Verbal Conduct Duccaritasutta

“Mendicants, there are these four kinds of bad conduct by way of speech. “Cattārimāni, bhikkhave, vacīduccaritāni. What four? Katamāni cattāri? Speech that’s false, backbiting, harsh, or nonsensical. Musāvādo, pisuṇā vācā, pharusā vācā, samphappalāpo—These are the four kinds of bad conduct by way of speech. Imāni kho, bhikkhave, cattāri vacīduccaritāni.

There are these four kinds of good conduct by way of speech. Cattārimāni, bhikkhave, vacīsucaritāni. What four? Katamāni cattāri? Speech that’s true, harmonious, gentle, and thoughtful. Saccavācā, apisuṇā vācā, saṇhā vācā, mantavācā—These are the four kinds of good conduct by way of speech.” Imāni kho, bhikkhave, cattāri vacīsucaritānī”ti.
