With Upasena Upasenasutta
So I have heard. Evaį¹ me sutaį¹āAt one time the Buddha was staying near RÄjagaha, in the Bamboo Grove, the squirrelsā feeding ground. ekaį¹ samayaį¹ bhagavÄ rÄjagahe viharati veįø·uvane kalandakanivÄpe. Then as Venerable Upasena son of Vaį¹ gantÄ was in private retreat this thought came to his mind: Atha kho Äyasmato upasenassa vaį¹ gantaputtassa rahogatassa paį¹isallÄ«nassa evaį¹ cetaso parivitakko udapÄdi: āIām so fortunate, so very fortunate! ālÄbhÄ vata me, suladdhaį¹ vata me, My Teacher is the Blessed One, perfected, a fully awakened Buddha. satthÄ ca me bhagavÄ arahaį¹ sammÄsambuddho; Well explained is the teaching and training in which I have gone forth from the lay life to homelessness. svÄkkhÄte camhi dhammavinaye agÄrasmÄ anagÄriyaį¹ pabbajito; My spiritual companions are ethical and of good character. sabrahmacÄrino ca me sÄ«lavanto kalyÄį¹adhammÄ; I have fulfilled the precepts. sÄ«lesu camhi paripÅ«rakÄrÄ«; My mind is unified and serene. susamÄhito camhi ekaggacitto; I am a perfected one who has ended the defilements. arahÄ camhi khÄ«į¹Äsavo; I am of great might and power. mahiddhiko camhi mahÄnubhÄvo. My life has been good, and my death will be good.ā Bhaddakaį¹ me jÄ«vitaį¹, bhaddakaį¹ maraį¹anāti.
Then, knowing that Venerable Upasenaās train of thought, on that occasion the Buddha expressed this heartfelt sentiment: Atha kho bhagavÄ Äyasmato upasenassa vaį¹ gantaputtassa cetasÄ cetoparivitakkamaƱƱÄya tÄyaį¹ velÄyaį¹ imaį¹ udÄnaį¹ udÄnesi:
āOne who has no guilt in life, āYaį¹ jÄ«vitaį¹ na tapati, nor grief at facing death: maraį¹ante na socati; that attentive one who has seen the truth, Sa ve diį¹į¹hapado dhÄ«ro, grieves not among the grieving. sokamajjhe na socati.
For the mendicant with peaceful mind, Ucchinnabhavataį¹hassa, who has cut off craving for continued existence, santacittassa bhikkhuno; transmigration through births is finished, VikkhÄ«į¹o jÄtisaį¹sÄro, thereāll be no more future lives for them.ā natthi tassa punabbhavoāti.
