With Anuruddha Anuruddhasutta

At one time Venerable Anuruddha was staying in the land of the Kosalans in a certain forest grove. Ekaṁ samayaṁ āyasmā anuruddho kosalesu viharati aƱƱatarasmiṁ vanasaį¹‡įøe.

Then a certain deity of the company of the thirty-three named Penelope had been Anuruddha’s partner in a former life. She went up to Anuruddha, and recited these verses: Atha kho aƱƱatarā tāvatiṁsakāyikā devatā jālinÄ« nāma āyasmato anuruddhassa purāṇadutiyikā yenāyasmā anuruddho tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā āyasmantaṁ anuruddhaṁ gāthāya ajjhabhāsi:

ā€œSet your heart there, ā€œTattha cittaṁ paṇidhehi, where you used to live: yattha te vusitaṁ pure; among the gods of the thirty-three, Tāvatiṁsesu devesu, whose every desire is granted! sabbakāmasamiddhisu; At the fore of a retinue Purakkhato parivuto, of divine maidens, you’ll shine!ā€ devakaƱƱāhi sobhasÄ«ā€ti.

ā€œDivine maidens are in a sorry state, ā€œDuggatā devakaƱƱāyo, stuck in substantial reality. sakkāyasmiṁ patiį¹į¹hitā; And those beings too are in a sorry state, Te cāpi duggatā sattā, who are attached to divine maidens.ā€ devakaƱƱāhi patthitāā€ti.

ā€œThey don’t know pleasure ā€œNa te sukhaṁ pajānanti, who don’t see the Garden of Delight! ye na passanti nandanaṁ; It’s the abode of lordly gods, Āvāsaṁ naradevānaṁ, the glorious host of Thirty!ā€ tidasānaṁ yasassinanā€ti.

ā€œFool, don’t you understand ā€œNa tvaṁ bāle vijānāsi, the saying of the perfected ones: yathā arahataṁ vaco; all conditions are impermanent, Aniccā sabbasaį¹…khārā, their nature is to rise and fall; uppādavayadhammino; having arisen, they cease; Uppajjitvā nirujjhanti, their settling is such bliss. tesaṁ vÅ«pasamo sukho.

O Penelope, weaver of the web—Natthi dāni punāvāso, there are no more abodes for me in the host of gods. devakāyasmi jālini; Transmigration through births is finished, Vikkhīṇo jātisaṁsāro, now there’ll be no more future lives.ā€ natthi dāni punabbhavoā€ti.
