With Anuruddha Anuruddhasutta
At one time Venerable Anuruddha was staying in the land of the Kosalans in a certain forest grove. Ekaį¹ samayaį¹ ÄyasmÄ anuruddho kosalesu viharati aƱƱatarasmiį¹ vanasaį¹įøe.
Then a certain deity of the company of the thirty-three named Penelope had been Anuruddhaās partner in a former life. She went up to Anuruddha, and recited these verses: Atha kho aƱƱatarÄ tÄvatiį¹sakÄyikÄ devatÄ jÄlinÄ« nÄma Äyasmato anuruddhassa purÄį¹adutiyikÄ yenÄyasmÄ anuruddho tenupasaį¹ kami; upasaį¹ kamitvÄ Äyasmantaį¹ anuruddhaį¹ gÄthÄya ajjhabhÄsi:
āSet your heart there, āTattha cittaį¹ paį¹idhehi, where you used to live: yattha te vusitaį¹ pure; among the gods of the thirty-three, TÄvatiį¹sesu devesu, whose every desire is granted! sabbakÄmasamiddhisu; At the fore of a retinue Purakkhato parivuto, of divine maidens, youāll shine!ā devakaƱƱÄhi sobhasÄ«āti.
āDivine maidens are in a sorry state, āDuggatÄ devakaƱƱÄyo, stuck in substantial reality. sakkÄyasmiį¹ patiį¹į¹hitÄ; And those beings too are in a sorry state, Te cÄpi duggatÄ sattÄ, who are attached to divine maidens.ā devakaƱƱÄhi patthitÄāti.
āThey donāt know pleasure āNa te sukhaį¹ pajÄnanti, who donāt see the Garden of Delight! ye na passanti nandanaį¹; Itās the abode of lordly gods, ÄvÄsaį¹ naradevÄnaį¹, the glorious host of Thirty!ā tidasÄnaį¹ yasassinanāti.
āFool, donāt you understand āNa tvaį¹ bÄle vijÄnÄsi, the saying of the perfected ones: yathÄ arahataį¹ vaco; all conditions are impermanent, AniccÄ sabbasaį¹ khÄrÄ, their nature is to rise and fall; uppÄdavayadhammino; having arisen, they cease; UppajjitvÄ nirujjhanti, their settling is such bliss. tesaį¹ vÅ«pasamo sukho.
O Penelope, weaver of the webāNatthi dÄni punÄvÄso, there are no more abodes for me in the host of gods. devakÄyasmi jÄlini; Transmigration through births is finished, VikkhÄ«į¹o jÄtisaį¹sÄro, now thereāll be no more future lives.ā natthi dÄni punabbhavoāti.
