred thousand times a hundred million, Sataį¹ sahassÄnaį¹ nirabbudÄnaį¹, times five hundred and thirty-six times
a thousand times ten million years
Chattiį¹sati paƱca ca abbudÄni; a slanderer of noble ones goes to hell, YamariyagarahÄ« nirayaį¹ upeti, having aimed bad words and thoughts at them.ā VÄcaį¹ manaƱca paį¹idhÄya pÄpakanāti.
