Overestimation AdhimÄnasutta
At one time Venerable MahÄkassapa was staying near RÄjagaha, in the Bamboo Grove, the squirrelsā feeding ground. Ekaį¹ samayaį¹ ÄyasmÄ mahÄkassapo rÄjagahe viharati veįø·uvane kalandakanivÄpe. There he addressed the mendicants: Tatra kho ÄyasmÄ mahÄkassapo bhikkhÅ« Ämantesi: āReverends, mendicants!ā āÄvuso bhikkhaveāti.
āReverend,ā they replied. āÄvusoāti kho te bhikkhÅ« Äyasmato mahÄkassapassa paccassosuį¹. Venerable MahÄkassapa said this: ÄyasmÄ mahÄkassapo etadavoca:
āTake a mendicant who declares enlightenment: āIdhÄvuso, bhikkhu aƱƱaį¹ byÄkaroti: āI understand: āRebirth is ended, the spiritual journey has been completed, what had to be done has been done, there is nothing further for this place.āā ākhÄ«į¹Ä jÄti, vusitaį¹ brahmacariyaį¹, kataį¹ karaį¹Ä«yaį¹, nÄparaį¹ itthattÄyÄti pajÄnÄmÄ«āti. Theyāre pursued, pressed, and grilled by the Realized One, or by one of his disciples who has the absorptions, and is skilled in attainments, in the minds of others, and in encompassing anotherās mind. Tamenaį¹ tathÄgato vÄ tathÄgatasÄvako vÄ jhÄyÄ« samÄpattikusalo paracittakusalo paracittapariyÄyakusalo samanuyuƱjati samanuggÄhati samanubhÄsati. Grilled in this way they get stuck or lose their way. They fall to ruin and disaster. So tathÄgatena vÄ tathÄgatasÄvakena vÄ jhÄyinÄ samÄpattikusalena paracittakusalena paracittapariyÄyakusalena samanuyuƱjiyamÄno samanuggÄhiyamÄno samanubhÄsiyamÄno irÄ«į¹aį¹ Äpajjati vicinaį¹ Äpajjati anayaį¹ Äpajjati byasanaį¹ Äpajjati anayabyasanaį¹ Äpajjati.
The Realized One or one of his disciples encompasses their mind and investigates: Tamenaį¹ tathÄgato vÄ tathÄgatasÄvako vÄ jhÄyÄ« samÄpattikusalo paracittakusalo paracittapariyÄyakusalo evaį¹ cetasÄ ceto paricca manasi karoti: āWhy does this venerable declare enlightenment, saying, ākiį¹ nu kho ayamÄyasmÄ aƱƱaį¹ byÄkarotiāāI understand: āRebirth is ended, the spiritual journey has been completed, what had to be done has been done, there is nothing further for this place.ā?āā khÄ«į¹Ä jÄti, vusitaį¹ brahmacariyaį¹, kataį¹ karaį¹Ä«yaį¹, nÄparaį¹ itthattÄyÄti pajÄnÄmÄ«āti.
They understand, Tamenaį¹ tathÄgato vÄ tathÄgatasÄvako vÄ jhÄyÄ« samÄpattikusalo paracittakusalo paracittapariyÄyakusalo evaį¹ cetasÄ ceto paricca pajÄnÄti: āThis venerable overestimates themselves and takes that to be the truth. They perceive that theyāve attained what they havenāt attained, done what they havenāt done, and achieved what they havenāt achieved. āAdhimÄniko kho ayamÄyasmÄ adhimÄnasacco, appatte pattasaƱƱī, akate katasaƱƱī, anadhigate adhigatasaƱƱī. And they declare enlightenment out of overestimation: AdhimÄnena aƱƱaį¹ byÄkarotiā
āI understand: āRebirth is ended, the spiritual journey has been completed, what had to be done has been done, there is nothing further for this place.āāā khÄ«į¹Ä jÄti, vusitaį¹ brahmacariyaį¹, kataį¹ karaį¹Ä«yaį¹, nÄparaį¹ itthattÄyÄti pajÄnÄmÄ«āti.

They understand, Tamenaį¹ tathÄgato vÄ tathÄgatasÄvako vÄ jhÄyÄ« samÄpattikusalo paracittakusalo paracittapariyÄyakusalo evaį¹ cetasÄ ceto paricca pajÄnÄti: āThis venerable is very learned, remembering and keeping what theyāve learned. These teachings are good in the beginning, good in the middle, and good in the end, meaningful and well-phrased, describing a spiritual practice thatās entirely full and pure. They are very learned in such teachings, remembering them, rehearsing them, mentally scrutinizing them, and penetrating them theoretically. āBahussuto kho pana ayamÄyasmÄ sutadharo sutasannicayo, ye te dhammÄ ÄdikalyÄį¹Ä majjhekalyÄį¹Ä pariyosÄnakalyÄį¹Ä sÄtthaį¹ sabyaƱjanaį¹ kevalaparipuį¹į¹aį¹ parisuddhaį¹ brahmacariyaį¹ abhivadanti, tathÄrÅ«pÄssa dhammÄ bahussutÄ honti dhÄtÄ vacasÄ paricitÄ manasÄnupekkhitÄ diį¹į¹hiyÄ suppaį¹ividdhÄ. Therefore this venerable overestimates themselves and takes that to be the truth. ā¦ā TasmÄ ayamÄyasmÄ adhimÄniko adhimÄnasacco, appatte pattasaƱƱī, akate katasaƱƱī, anadhigate adhigatasaƱƱī. AdhimÄnena aƱƱaį¹ byÄkarotiākhÄ«į¹Ä jÄti, vusitaį¹ brahmacariyaį¹, kataį¹ karaį¹Ä«yaį¹, nÄparaį¹ itthattÄyÄti pajÄnÄmÄ«āti.
They understand, Tamenaį¹ tathÄgato vÄ tathÄgatasÄvako vÄ jhÄyÄ« samÄpattikusalo paracittakusalo paracittapariyÄyakusalo evaį¹ cetasÄ ceto paricca pajÄnÄti: āThis venerable is covetous, āAbhijjhÄlu kho pana ayamÄyasmÄ; and often lives with a heart full covetousness. abhijjhÄpariyuį¹į¹hitena cetasÄ bahulaį¹ viharati. Being full of covetousness means decline in the teaching and training proclaimed by the Realized One. AbhijjhÄpariyuį¹į¹hÄnaį¹ kho pana tathÄgatappavedite dhammavinaye parihÄnametaį¹.
This venerable has ill will ⦠ByÄpanno kho pana ayamÄyasmÄ; byÄpÄdapariyuį¹į¹hitena cetasÄ bahulaį¹ viharati. ByÄpÄdapariyuį¹į¹hÄnaį¹ kho pana tathÄgatappavedite dhammavinaye parihÄnametaį¹.
dullness and drowsiness ⦠Thinamiddho kho pana ayamÄyasmÄ; thinamiddhapariyuį¹į¹hitena cetasÄ bahulaį¹ viharati. Thinamiddhapariyuį¹į¹hÄnaį¹ kho pana tathÄgatappavedite dhammavinaye parihÄnametaį¹.
restlessness ⦠Uddhato kho pana ayamÄyasmÄ; uddhaccapariyuį¹į¹hitena cetasÄ bahulaį¹ viharati. Uddhaccapariyuį¹į¹hÄnaį¹ kho pana tathÄgatappavedite dhammavinaye parihÄnametaį¹.
doubt ⦠Vicikiccho kho pana ayamÄyasmÄ; vicikicchÄpariyuį¹į¹hitena cetasÄ bahulaį¹ viharati. VicikicchÄpariyuį¹į¹hÄnaį¹ kho pana tathÄgatappavedite dhammavinaye parihÄnametaį¹.
This venerable relishes work. They love it and like to relish it ⦠KammÄrÄmo kho pana ayamÄyasmÄ kammarato kammÄrÄmataį¹ anuyutto. KammÄrÄmatÄ kho pana tathÄgatappavedite dhammavinaye parihÄnametaį¹.
This venerable relishes talk ⦠BhassÄrÄmo kho pana ayamÄyasmÄ bhassarato bhassÄrÄmataį¹ anuyutto. BhassÄrÄmatÄ kho pana tathÄgatappavedite dhammavinaye parihÄnametaį¹.
sleep ⦠NiddÄrÄmo kho pana ayamÄyasmÄ niddÄrato niddÄrÄmataį¹ anuyutto. NiddÄrÄmatÄ kho pana tathÄgatappavedite dhammavinaye parihÄnametaį¹.
company ⦠Saį¹ gaį¹ikÄrÄmo kho pana ayamÄyasmÄ saį¹ gaį¹ikarato saį¹ gaį¹ikÄrÄmataį¹ anuyutto. Saį¹ gaį¹ikÄrÄmatÄ kho pana tathÄgatappavedite dhammavinaye parihÄnametaį¹.
When there is still more to be done, this venerable stopped half-way after achieving some trifling distinction. Sati kho pana ayamÄyasmÄ uttari karaį¹Ä«ye oramattakena visesÄdhigamena antarÄ vosÄnaį¹ Äpanno. Stopping half-way means decline in the teaching and training proclaimed by the Realized One.ā AntarÄ vosÄnagamanaį¹ kho pana tathÄgatappavedite dhammavinaye parihÄnametaį¹ā.
It is quite impossible for a mendicant to achieve growth, improvement, or maturity in this teaching and training without giving up these ten qualities. So vatÄvuso, bhikkhu āime dasa dhamme appahÄya imasmiį¹ dhammavinaye vuddhiį¹ virūḷhiį¹ vepullaį¹ ÄpajjissatÄ«āti netaį¹ į¹hÄnaį¹ vijjati. It is quite possible for a mendicant to achieve growth, improvement, or maturity in this teaching and training after giving up these ten qualities.ā So vatÄvuso, bhikkhu āime dasa dhamme pahÄya imasmiį¹ dhammavinaye vuddhiį¹ virūḷhiį¹ vepullaį¹ ÄpajjissatÄ«āti į¹hÄnametaį¹ vijjatÄ«āti.
